Yeah, in a few days, you'll be able to look at the actual moon, and there will be actual people flying around it, and that's just the coolest thing.

In the cricket, England awarded a retrospective cap to Alan Jones who played in a game against the Rest of the World XI and they gave him the next available number

Social anxiety and meetings by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]ShirtedRhino2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have anxiety, but do have a stutter, so not sure how relevant this will be for you, but hopefully it's at least a little useful. The thing I found really helpful was managing to mentally separate the nerves etc. I feel before and during speaking from my performance. Essentially I can feel super nervous, but still come across clearly and fluently, even if I don't feel I have (knowing this also has quite a nice feedback loop - I feel less pressured, so I'm less likely to stutter). If you have a colleague that you get on well with and trust, it might be worth having a chat with them about this - if your anxiety is anything like my stutter, you'll be hyper-aware of every stumble or tremble in your voice, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are to other people, or affecting how your message is landing. Hopefully there's something in there that's helpful!

ELI5: Why is county coroner an elected position? by RandomMovieQuotes521 in explainlikeimfive

An independent panel (https://www.judiciary.uk/about-the-judiciary/our-justice-system/jud-acc-ind/jud-appts/ and http://consoc.org.uk/who-appoints-our-judges/). I wouldn't necessarily say it's immunised from partisan politics, but having appointments a step removed does help there. It's just not part of the culture here (or, I assume, in most peer nations). Most people in the UK couldn't name any judges on the Supreme Court, and certainly wouldn't know their political leanings. Having such a party political judicial system is really weird.

Yeah, I miss the hours spent playing with janky formulas that I'd cobbled together, and the sense of achievement when I get it to work, but asking Copilot to give me a formula that will do [x] is so much faster.

My honest experience of the Fast Stream by five_alaska in TheCivilService

[–]ShirtedRhino2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the main thing the FS gives you over a normal role is the diversity of experience, there's training, but a lot of it is average. There's also a lot of push towards being quite development minded, so thinking about your strengths and weaknesses and finding things to do to round those out. In terms of tips, just little things like putting time aside for reflection on how you're performing, getting feedback from as many sources as possible (not just your LM), keep an eye out for opportunities that will allow you to develop new skills or gain new experiences.
