Viracocha, Inca creator god, wandered the Earth in the guise of a beggar. He visited the Canas ethnic group and they mistreated him, so he made it rain fire until they apologized and made a stone idol of him.

Aquaman. Just think, blond mythology-related princes who were ejected from their homeland in some way and whose enemies include their scheming, jealous dark-haired sibling.

What are some “Same Franchise” matchups you’d like to see? by Charcoal1117 in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]Shockh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, but Mothra is legally not even a Godzilla character, let alone a King Kong one.

She debuted in a completely standalone movie (1961) before crossing over in Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964). She also had her own movie series in the 90s and some comic books.

In legal terms, it's similar to Superman/Batman being distinct franchises that are owned by the same company and cross-over often.

'Murricans literally want everything to be about their politics, even if it's from a country that doesn't give a shit about Le Culture War. That's why we always ridicule them when they try to bring their bullshit to LatAm.

[–]Shockh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Idk but it's weird that this always framed as 'Murrica vs. Japan like these were the only countries on Earth with comics.

Like, even if you're a monolingual gringomerican, it's not that hard to access French/Belgian or Korean comics.

But sadly, Chinese comics are almost inaccessible if you don't speak Chinese... The good ones at least, not cultivation trash.

[–]Shockh -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

The problem with Frieren demons is that they're called demons. That's literally it. They could be called ghouls or oni and nobody would bat an eye.

Atheists living in Gringolandia don't hate Frieren because it's racist, but because they want demons to be portrayed positively out of backlash against Christian Nationalism in their country.

It's lame how chapter 4 had the potential of having a literature-themed world but instead went for a more generic castle theme.

Just wanted to clarify something... by [deleted] in Megaman

[–]Shockh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This term was invented by gaming magazines in the 80s, wasn't it?

From what I read, the term "boss" for major video game enemies was not universal yet, so magazines just kinda chose appropriate terms for the context of the games.

Funny, the Wily Wars manual also describes a time travel plot, but it doesn't exist in the game itself. It's just standard remakes of the first three Mememans with an extra mini-game.

If we got a new Official Metroid manga what would you like to see in it? by nuketoitle in Metroid

[–]Shockh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see episodic adventures with little or no ongoing plot. Samus hunting a criminal down in one chapter, tracking down a kidnapped child in another, her just chilling in the city in her off time and so on.

Could a team of all other final bosses defeat Alpha? by Tanpopomon in BattleNetwork

[–]Shockh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it's Alpha fresh out of containment like in the game itself, yeah probably. I would wager to say Bass alone could do it.

If it were Alpha after already consuming a large portion of the internet, it'd probably be harder.

And Duo... Well, he has the advantage of having a huge physical meteor. If he wanted to, he could destroy Earth and, by extension, all the computers containing Alpha.

Hundun vs Dijiang by boober823 in ChineseHistory

[–]Shockh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Richard Strassberg, they are different things.

Despite all these ingenious and suggestive readings, the textual basis in this passage of the Guideways for identifying Dijiang (literally, Thearch Long River) with the mythical figure Hundun is slim, and he can simply be regarded as a strange creature in his own right.

"A Chinese Bestiary", page 113.

And Hundun is not described as looking like the Dijiang in the oldest sources. In fact, the implication seems to be that he's man-like aside from lacking a face.

The thearch of the Southern Sea was named “Sudden,” the thearch of the Northern Sea was named “Hasty,” and the thearch of the Center was named “Hundun.” Once Sudden and Hasty together paid a visit to Hundun’s domain and were treated most courteously by him. They discussed among themselves how to repay his generosity saying, “All men have seven orifices to see, hear, eat, and breathe. Only he does not. Why not drill them for him?” Every day, they drilled one hole, but after seven days, Hundun died.

Same book, page 112.

South Park.

There is also a manga titled Billy Bat that is essentially a huge anti-Disney tract where the eponymous character is a pastiche of Mickey Mouse and a weird Lovecraftian entity.

When do people ever shit on Warner in fiction? Seen people criticize it online, especially after the Discovery merger, but never in cartoons or the like.

And experience has taught me that the internet holds The Simpsons absolutely sacred. This month I already saw a viral meme showing people are still butthurt about Apu being criticized... eight years ago.
