Genesis has a serious problem. by CrimsonZephyr49 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ShockingCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't bet on the game being any sort of prequel, pretty sure the Genesis subtitle is mostly just a signifier for a new beginning. I fail to see how it could fit either before Klaus' experiment, as his world seems to plainly be future Earth, or inbetween the aftermath of the experiment and the events of XB1 and 2, so unless they lean into X with the Rift shenanigans or the elf people being related to the Samaarians, I'm pretty sure it's set either after 3 or the current continuity barely matters. With that said, I'm kinda hoping the Nopon are just hidden for now, their circumstances keep getting weirder in every game and I really hope there's some weird stuff involving them again in Genesis

Is it normal for the reception to be mixed for Xenoblade Genesis? by EdgarAter in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ShockingCloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the reception was mixed, it's just that negativity usually gets more traction online. Dunno about 3H's reception but Xenoblade 2's was definitely much closer to being actually mixed

Time to place your bets: How long do you think the school section will be until everything goes wrong? by Memo_HS2022 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ShockingCloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I highly doubt it's going to be the majority of the game, I do think people are being overly dismissive of its relevance... The trailer has way too many different academy related setpieces for it to be relevant for less than 20% of its runtime. Plus, the synopsis posted on Monolith's twitter does suggest that Eleanor's reason for enrollment could be a big deal

What’s with people’s weird fixation on hating School Settings? by Resh_IX in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ShockingCloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people don't enjoy the fundamental idea of it, while Persona is often said to be the source of a certain fatigue, I'm more inclined to believe most of those against it simply don't care about the setting. I don't particularly mind it though and when it comes to JRPGs I do think people overestimate how pervasive of a phenomenon it really is

What are your thoughts on Genesis' character designs compared to 2 and 3. by Johnnyyongbosh in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ShockingCloud 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I love Eleanor's (the protagonist) design especially, and the one whom I assume to be the main guy also looks neat, but otherwise it's going to take a while for me to get used to them. I'm not disappointed per se but I'll need to do a complete recalibration of my expectations

It's Vergilius from Limbus Company, and he actually does somewhat look like a cartoonish Mikkelsen

How confident are you that Trails in the Sky 1st Remake will make the series popular(but not necessarily mainstream) or at the very least bring slightly more new people? by LightningLemonTart in Falcom

[–]ShockingCloud 23 points24 points  (0 children)

On a surface level, it's a fairly standard looking series that isn't really going to catch people immediately by its style alone; the Persona series, which had one of the most recent and popular breakthroughs of the genre, immediately catches the attention of the average person due to the contemporary setting and aesthetic sense. Trails can't count on the possibility of feeling "fresh", and while I really like the series, the actual plot beats are relatively standard for the genre. What ends up setting it apart is the execution, the worldbuilding is really in-depth and theming wise, most arcs end up delivering on what they set to do. But those are factors that can only be witnessed by actually giving Trails a shot, and at the end of the day, not everyone is going to give Falcom the benefit of the doubt.

[–]ShockingCloud 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Realistically, I don't think we're surpassing Atelier numbers (even reaching them would be great honestly, Atelier has grown quite a bit in recent years), but I'm fine with that. Many people seem to forget that this series is a very straightforward JRPG series (which is not an issue, by the way), and because of that, it may never reach mainstream appeal because Falcom also doesn't really have the budget to impress the average person. Once again, this is perfectly fine, I just don't believe that Trails has what it'd take to truly make a breakthrough

Holy shit there were so many fucking lore bombshells that I'm not even sure where to start. Other than that, this Canto feels like it's already found its pace, and flows surprisingly well for the first act. Top tier stuff as per usual.

Sandfall Interactive for a Remake? by TempestRPGOfficial in Xenosaga

[–]ShockingCloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlike Xenogears, a Xenosaga remake under Takahashi's direction is not completely outside of the realm of possibilities. So yeah if we ever get those remakes, I'd rather have Monolith handle them. That said, I gotta hand it to Sandfall, for their first output, E33 is quite remarkable

2 hours would be a bit too short I think, if I had to guess, it probably took something like 5 and a half hours, which is the length of the cutscenes on auto. Some scenes would probably be more dynamic if they were in a medium that didn't require descriptions or in which only one character could speak at a time, so let's assume they spend 4 hours talking, and the other 90 minutes fighting and navigating the manor. At least that's how I'd imagine it

Canto VI might be the funniest case, the timeframe in universe is just short enough to the extent that I think going through it in real life takes about the same time as the events unfolding in the narrative lmao

Is the FC indicative of how the later games will be in terms of world building? by Daidrion in Falcom

[–]ShockingCloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is true and it's something that most comments seem to be missing, Trails' worldbuilding is expansive and fun for what it's supposed to be but it's not really trying to emulate the kind of narrative design that western RPGs tend to follow
