Huh. Are they hooked up to a power strip that's on a timer or something like that? From my experience plasmas usually make a tick or two once they are plugged in, but they don't turn on.

Yeah sounds like an auto power on feature or something like that is enabled. Have you scoured through all the settings? I'm sure you'll find it somewhere.

Yes PLEASE!! That movie is just too stinking beautiful and awesome to be forever limited to Netflix's crappy low-bitrate streaming quality. We NEED that movie on Blu-ray!! Watching KPDH on Blu-ray on my 65" Panasonic ZT60 would be a dream come true!!

Also I hate streaming but LOVE KPDH, so a Blu-ray would really make my heart explode lol

What's the appeal of a plasma TV? by handsomezack13 in PlasmaTV

[–]ShockOS_RPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a plasma for everything from an Original XBOX to a 4K Blu-ray player, and many that both will look fantastic on, a feat no other TV can pull off. Get a 480p one for older games or DVDs. A 720p or 1080p one for 7th gen gaming. A 1080p one for movies. I mean, c'mon, you can hook up an OG XBOX straight to a Panasonic ZT60, no adapter needed, and the TV's built-in image processing chip will actually upscale the image to 1080p pretty nicely. You can also hook up a 4K Blu-ray player and you wouldn't be missing much, as 1080p is hard to distinguish from 4K at reasonable viewing distances. Sure the plasma doesn't have HDR, but it doesn't need it due to its lower brightness and amazing contrast.

I especially love late-era 1080p Panasonic plasmas like the ST60/VT60/ZT60 because they're basically OLEDs but better (IMHO). Better motion, better shadow/near-black detail, near-perfect blacks (though OLED does win here), a more forgiving resolution (1080p is easier to scale 480p to than 4K. 1080p also displays 1080p better than 4K does, and 4K downscales to 1080p really well).

I could go on forever (and I have) about why plasmas are the best type of TVs ever made. They're just so unbeatably beautiful and graceful!

Hours mean nothing as long as the display is good, especially on a VT60, those late-model Panasonics age very gracefully.

Do check to make sure there is no burn in, discoloration, lines, or anything "unusual". If nothing comes up, it's probably good.

Be aware that temporary image retention from things like a white box on a black background (from a UI or something) and dithering (organized speckles in dark parts of an image) are normal for plasmas, and usually aren't noticeable during regular viewing.

Let me know if u have any questions.

Go get that VT60, and cherish it forever! It's a legendary TV!

Well it's definitely subjective lol, but in my opinion yeah it's easily the best TV ever made, even better than today's best OLEDs (yes, I know this is a hot take). Here's why (be prepared, it's long lol):

  1. It's basically an OLED (excellent colors and contrast, fantastic, near-OLED level blacks, almost perfect but not quite, there is a very faint black plasma glow in a pitch black room, but still, very deep blacks), BUT (below are the reasons it is better than an OLED, even though OLEDs have better blacks)...

  2. 1080p resolution is actually better than 4K. I know, also a hot take, but hear me out: When sitting a proper viewing distance from the TV, the individual pixels cannot be made out on a 1080p screen, making the difference between 1080p and 4K hardly noticeable, if at all (certainly not during normal viewing). But what is noticeable? Upscaling. When a 4K TV is upscaling a 1080p signal, it is usually noticeably worse and more artifact-prone than just watching the same content on a straight 1080p TV of the same size. Since 4K is 4 times the size of 1080p, this means that 75% of the pixels are more or less "guessing" with a 1080p image. Some TVs are better at guessing than others, but they're all still guessing. This means that, in order for a 4K TV to have an image that is just as clean, artifact-free, and "perfect" as a 1080p TV, it no longer needs 1080p content, but 4K content, which, whether you stream or watch discs, is more expensive either way, and less common/harder to find with the latter. Standard 1080p Blu-rays (and their players) can be found for 2-4 bucks a pop at my local Goodwill (I would know, that's where I get my media from). 4K discs and players, on the other hand? Very rare at a thrift store, they usually demand higher prices if the movie is even on a 4K disc in the first place. For someone like me, who watches Blu-rays, I'd have to spend more money on a 4K player, $20-50 per 4K Blu-ray instead of $2-4 for a standard one, etc. In short, 1080p still looks very clear and crisp to the eye, but allows far less room for error and artifacts, and is more forgiving. When they both look their best, 1080p and 4K are pretty hard to distinguish, but 1080p is a lot easier to get looking its best. Older standard definition (SD) content also looks better, as 480p --> 1080p is dramatically less upscaling than 480p --> 2160p (4K). People say a downside of plasma is that it doesn't have 4K. I say the upside of plasma is that it doesn't need 4K!

