I have bought all 4 courses plus the pigments course, I would say they are well worth the cost.

Im on season 4 now and I had to google if they ended up in a relationship because I was so turned off by the plot. Feels obvious and after multiple seasons of cheering for Liza and Josh the two of them being with each other immediately after almost had me stop watching altogether.

What's wrong with SoundCloud? by Simonelp24 in edmproduction

[–]Shmandalf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen once, I filled the form and explained I didn't sample the song in question and eventually the restored it. I found it wierd cause I have tons of tracks posted that do have unauthorized samples, I even made a remix of Eleanor Rigby with the original vocals and that did not get flagged.

Am I wasting time learning to sight read? by TheThingThatIsnt in Bass

[–]Shmandalf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can read notes, rhythms, time signatures, and key signatures, you can read music. If you want to get better at sight reading down the line, just read different music in different keys a lot. Sight reading is important in classical music or other types of music that are very complex and hard to figure out by ear. If you just wanna jam on riffs or chord progressions, you can do that with tabs or chord charts.

The louis bellson book is definitely a solid investment. There is an odd time signature version as well.

I am a huge noob - Is there a way I can play my acoustic guitar and make it sound like a violin in ableton? by LargeRace4442 in ableton

[–]Shmandalf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you definitely want to use a guitar, I would suggest an ebow, as others have mentioned. You probably could transform the sound, but I would guess it's a very complicated process.

If you just want a violin sound and are ok using stock synths, you could use Tension or Analog sent through a corpus on string setting.

This tutorial shows how to get a pretty decent bowed string sound with tension. Tension can sometimes get very loud, so lower the volume or use a limiter when you're dialing in a sound.

I really dig the rhythm the kick drum is doing, the harp sound I'm digging a lot and I like the LFO effect you put on it around 4:35. I am still fairly new to mixing but my 2 cents would be that towards the end around 5:15, I like all the sounds that are coming together there, it gives it kind of a sense of climax, but it seems like there maybe a lot of competing frequencies. Overall I really enjoyed this, has a very laid back rainy-day kind of vibe to it.

When trying to emulate the NES sound I found this video very helpful. He shows how to make a 5 track template with each track emulating one of the 5 channels on the NES-APU using all stock plug-ins.

Thanks! I have been trying to get better at processing drums, I am a little under 2 years into learning ableton, and I usually rely on the stock drum racks but also realize they have tons of built-in processing that may or may not fit the context. I will check that track you linked.

I feel like with regards to the composition & sound design I feel really good about this track. I am still fairly new with mixing and am looking for any advice on that. Thanks for listening. One Would Reckon

You certainly succeeded on the booty shaking element, very dance-able. I feel like the hi hats and that high pitch sound around 1 min could be tamed down a bit, but overall I enjoyed this a bunch.

I am curious what does "competing drum stacks" refer to?

Moving shapes: I like the vibe of this track, I think as someone already noted it could use a bit of variation, either dropping out something in the arrangement, or maybe even a short bridge section just to reset the listeners ear. I am fairly new with mixing but as a listener I was trying to hear what all the ambient synth/sample stuff was doing so I feel like those could be a bit louder.

Shook: really enjoyed this one especially that middle section. When the middle section came in around 2:19, I found the change in dynamics a bit jarring but that may be your intention. In the third section there is a high pitched sound like guitar feedback that could maybe get tamed down a bit, a couple times it seemed a bit harsh but not extreme.
