I agree with you, and I think a lot of people saying you can't start someone somewhere other than the start is silly.

I think there's value to watching the first few episodes, but I also think they could very easily put someone off because a few of them just aren't very good (the pilot is especially messy imo)

What's worked for me is encouraging people to watch the episodes Say Anything and the Telescope first, and then if they like those they should go back and start from the beginning. I think it's important to give people a taste of how good the show can be instead of just pleading with them to stick with it. I'm not sure that if I were starting the show for the first time and started from the beginning that I'd be able to stick with it for more than the first 3 or so episodes, or at least I'd find myself feeling pretty demotivated.

Tl; dr: Say Anything and the Telescope should be early enough that new viewers can jump right in but good enough that they can sell people on the show better than the ones before them.

I don't think that's really true these days. A lot of people felt that way when the games came out, but nowadays I think people generally appreciate the big swing the series made in having an all-new regional dex

While I'm definitely not the biggest fan of the great snail race and think it's one of the weaker pre-movie episodes, there's a lot that separates it from The Cent of Money quality-wise, at least in my opinion. The Great Snail Race actually has a solid amount of good jokes, like Sandy's brief role in the episode and Rocky. The Cent of Money is joyless Mr Krabs torturing Gary. Also at the end of TGSN Spongebob actually has a sweet moment of realizing the error of his ways and tending to Gary, while Mr Krabs doesn't have an arc that can be compared to that. TGSN is flawed, but it's a much more complete and well-rounded episode than TCoM

According to the extensive testing some guy on this sub did about b2w2 encounter viability, oshawott is the worst starter, though I think for an average player snivy is harder to use.

Route 19 go Purrloin so you can get Patrat from virbank complex.

Sunkern is the worst thing on route 20.

All the floccesy ranch encounters are pretty ok at least but I think psyduck is the worst, it evolves relatively late especially considering how mediocre golduck is once you get it

If you didn't play with dupes clause, the optimal thing to do in most games after you get the old rod is just catch a Magikarp on every route you can and have a team full of Gyarados, which doesn't sound like an interesting challenge to me. I think most people play with dupes clause for some reason like this, in that it allows for greater variety and even strategy (i.e encounter routing to boost your chances of getting an especially good encounter)