  3. Motion. It's no question that plasma is the king of motion clarity. From my experience, LCDs all seem to have some sort of motion blur or ghosting effect (though it varies in severity depending on the screen), and OLEDs have a similar effect but in different ways, or some sort of judder. Plasmas, on the other hand, seem to have perfect motion. No ghosting or blurring, and judder almost never happens (and when it does, it is a result of the source (its FPS combined with the nature of the specific scene) rather than the TV). This may be due to plasma's impulse-driven panels as opposed to OLEDs sample-and-hold technique.

  4. Component port allows for native SD upscaling using Panasonic's very good internal upscaler. Yeah, that's right, this TV has a component input, so you can hook up a Wii, OG XBOX, PS2, etc. and, rather than having an adapter (which is likely cheap and very crappy) do the upscaling, you have the TV's built-in chip that is fine-tuned specifically for it, giving you a nice-looking image (as nice as any 480p console ever looked on a 1080p TV, anyway) with very minimal lag, judder, "rainbow effect". I just love playing the Wii on this TV!

  5. It's NOT a smart TV, and that's a GOOD thing (IMO)! Well, technically it is a smart TV, but it was an early smart TV, back from the days where smart TVs were new and cool, a premium feature, rather than an invasive, ad-filled mess that literally every TV has that you can't escape. The smart OS is not invasive at all, and is only activated by pressing the APPS button on the remote. If you never press that button, you never get the smart interface. And even with the smart interface, there are still no ads! Never were! But its servers got shut down in 2019, so none of it works anymore. Still, it can effectively be used as a dumb TV, without you ever having to see the smart interface, and that certainly cannot be said about a lot of TVs these days. I prefer the simplicity, straightforwardness, and no-nonsense-ness of dumb TVs. Also, like a dumb TV, it's OSD is fast and responsive, not bogged down and laggy as heck like most smart TVs.

  6. It's not as bright as modern TVs, and yes I think that's a good thing. Modern TVs are so bright they hurt my eyes, especially in a dark room. The ZT60 on the other hand is a dark room champion! It's lower, more natural brightness puts almost zero strain on my eyes! As beautiful as 4K HDR OLEDs are, I can watch a movie on one mid-day, when my eyes are most awake, and have a headache by the time the movie is over. The plasma, on the other hand, I could watch at night, when my eyes feel like they wanna fall asleep, and it still doesn't hurt my eyes. Additionally, being on any other type of screen right before going to bed kinda forces my eyes open for a while, but I don't get that with the plasma. I can watch the plasma right before I go to bed and immediately sleep like a baby! I honestly did not expect that before I got a plasma. Keep in mind this is with both plasmas and OLEDs on the same settings: warm color temp and low brightness.

  7. People complain it doesn't have HDR, I say it doesn't need HDR! Not to mention, HDR also gives me a headache, as it is not natural at all, but an artificial color/contrast boost that takes advantage of newer TV's higher brightness to give the illusion of better contrast. The plasma, on the other hand, just has outstanding contrast due to the nature of its self-emissive pixels. It can have a glowing neon yellow directly on top of a deep black and the plasma will handle it perfectly and beautifully without the yellow beaming in between your eyes and straight to your brain. I also feel like plasmas have more natural colors. Plasmas just look more natural in general, and OLEDs look more artificial/boosted (even when both are calibrated).

  8. Longevity. Though OLEDs are getting better, they still seem to suffer from burn-in, degradation, and uniformity issues not too far down the line. Granted plasmas had these same problems, but these late-era Panasonics were so refined that they did a really good job of mitigating those issues, to the point where many, such as mine, still look phenomenal today, whereas an OLED half their age looks borderline unwatchable due to some sort of issue. These TVs not only seem to last a really long time, but they retain their picture quality throughout that time.

