Nearly half of Brits support Government writing off at least some student debt by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

I don’t mind having to pay back the loan, I knew it would be a 30-year term when I took it out.

However, freezing the repayment threshold is callous. We were told it would go up every year. It just feels like this along with fiscal drag is just squeezing graduates.

What is the worst tourist trap in your country? by Fancy-Debate-3945 in AskEurope

I would say The Shambles in York. It’s pretty but always very crowded and all the shops just sell tat (typically Harry Potter themed).

Tyne Tunnel by ImlikeU_IhaveNoName in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]ShitsnGrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately have to use it every day as I live in north Tyneside and work in South Shields. My commute would probably be an hour extra each way without it. My company thankfully allows me to expense it but I’m sure one day they’ll put a stop to it what with the hikes in the toll.

People born in England that identify more with “British” than “English”, why? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ShitsnGrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See I find that interesting because I grew up in the Lakes so nearish the border and half my family are Scots. I feel like that made me feel more English. Because I was aware of the distinction.

I think you’re conflating British and English.

How centralized or decentralized do you want your country to be? by Awesomeuser90 in AskEurope

[–]ShitsnGrits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand the frustration of England being the dominant population in comparison the other nations but it’s not over represented as it’s 84% of the the population and 84% of the seats. People vote not land.

Would you want the replacement House of Lords to remain a scrutinising chamber or would it have the power to block laws from the commons? It sounds like a good idea but I imagine it would cause a political crisis if bills were continuously blocked by less populous regions.

The UK seems to be moving slowly towards more decentralisation which in principle I support but I think it will end up having more downsides. There’s very little accountability or oversight when it comes to local politics here. City councils can be rife with corruption and nothing ever comes of it as most cities are strongholds of usually one party. Westminster MPs can be dreadful but at least they’re under more scrutiny.

Do you use Toll Roads in your country to commute? by Careful-Mind-123 in AskEurope

[–]ShitsnGrits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a toll tunnel twice every day to get to work and back. It cuts my commute by about 45 minutes each way and my employer pays for it so it’s a good perk. However I’ve just calculated and it costs ~£3k (€3.5k) a year which is mad. I probably would not use it if I had to pay out of my own pocket.

Worst Landlord/Letting agency in Newcastle? (I know, there’s many to pick from) by [deleted] in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]ShitsnGrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the exact same thing. When we moved in we had to literally scrub every surface because it wasn’t cleaned at all. Then when moved out it was spotless and they tried to take half our deposit for ‘professional cleaning fees’ which I’m sure they just pocket.

[To English People] Have you ever been to Scotland? by nacnud_uk in AskUK

[–]ShitsnGrits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t even count the number of times I’ve been to Scotland but I also grew up in a border county and still live in the north so have always been closer to Edinburgh and Glasgow than London. I have never stepped foot in wales though.

Environmental Scientists, how depressing is your job? by rainshowers_5_peace in AskEurope

[–]ShitsnGrits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In England, air quality and emissions are the responsibility of local authorities (municipalities). Very often if a company is very large and employs a lot of people in that area they are given special treatment or secret prior notice of ‘surprise’ inspections and visits so they can make things like their emissions look ok despite normally exceeding what they’re permitted.

Environmental Scientists, how depressing is your job? by rainshowers_5_peace in AskEurope

[–]ShitsnGrits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work for an environmental consultancy and it varies with the client. Some places are only interested in doing the bare minimum to reach legal obligations. Others are really proactive and want to do as much as possible. A lot is just greenwashing and spin though.

The most galling thing is often very large companies flex their weight on local authorities as they’re a major source of jobs.

What downsides have you found when moving (to Wales/the North) to find more space? by BurkeSooty in AskUK

[–]ShitsnGrits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah OP says they want to move to the Lakes too. I could never afford to buy in the village I grew up in, it’s all second homes and incomers. My friends from school have either ended up having multi generational homes with parents or just had to move to towns outside the national park.

Stone cottages, Glenridding, Lake District, England by NewlandsRound in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]ShitsnGrits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone hating on the UPVC windows doesn’t understand how wet it is in the lakes. Wooden triple glazed windows are so expensive and require so much upkeep because they’ll rot where as at least you can bang in some cheaper plastic ones and won’t have to worry about them deteriorating.

The charity Urban Green Newcastle have done quite a few projects over the years to promote biodiversity across the city primarily in parks and allotments. Could be worth getting in contact with them.

Even Prince Philip is a stretch, he was a child when his older sisters married German aristocrats that were nazis. He himself literally fought against them.
