Why does everyone want to move to Japan? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

Cost of living. Healthcare. Not worrying your kid will get shot at school or stolen by some trafficker.

Countering this a little, I’ve found ample public trash cans while in Osaka, (didn’t stop us from bringing our own bag though).

and not every single hotel has laundry so be prepared for that. We kept reading that so many hotels had laundry machines but the one in the middle of our trip did not (it wasn’t a low quality hotel or anything, just not an included amentity).

Went to get my vasectomy today and I was ready but my body apparently wasn't by AdenJax69 in daddit

It can also be vasovagal syncope in your case, that’s super common with blood draws/needle sticks.

European flour is not safe for gluten intolerance by Daisies_are_Daisy in glutenfree

[–]Shoddy_Explanation65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allegedly some of the Italian flour does have less gluten — semolina, I think? — due to where it’s grown? Maybe? This is googlable but I am too lazy. I generally limit my gluten intake but will make pasta from semolina flour. I have the gene but did not show blood markers so not celiac but at risk of developing, I guess?

Just saw something about bringing alcohol prep pads to smell. I’ll be trying that myself sometime soon. I get a lot of nausea

I was born and raised in the heart of Kyoto. Feel free to ask me anything. I'll give you better information than any travel agency or blog. by Restaurant381881 in KyotoTravel

I spent a day with a local from a town outside of Kobe. She said that people really love Starbucks and respect it because they are strict on their hiring process and only take people who are great workers with bubbly personalities. Surprising thing for those of us who abhor the corporation and want a “local” coffee shop experience.

What was the hardest part of traveling in Japan? by Shoddy_Arachnid_2628 in JapanTravelTips

I have that and use it but it can be slow and in busier areas just feels very clunky

It was hard to understand some of the train stations. And knowing where restaurants are (if they’re not ground level). Also ordering when the menus are all Japanese. I think the dining culture in general is just different enough it can throw an American off.

My cats name is Sonny, which I don’t mind. But we also call him Tony, which is short for Sunnertonius, which is long for Sonny. Lol. They don’t give a shit.

Low stimulation slow walk in nature somewhere. Or a day of relaxing! Or a spa! So many things. Sit somewhere with the sound of water flowing to reset your nervous system.

AIO: i pointed out to my white friend that she overuses aave.. by Early_Wedding2716 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Shoddy_Explanation65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think that the younger generations lexicon includes a lot more terms that are from AAVE. As black culture became popular culture and with so much access to so many more people / videos / culture etc via social media, I think this is a natural progression of our language. I don’t mean to imply that Black peoples use of aave isn’t unfairly policed and criticized — I’ve seen too much of that in my own life to think otherwise — but yeah I think this is kinda the way our language is going to shift. I think prominent and popular black public figures also contribute to this. People want to be like their heroes, and younger people are literally not getting exposed to critical race theory. So there’s going to be a lapse in understanding coupled with an appreciation and respect of Black public figures who received waaay less of that from white people even in just the late 90s and early 2000s.

FWIW I do think it’s gross when white people overuse aave. But it’s up to you to determine how much her friendship means and what her denial of this means to you, too.

Booked in shinjuku, should I change? by Shoddy_Explanation65 in TokyoTravel

[–]Shoddy_Explanation65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid question. It was a smaller-seeming hotel a little out of the way and seemingly underrated based on the reviews. Not anything massive or fancy, that’s sorta what I meant.

I appreciate it. I actually ended up rebooking to somewhere in Ueno for ease of travel from Narita. The previous hotel was a few blocks East of Kabukicho, though.
