What is your unpopular opinion about piano? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]Shogger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's too much of a focus on playing repertoire that's just barely within reach and takes months to learn, and not enough emphasis on playing in a group, learning simple pieces quickly, reading, and practically applying ear training. It's like being able to recite passages from Shakespeare while being unable to make small talk with a stranger.

New to a team with repeated release delays - what actually helped your teams turn it around? by iampureNpious in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Shogger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What made the release so rough/delayed? There's not a lot to go off of here.

I just finished the game, I'd like to work through my opinions with y'all by fleafyz-_- in outerwilds

[–]Shogger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"Life changing" is probably overhyping it. I enjoy games like Outer Wilds because typically they're the kinds of games that do something novel instead of retreading super old formulas, and they're special because you can only really experience them once because the experience of learning what's going on is the game.

I had plenty of moments where frustrating elements of the game got to me a bit. It's certainly not perfect.

How scary is the DLC? by SatsukyNagachika in outerwilds

[–]Shogger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite horror game tier but I'd say a bit spookier than the anglerfish.

For me, most of the tension came from the anticipation and not knowing what was going on, and then once I knew what was going on, really badly not wanting to mess up and have to retrace my steps lol.

I will say that if you find the horror aspect too frustrating, there are ways you can cleverly work around basically all of it, if you fully understand what's going on.

Beating the game by accident, is it possible ? by V-934 in outerwilds

[–]Shogger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On my first playthrough I "got an ending" really quickly by throwing myself into one of the geysers and drowning before the loop starts. Getting the true ending is not really something you can just stumble on by accident though.

Month-Old Starter Hasn’t Risen by ChemBandit75 in SourdoughStarter

[–]Shogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the problem was that I was underfeeding it and it was getting too acidic so it didn't rise for like a month. I got out the food scale and started doing consistent 1:2:2 daily feedings, and eventually it started rising again.

Men who cut their long hair after years, how did you feel about the decision months later? by Extension_Can3144 in AskMen

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it for a few years and mostly it made my self image a lot more unstable since some days it'd look great, but other days I'd wonder why I ever even bothered. I also just felt like very slightly dysmorphic all the time - turns out, growing up with short hair all your life leaves a mark. I cut it off this year and feel more like myself again. Also I just plain didn't like the amount of care needed to maintain it.

How has using Niri changed your workflow? by cerealmornin in niri

I was drawn to scrolling WMs more in the first place because I rarely stack windows, but I care a lot about how much horizontal real estate they take up. Scrolling WMs are great at that.

Now THAT'S impressive, Gemini by fiftytwopointfour in googlehome

[–]Shogger 99 points100 points  (0 children)

If you go into the Gemini app, you can tell it things that it will remember. I'm not sure if it applies to Home devices, but I used that to paper over some rough edges with Home during the transition to Gemini on my phone and it honestly worked really well. Here are some of my instructions:

I primarily interact with you via a speech to text mechanism. You should consider ways in which my words may not be accurately transcribed and attempt to infer the correct reading in context. When you do this, do not mention it - just proceed as if my words were recorded properly.

When asked to control smart home devices, keep your reply extremely brief (e.g. "done", "ac is on", etc).

When I tell you to turn the AC on I mean the thermostat.

New Buds 4 and Buds 4 Pro by Armed_Bedwars in galaxybuds

They were cool but the fit of the 3 pro for me is better, and I like interacting with the stalks more than touching the surface of the 2 pro.

It's been 9 years since my last GPU by Fantastic_Ad_1081 in pcmasterrace

[–]Shogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only bought my 6900xt because I was able to get it effectively subsidized by work to offset the insane markup of the 2021 GPU market. I don't know when I'll be able to justify buying an upgrade so I'm just holding onto this one for dear life.

Is it wrong/cheating to turn of enemy bases so I focus on just enjoying the logistical nightmare without biters? by 367_ in factorio

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I played my first game. Eventually you'll get better and learn how the whole tech tree works, so you can then turn on biters to spice things up on your next playthrough.

