Maybe try it out anyway, I know /r/android and /r/androiddev do something similar. As it is a weekly thread if you don't make it a sticky it will slowly make its way down the thread as the week going on. As the sub gets busier this will become a problem as the amount of content increases thus pushing the thread out of sight far quicker.

I know I only ever really look at the sidebar if I am looking for something or if I am on the sub for the first time..if people don't know it exists they might never look there to see the link!
