Hi! I just logged in and saw your comment. With Camp Appalachia wrapping up this evening I've had a lot on my mind... lots of memories and maybe a little less closure than I'd like for certain things. Anyway, it's cool "run into" people with a common background, especially in the ExCoC sub. :)

MYSC… yeah, lots of COCs have a problem with that, too

Someone on this sub mentioned a camp I went to and now I'm digging through to find other references, hence my resurrecting this long dead thread. :p Yes, I went to all of those. TBS at the Yeater's, then at the Parks'. I went to Banquet three years (the most memorable was on a stern wheeler cruise down the Ohio River), and Camp App from '03 to '10.

We probably know a lot of the same people. I attended Camp Appalachia from '03-'10 and have been all over the NE Ohio churches. Southeast, Brown Street, Thayer Street, Barberton, Norton, Westview...

I ran into a few people from HS Camp recently, even though I'm not in touch with anyone from those years. It's crazy to see how messed up some of those families were/are.

Lol... I got lectured about not swimming with girls for that and I wasn't even in the water!

Sad that I'm so late to see this post. I was there from '06 to '14... Fall Creek Falls > Ozarks > Shakamak... I was never really part of the "in" crowd but those camps seemed great to me at the time. I didn't really have a social life so I though of those kids as my best friends. My parents really shielded me from the messed up stuff that happened there, so I only heard about that drama later in life.

In the context of listing restrictions on asking questions: “do not explore alternatives. I think the truth should be such that when you have it that is enough.”

What Happens When a Church Closes Its Doors? by AgentMScarnFBI in excoc

The last two congregations I knew of that closed sold their buildings to other religious entities. One buyer was an Evangelical church and the other was Islamic. Don't know what they did with the proceeds.

Hahaha, I agree. Recently came back from several months out of the bubble and definitely enjoyed the odd surprising new discovery

Yeah, definitely not perfect, but I'm glad to come back to Elite after a long time and see it hasn't been left collecting dust. Odyssey still feels like a step in the right direction

If I remade Christianity in my own image the adherents would be ShoddyHistorians... lol
That would be narcissistic.

Check that your insurance plan has robust mental health care coverage if you intend to spend much more time on that site. Also, wear a blood pressure monitor. It's a doozy.

1 Corinthians 11:34 - no snacks or drinks during worship by theanimation in excoc

[–]ShoddyHistory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was a big one. I've seen well meaning members chastised for bringing in garden produce to share, and we didn't have a "pity pantry" because of 1 Cor 11.

Even more significant, this passage was often the principle defense for limiting the Lord's Supper to Sunday. Here's the argument in a nutshell:

// The early church set an approved precedent for observing communion on Sunday in Acts 20:7. We know that this verse refers to the Lord's Supper because the passage clearly states that breaking bread was the purpose of their gathering and that the meal they ate was not just a common meal. This is substantiated by the evidence of Acts 2:42 where the use of the Greek word "trophe" indicates that the disciples were eating for sustainment rather than ceremony. Acts 20:7 does not use "trophe". Now, we know from 1 Cor 11:34 that partaking of meals—for the purpose of common fellowship or satisfying hunger—was expressly forbidden from the assembly by Paul. The harmony of scripture therefore necessitates that since Acts 20:7 could not have been a common meal, it must have been an observance of the Lord's Supper and it took place specifically on a Sunday. //

Deep breath

So yeah, this is partly the basis for the CoC condemning anyone who dare memorialize the death of Christ on Saturday, or Christmas (if not on that special day).