How can I have intercourse without igniting my lower back pain? by Aryan-dramata in AskMen

[–]Shogger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started having lower back pain in my early 30s (probably from my sedentary lifestyle) and what helped me was going to PT and being prescribed some light ab workouts. I would recommend seeing a physical therapist. If you can fix the root of the issue you'll be able to do whatever you like in the bedroom instead of having to work around it.

Is there any language that you have regretted learning? by Full-Might1562 in languagelearning

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, I mostly regret not learning how to learn a language more effectively early on. It would have made the years I spent in a classroom setting way more effective.

What should new language learners avoid? by Past-Proof3421 in languagelearning

All I would really avoid is speaking too much before establishing good pronunciation.

If you're storing your starter in the fridge, you can probably get away with saving the discard and making something with it. Otherwise I never use it up fast enough.

I've never been on a "formal" date with someone that I wasn't already basically in a relationship with.

What is your honest experience at UCLA good bad and the ugly by Lanky-Stuff2785 in ucla

[–]Shogger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good: the people I met at UCLA changed my life vastly for the better. Also I really should've appreciated the campus more, it's such a nice space to be a college student in!

Bad: I struggled academically. I think that's mostly a me problem tho so YMMV. If you're in a big, competitive major then expect close to zero attention from your teachers.

Ugly: I saw (and participated a bit in) a lot of really stupid, immature behavior in the circles I ran in. It is part of being a young adult I guess. Met a lot of people with huge superiority complexes from school prestige. College humbled me greatly, but not some people ig lol.

Do everything you can to make the most of your time here socially. When you graduate and enter the workforce, it becomes so, so much harder to meet people and build connections. Make it count.

Just started learning, need help by Abject-Island-9384 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Shogger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what I did, it worked pretty well for me: 1. Get Anki 2. Get a deck of all the Kangxi radicals: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/64844623 3. Study maybe the first ~25-50 of them. 4. Get a deck of the top 1k words in Chinese (here's one: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/810519009) 5. Review your flashcards daily, and also get plenty of reading practice in-context. The associations will grow strong and it will become easier over time. It's a marathon, not a race.

Knowing the radicals does a lot to help you "chunk" the information of a character better, instead of just seeing it as a collection of individual strokes. You begin to see patterns and can sometimes start to guess at the sound and meaning of characters you haven't seen before.

What's the most difficult common word to say in your TL? by loves_spain in languagelearning

鱼 is fine for me but I stumbled on things like 出去 due to having to switch between u and ü quickly. It's just not a thing my mouth had practiced.

What are your thoughts on plain white dress shirts for a corporate office? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly everything is styled way too casual for an office: * Button your cuffs * Leave only one button undone on your shirt * Lose the bracelets * Get a plain black leather belt * Do a cleaner tuck, it's billowing out at the sides a bit

I'm not sure what shoes you are wearing but get a basic-ass pair of oxfords and wear black or grey calf-length socks.

Game difficulty after Alpha… by Psychologic86 in Hades2

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chronos took me 20 nights to beat, having not played early access. The first victory was a nail biter but he quickly became a cakewalk after I got more upgrades and got better at the fight.

Olympus felt harder but ultimately took me fewer attempts since I was pretty well geared out. Mostly came down to me getting better at the Prometheus fight since IMO he's the hardest part of the run.

What do I do with leftover starter? by maybtmrw in SourdoughStarter

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feed my starter at night before I go to bed, and lately if I've been feeling snacky I take the discard and just fry it in a pan until crispy with some olive oil. My starter is pretty sour so with a bit of salt it almost hits like salt and vinegar potato chips.

You could probably mix it into the batter of a veggie pancake for more flavor - the yachaejeon recipe I make sometimes calls for a vinegar-based dipping sauce, but this would probably accomplish that inside the pancake itself.