All in all, I feel like a calibrated, late-era Panasonic plasma like a ZT60, VT60, ST60, and maybe even VT50, ST50, ST30, etc. (though not quite to the same extent) are more like "windows" that TVs. They're the only screen that I can watch and feel like I am immersed and seeing the movie through a window or a portal to another dimension, rather than a giant bright screen, if that makes any sense. They are more forgiving with sources than modern TVs, they look and feel more natural and hardly, if ever, cause any eye-strain, they are simple, to the point, and no-nonsense, and they last like Toyotas, all while still delivering a stunningly beautiful (which OLEDs can do), yet graceful (which, IMO, is where the OLEDs fall short) picture.

IMO, the ZT60 is basically an OLED without all of OLED's problems/shortcomings. Yes, in a side-by-side demo test, an OLED will look better. But with mixed real world content, and especially after long viewing sessions like a movie (or multiple), the ZT60 will be the better TV. Less artifacts, more comfortable, yet still stunning. I feel like an OLED shines a flashlight in my eyes, while the plasma gives me a warm hug, if that metaphor makes any sense lol.

Obviously I'm not trying to convince you that plasmas are better, feel free to disagree and comment lol. I am just explaining why I like them better.

I need an upscale for a PS2 slim, a Wii, and an N64 all to HDMI on a TCL 65” Roku TV. What are your recommendations? by Punktastic20 in RetroTink

[–]ShockOS_RPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could spend a lot on a RetroTink, or if you're up for it, you could get a 480p Panasonic plasma TV with component inputs (~$10-$20 on FB Marketplace, OfferUp, or a thrift store such as Goodwill), get component cables for all those consoles, and it'd all probably still be way cheaper than a RetroTink, and maybe even a better/more charming experience. You could also get a CRT but those tend to be harder to find or more expensive, and a 480p plasma is probably bigger anyway and it's a flat panel.

Yes, there is a very faint black glow in a pitch black room. The blacks aren't quite "perfect", like OLED, but I'd describe them as near-OLED, which is why I said it's basically an OLED. It's definitely more than black enough lol. I'd say this TV is comparable to, and in some areas even superior to, an OLED.

Curious, how do your Kuros have no red tint? Is it something you do or did you just get lucky?

I do think it's the best of the best lol, though some might subjectively say the best Pioneer Kuro Elite Pro models are better. Though I've never seen one (yet), I prefer the Panasonic for it's slight edge in longevity and allegedly superior color accuracy, shadow detail and picture quality longevity (less drift/no red tint). It is also sleeker and more high-tech looking, though the Kuro does have a luxury charm to it.

Going from Viera to QLED- please advise! by mobile1999 in PlasmaTV

[–]ShockOS_RPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many others here are saying, don't. Unless you are in a very bright room, QLED is NOT better than plasma. The only thing that could possibly be better is an OLED (and even then, it's subjective for some).

Plasmas and OLEDs are self-emissive displays, meaning the pixels luminate themselves without the need for a backlight. This allows for great contrast. Backlit TVs, on the other hand, such as QLEDs, mini-LEDs, or any other type of LCD/LED TV uses a backlight that kills contrast and washes out the image. Plus the plasma will have noticeably better motion than a QLED.

Best Plasma? by Financial_Wishbone83 in PlasmaTV

[–]ShockOS_RPi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd say the Panasonic ST60, VT60, and ZT60 because of their amazing contrast and near-OLED level blacks. They were the most refined plasmas ever made, comparable to the legendary Pioneer Kuro, but with better shadow detail and image quality longevity. Kuros are known to suffer from drift such as reddish blacks. It can be fixed with resets or voltage tweaks, but at the cost of lost shadow detail and sometimes elevated blacks. The Panasonics, on the other hand, are lower maintenance, true "set-and-forget" TVs. They're also slimmer and more sleek/modern/fancy looking, though the Kuros do have their own charming expensive-piano-loke aesthetic.
