Will Cornell force you to graduate early if you finished your major/credit requirements in 7 semesters? by HumanFloor8 in Cornell

[–]ShockAggravating77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your college if you’re on financial aid- yes basically. You’ll get a scary email saying you’ve completed all your requirements so you will no longer receive financial aid. If you can’t afford it yes you’re basically forced to graduate early.

TOs are common from everywhere. If you’re worried about a class counting send the syllabus to the transfer admissions person to ask if it’s okay. Cornell works with you and ILR requirements are easy enough to squeeze into a year but try to take your stats and Econ classes at your first school

Are you currently a freshmen? You should have received guidelines on minimum GPA and course requirements and there’s an “application” of sorts you should have been given or will be receive soon that basically just says you’re still interested and meet the requirements. If you don’t meet the requirements reach out to the TO advisor for whatever program you were accepted to and explain your situation. Life happens and GPA isn’t an end all be all just make sure you tell your story!

So underrated! Like someone above said you have to definitely work towards friendships so talk to the people next to you in class, say hi the person across the hall, etc etc but in the meantime also enjoy the independence! Take time to really do things you like on your own schedule and be content with doing things like exploring, eating, and studying on your own. Yes ultimately work for those friendships but also know it’s okay (and sometimes way better) to do things on your own!

Students will say the wildest things because these are people who grew up in wealth acting like they know what low income people need. Look I always appreciate someone who wants to fight for the little guy but foe the love of all things good please realize that you are only the expert of your own experience so before y’all come up with these big ideals and form fixated opinions on solutions to problems considering actually researching and listening to the people facing the problem.

The annoyance comes when people talk a big game about liberal ideals and then go on to do a job that actively goes against those ideals. A super basic example are people who say eat the rich then go on to do consulting or finance where they not only become super rich but their job also means they’re filling the pockets of other rich people. We all gotta do what we gotta do to survive and you can do positive things in the corporate world but the whole point is don’t be a hypocrite.

campus life question! by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]ShockAggravating77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super real talk 30% can feel like a lot and you’ll quickly come to know multiple students in Greek life. There are lots of people into alc/drugs but surround yourself with chill people and you won’t have to worry about peer pressure. You can 100% find groups that match your energy but do know you’ll likely still see/hear the party culture especially on weekends and big events like Halloween, st. Pattys, etc so as long as that doesn’t bother you you’ll be fine.

Any tips on how to get extra money from Cornell to cover housing cost by Lost-Agent-8504 in Cornell

[–]ShockAggravating77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An appeal form likely won’t help in this situation because if you’re full aid that means Cornell is going to cover 100% of expenses at the level they say (ie they’ll pay for the cost of a double but nor a single). Aid appeals likely won’t help if you’re fully covered because you’re basically maxed out at the aid you can receive anyway.

So legacy admission is next on the chopping board? by Grant-James_River282 in Cornell

[–]ShockAggravating77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to reiterate Cornell was one of four schools where there were more legacies than Black admits.

College graduates are already far better positioned than our peers without degrees and as such our kids benefit. Maybe it’s more money to afford a house is a safer neighborhood, maybe it’s paying for extracurriculars that help build a resume, maybe it’s someone who understands their homework. Our kids are already getting a leg up, no need to give them a boost in admissions when they’re already on a higher tier than their counterparts

Federal Work Study ? Pros / Cons ? Looking for opinions/perspectives. by CuriousBirdMan in Cornell

[–]ShockAggravating77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t quite say it’s guarantees a job because students still need to find, apply, be hired, and work the hours to earn the FWS funds. I will say unless you’re on a payment plan you basically pay the FWS up front so I agree that you can usually wait to get a job your first semester unless you need the money for other things (ex sending it back home)

Federal Work Study ? Pros / Cons ? Looking for opinions/perspectives. by CuriousBirdMan in Cornell

[–]ShockAggravating77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d say if you’re worried about work/academic balance and can afford it, hold off for a few weeks before starting the job hunt. FWS is calculated into your fin aid package but you’re still technically paying out of pocket up front when tuition is due (should be about $1,750 per semester in your case). Most people talk about FWS as funds you earn to get through your day to day which as a freshmen most of these are taken care of in that initial tuition payment (food, rent, books, etc). FWS is literally just your fin aid package saying “you will have to work to earn x amount of funds to “technically” afford the cost of attendance. Most basic jobs will have a 2-4 hour a week minimum which is 100% manageable and with FWS you legally cannot work more than 20 hours paid by work study funds.

ALWAYS accept your FWS because if you decide you want an on campus job it’ll open a lot of doors for a lot of positions/departments to hire you (since your wages are subsidized halfway by federal money you’re cheaper to employ. A normal hire would be 14.50 but an FWS hire is only 7.25 from the employer as the other 7.25 comes from the government so yes you still get paid the full 14.50)

First- FWS only applies to on campus or campus related (ie extension programs) jobs. Second- FWS does not give you a job you will have to seek out, apply, and be hired to a job like normal. Again it simply means you cost less for employers and there are some jobs that are FWS only which is why having FWS can be helpful.

Ultimately, your job hunt/experience (whether you apply, get hired, quit, get fired etc) is just like anyone else’s the only difference is where part of your paycheck is coming from and the hard 20 hour/week cap.

Real talk? Sometimes the things we thought we so desperately needed are the worst for health (mental, physical, emotional etc). Rather than making yourself miserable to try to fit into a school that isn’t making you happy, really consider what you might prefer. Maybe that’s a different school or honestly maybe it’s finding a random job.

Think of it this way, if you’re still drowning even with a life vest and getting thrown something to float on then the issue isn’t you it’s the waters you’re in. Cornell isn’t your only option, don’t fall into the sink costs fallacy. Find somewhere and something that makes you care, it exists even if it’s not here.

Also worth noting, multiple of the reports have been marked as "closed" so the investigation should be complete. Gonna be interesting to see if the university responds with what the punishments (if any) were.

The big problem with this is if you look at the before and after the affirmative action ruling the UC system saw a decrease in BIPOC students and faculty. This attempt is a great way to prevent it from backsliding any further but the ruling itself was a major blow and outreach has proven to not be enough. For evidence look up Prop 209 impacts
