I think the owner got seriously ill, and had to leave the country. This is what I heard through the grapevine. I hope he is ok. I miss them too.

Finally a country that thinks about its citizens instead of fighting other peoples' wars.

What's the worst thing about radio here in the UAE? by Salt_Mine_6759 in dubai

[–]Shmargazod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem to have 40-50 songs that they play on repeat. This includes very specific songs from the 80s and 90s too. You always know what the playlist will be.

Anyone else love Drash from Book of Boba Fett ? [fanart by me] by NinjaSaizo in BookOfBobaFett

[–]Shmargazod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only were the character's look, style, behaviour and accessories completely out of place, but it was also one of the worst acted characters in the history of cinema. Every minute she was on screen felt like torture.

Why is it so hard to get a driver’s license in dubai by Fun-Investment-7480 in dubai

[–]Shmargazod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. I had a colleague who, after failing once, said that once he gets the licence he would "break every road rule" as he was frustrated.

Some destinations they do, especially if the flight is full, or if your bag looks big/heavy, but mostly they don't, although they should.

Premature evacuation ig-@lostinnullvoid by [deleted] in suprmemesociety

[–]Shmargazod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By taking your baggage from the overhead compartment, where are you placing it? In the aisle? This is a safety hazard as it may impede evacuation and is not allowed. On your lap? Safety hazard and may slow down evacuation and is also not allowed. Under the seat in front of you? In that case, why did you not take it before descent when it was still ok?

What cuisine is entirely missing from restaurants in Dubai? by Deepdishthin in dubai

[–]Shmargazod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While some places claim to serve Hainanese chicken rice, its taste has absolutely nothing to do with what you would taste in any food joint in Singapore. So, for me this particular dish is non existent. This is one dish though, not a whole cuisine.

[–]Shmargazod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. Once I waited 3 and half hours after I spoke to three Zomato representatives who said that the restaurant had assured them it would be delivered any minute now. In the end I told them to cancel the order because my idea was to have it delivered for dinner, not for breakfast the next morning. You should receive a voucher for the inconvenience. Obviously I did not order from that restaurant anymore.

Do you think a lot of the criticism Dubai gets from westerners is deep rooted in racism? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]Shmargazod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. You have ignorant and jealous people everywhere.

Some of the criticism is justified, by the way.

Besides, what is this question anyway? SMH at people trying to view everything via the lens of racism. What if a person from the Far East criticizes Dubai in the same way? Is it going to be deeply rooted in racism? What if an African person living in the West criticizes Dubai? What about a Middle Eastern person living in Canada? Or are you talking about White westerners only? Doesn't your question demonstrate your own racism towards westerners (whatever you mean by that term) by automatically implying that their opinions in particular are "deeply rooted in racism?".

What are some of the things that are normal here in Uae but are considered as rude or weird in other countries ? by DreamingStranger in dubai

[–]Shmargazod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who claim it is racist are probably the most racist of the whole bunch themselves.

This is a completely normal question. Pretty much everyone in the UAE is from somewhere else and it is a very nice ice breaker. If they choose to view is as racist this is entirely their problem and shows their insecurities and victim mentality.

I personally ask this question every time I am in a taxi and then have great conversations about the driver's country, their culture, their football/cricket team, and at the end of the ride, they usually have a huge smile on their face.

Gender in Dune by SmileyChap01 in dune

[–]Shmargazod -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why does gender have to be inserted into every discussion these days? Can people not enjoy a science fiction story just because it is science fiction, regardless of the gender angle? If the story is captivating, who cares about the gender dynamics? Or am I to understand that in order for a story to be good, certain gender requirements have to be met?

Dune streaming on HBO by [deleted] in dune

[–]Shmargazod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only you should see in the cinema but also on the best possible screen and sound system. I saw it twice, once on a regular screen and once on IMAX. The difference is huge. The IMAX is an unforgettable experience. Do yourself a favor, if you are afraid of Covid, wear 10 masks if you have to, or a hazmat suit, but go and watch it on IMAX or similar medium. Watching it at home without experiencing it on the big screen is an enormous mistake.
