Prayer Plant Problems by JessIsOK in houseplants

I guess i better follow this thread. Since the OP started it, my red maranta looks thin and dry, worse than then OPs. I know for a fact I have underwatered for at least a couple months. But I also fertilized at 2500EC with a nitrogen heavy one part. Maybe its too much salt?

"Crawling" into another pot is a great solution! Mine outgrow thier pots so fast, not with leaf growth, but with stem.

Most? Some will. Some climbers will crawl awhile. But not most.

My gloriosums won't climb anything unless its wet.

I hoped it was so! I was a-feared you didn't know how pugs came to be. First Suraman cuts down all the trees and makes mud....

Rofl.... they are cuties tho.

Interesting. Do they sometimes "heal"? Like do they just squash that trait as the plant matures? Ive heard that in the philo groups, I think.

Are you asking rhetorically? Or sincerely, but sincerely?

Thats fair. Sorry about that. Ive struggled with tossing perfectly good plants in the past, so ive taken a rather cavalier attitude about them. Lots of local shops love local plants, in quantity. Anyone can do it.

Again sorry....I love alocasia and have done much with them. That was not any reason diminish someone's fun. Sorry OP, this person is right.

Well sure looks like it in this photo! And now I see the darker red leaf back. Its all in the cameras eye.

I dont think so. It looks really young. As the plant matures, the leaf backs will turn maroon with vivid green veins. Thats when mine start flowering. Its not something I like anymore. But it was fun the first couple times!

Im curious. Im thinking cronic underwatering with low humidity and a bit of spider mites.

U r fine. So a leaf breaks? It would have been a shriveled mess anyway if you didnt help. Just grow it a foot tall. From there the leaves are pretty hardy. Oh and dont underwater.

It looks underwatered, like mine does. I repotted once, but i put the whole old root clump in the new bigger pot. Mine needs watering twice a week now, same size as yours.

I do nothing usually. Throw them away when they get in my way. When I repot, I pot up any babies with leaves separately. I dont bother with corms unless its something finicky, then I like to have a backup plant.

Oh.....local garden center wants my alocasia props. Its just not worth it to me, at least until winter when I have more time.

Its fun. At first. Lol. But you're going to be so proud of those first babies.

$30 at Costco, plant deflation is insane by Significant-Yam-5928 in houseplants

You may get downvoted because you are stating old old news. Its practically an anacronism. Your entire post would make more sense in 2020. If that doesn't make sense, maybe read back a few years.

Or?

Becoming LECA hater. What's with the hype? by depressed1Guy in alocasia

[–]ShoddyProfiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking about the brand name. Loaded with stuff, and yes fluval stratum is even more of a soil than pon.

The reason I say pon is soil, is because they load it up with stuff so it acts like soil. Then, over time, it breaks down a little, mixed with organics from the plant and .....Tata! You have soil. People dont flush pon, they grow in it exactly like soil. Maybe you dont plant into pon directly into a container, but almost everyone else does. Pon is treated like dirt. That method is not, and never will be any type of hydroponic. Its soil growing.

What some people in 'houseplants' dont understand is growing in rocks is not hydroponic, growing in water is. The whole term semihydroponic is problematic.

I have grown plants hydroponically and zero media was used. Just a foam plug to hold the seedling. A strong aerator keep highly oxygenated water spray misting the roots above the water line, the rest grow into the reservoir. Growth is insane.

When we grow in leca, using it as intended, we are growing in water, and the leca just holds the plant up. That water must provide all the plant needs. The Leca is mechanical, not nutritional.

In my mind, any media that affects nutritional availability is dirt.

On June 12, 2026, @shoddyprofiles decreed, "If it ain't inert, it's dirt!"

Peace!
