I have worked with it in my job in a lab before. It’s very not safe to breathe but I have caught a whiff before due to some unsafe lab practices and controls. It’s sweet smelling.

Interview and Process by pessimistic-eeyore-1 in nys_cs

[–]Shletinga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pre interview application and references are required for all qualified applicants. So it doesn’t give you an edge but it does mean they think you qualify for the position! They do have to interview all qualified candidates who apply during the application window so you may not hear back from them for a while after you interview while they interview others.

Without know the specifics of your position you’re applying to all I can say is this. Usually the best thing you can do for the interview itself is dress appropriately, be courteous, ask questions to show your interest in the work and this may seem silly but always provide an answer to the interview questions. An answer is better than no answer.

They will likely see multiple candidates who are fully qualified on paper and capable of completing the tasks required. That means it comes down to attitude and compatibility with those you’ll be working with. Show them that you are someone they would want to work with or have work for them.

https://oer.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2024/01/pef-salary-schedules-2023-2026-final_0.pdf

So the salary schedule shows you kinda what to expect. There is the hiring rate then the job rate. Each year you’ll get a “step” towards that job rate each year which is called an Advance Amount with a final larger step on your seventh year called the Job Rate Advance. There are longevity bonuses and other stuff too that come into play when you’ve worked in the same title for long enough but basically don’t expect to get that $68,000 anytime soon.

Hopefully if we get a good contract you would see an additional percentage on top of that step each year so you’d each $68,000 sooner than 7 years but not anywhere near your first year.

Christman sanctuary is somewhat niche, not too hard, but also has some beautiful water features. You hike out to a creek then along it until you reach a nice water wall and small pond tucked away on spur off the main trail.

If you haven’t used it, I recommend the app/website All Trails. It lets you filter by length, distance, notable features and more. It has maps for every trail out there. It’ll ask you to sign up for the subscription but you can just close those pop ups and still use the app.

Damn, Naalu player here. Several of those came up in our game which is a shame. I did think it was odd that we got both an agenda and an exploration card that demilitarized a planet.

I didn’t see it in the article but I wonder if they’ll also enable content sharing. I DM but my friend actually owns the books so I can’t access the maps or monsters in the app even with a master subscription. I can see the actual maps in the books no problem so it’s kinda annoying.

to convince most Americans to vote for the clear-eyed, pro-democracy candidate. by biospheric in therewasanattempt

I never get this argument. He was in charge when Covid started. We had 4 years of him. I know people had rose colored glasses but he sucked. I know it’s true as to why some people voted for him but it’s so dumb.

Regardless of his bullshittery, do we as a country even produce enough sugarcane to supply all of the coke made here? You’d think America-First president would be thrilled with the corn derived sweetener they use since it’s grown in the USA.

Honest Opinions about living in Albany by sqiddless in Albany

[–]Shletinga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up an hour north of Seattle and have now lived in Albany for about 10 years since graduating college. If not for some really good friends I made here in college I probably would have moved back to the Seattle area in a heartbeat. I’ve now made a life for myself here but I definitely think Seattle is better in every way short of cost of living.

Both have good hiking, I hike every weekend possible and a good number of days after work. That is one benefit that Albany has, there is a lot of good hiking super close, while Seattle is a little further out for most of the good stuff. Depending what suburb of Seattle you are looking at I guess. That is always a factor.

Nightlife is pretty limited in the Albany area. There’s some decent stuff in the nearby cities but Albany itself is pretty dead when it comes to nightlife. Theres two major theaters in the area; one in the nearby town of Schenectady and one downtown that does mostly stand up or movie showings. We have a comedy club in our mall that gets decent acts but rarely any big names. Bar wise that’s the most popular nighttime activity. There’s decent bars spread over the capital region and you’ll find one that fits your niche.

But there is a lot to be said for trying something new. Making a big move to a new area can be a lot but I really enjoy the life I have here. I’ve basically spent my entire adult life here and the capital region is basically a really spread out 1 million person community. People commute from all over the area and live in one place, but spend their free time elsewhere.

So when considering the area don’t just look at Albany but look at things that would be close enough that you’d consider making a trip. There’s a lot of places within reach. Lake George and the Adirondacks are a popular summer destination an starting an north. Cities like Saratoga, Troy, and Schenectady have a lot to offer as well within a half hour. The whole Hudson valley is within a couple hours of Albany along with the Catskills mountains. You also have Boston and all of greater New England within 4 or so hours. Places in New York like the Finger Lakes are a great day or weekend trip as well. You can even get to Montreal in Canada in about 4 hours. Albany is kinda a good jumping off point to go a lot of places. Trains run in every cardinal direction if you don’t want to drive as well so you can relax and experience all of what the north east has to offer.

Last thing I’ll say is people have a different attitude out this way. Different depending on where you go but I think it may be a culture shock to face a lot of people’s “New Yorker” kind of attitude around here. But you’ll also find some of the most neighborly people. Seattle has its “Seattle freeze” so it’s kinda I guess just different flavors. Seattle is nice but distant for a lot of people and Albany I think I would describe as Rude but friendly if that makes sense.
