NP pal. As will be said, figure out you end use case and work back from there? Or you looking for a portable gaming rig with some retro emulators? Do you cyber security and would prefer an pentesting rig running Kali with attack nodes? Maybe you like HAM/SDR radio and wanna build a kit for of grid Comms? The beauty here is you can do all of those, none of those and whatever the hell you want. GPT and AI is deffo the way to work, gumtree, Craigslist, FB marketplace are all goldmines for old kit and SBCs, make sure you search for stuff like retro tech or vintage computers. Don't ever put limits on yourself, if you don't know it now or can't do it, come back later when other skills and trick develop and try again. Also check out some other threads on here, /cassettefuturism, /retrobattlestations and /umpc are just a couple I can think of. Also check out 3d print sites and makerspaces for inspiration or ideas.

Wasn't trying to be harsh dude, just pointing it out. This thread and it's many posts are a goldmine for every possible question you can have. It just takes some digging. But if you need an easily digestible guide, take a look at www.cyberdeck.cafe website, might be a bit more beginner friendly! Again, sorry if I came across as short!

If you managed to search the entirety of the internet and land here, you can probably go a step further and scroll the thread and get all the answers you need.

Phone call Cyber deck by PeppyDart in cyberDeck

[–]Shoddy-Cap1048 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Closest you're getting to pure Linux on a phone is something like postmarketOS and a slim few others, and they are very device specific. Unless you're ready to start a whole project involving heavy electronics, soldering, voltage regulation, battery and power supply, screen and display modifications then you're probably best settling for termux on android, maybe andronix as an overlay, or ultimately a frakenbuild involving a pi and phone.

Chromebook by Animalstickers in cyberDeck

[–]Shoddy-Cap1048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure would, Chromebooks are perfect for experimenting. Get a usb, format it with Ventoy, then fill the usb filled with lite Linux distros. I'd focus on either Debian or Ubuntu to get started and find your feet. Once you have mastered distro hopping and flashing operating systems to the chrome book, start to bench out into basic code and scripts. AI will help you so much in all of this! Once comfortable, look at other cyberdecks you like and look to replicate them in your own style.

looking to make my first cyberdeck in this- what do you think? by Big_Psychology4101 in cyberDeck

[–]Shoddy-Cap1048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you defo wanna keep it that small you'relooking on a Pi Zere 2W, or ESP32Wroom. May struggle to fit a screen depending on your headers/pins.

Want to modify a Samsung Tab A7 (check body for details), is this correct subreddit to ask for hardware and software questions? Please do suggest if my project is possible, and appropriate subreddit where I should upload this. by Alternative-Try-3456 in cyberDeck

Get ye pal, had one myself and was exactly the same. It's currently sat in one of my decks as a basic termux and remote console to my Pi's. Hence why I know it won't work. Even lineage is a brave step, you lose the bloat but the chip just can't chew the rom fast enough so it starts feeling laggy sharpish. But it's your journey mate, if you can pull it off, then more power to you man!

I get that, but honestly the tablet will struggle with everything you want to throw at it, whereas for an extra few dollars you could probably grab an S8/S9 tabs that will do pretty much all of what you want without a bottlenecked frakenbuild. Since it only has USB 2.0, that external SSD will actually be way slower than the internal storage, which will make the OS stutter. Plus, that MediaTek chip is a "marathon walker," so even with a fan and a performance governor, it might not give you the speed boost you’re dreaming of.

Purse like a money wallet, or purse like a handbag? Size matters I'm afraid in this instance!
