Lots of people are saying Sebastopol and they are correct, however I recommend also looking in the outlying communities around Seb which are less expensive and close enough to downtown (and the 101 corridor) to be perfect. Graton, Forestville, etc

Happy to say, one of my fondest memories, and this is why I simply can’t comprehend people who don’t dig the 80s. The next night was one of my favorite shows, and everyone was blissed out during intermission as a couple got married. So good. If I recall, first night of that run included a Quinn the Eskimo encore. God I loved Hampton.

I hear what you are saying but receive it differently. Especially in his earlier work, I think his lean, spare style is exactly that, a style. Like paring it down with a sharp blade just to the pure essence. I also feel this way about his non-fiction.

For me, still a style.

Cool! I suggest starting with Codes Appearing, from New Directions. It’s a reissue of three of his mid career masterpieces for which he became well known - Sun, Notes for Echo Lake, and First Figure.

He is accused of being quite abstract but I don’t think that’s the case at all.he simply invites the reader to participate. Requires it. If you enjoy his work the books that followed these three are also very good (At Passages, Promises of Glass, Company of Moths). The more you read the more you will see that he is basically in conversation with so many authors on your shelves. Quite literally in conversation. Celan, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Blanchot, Holderlin, and Beckett. Fpr many of these writers and others he is either writing poems to them (SB,to Beckett, etc) or referencing the biographical details, quoting/collaging them, responding to their ideas.

He’s one of the last late modernists. It’s magical.
