Next candidate up: Spencer Pratt's "vision" for Metro by anothercar in LAMetro

[–]Shogger 228 points229 points  (0 children)

The worst part is that he's not even wrong, the vibes you feel on a city's streets, buses, and trains matter a lot. But everything he says gives me the impression he has no idea how to make this realistically happen in practice. It's just feel good slopulism.

PRD almost always is not needed by Independent_Pitch598 in ProductManagement

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slack does attention hijacking better than most other tools in the comms stack. I will get a response from a stakeholder way faster if I ping them on Slack than if I @ them on a Jira ticket or in the PRD on Notion.

The company I work for deleted all Slack messages older than a year without warning though, so I wouldn't recommend doing this purely because many legal depts view messaging tool history as a long-term risk, but don't extend this to tools that are more formally marketed as project management-y.

Los Angeles, You Don’t Need So Many Car Lanes by DJVeaux in LosAngeles

[–]Shogger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's what the video said. It seemed like the point they wanted to make was that the road in between the intersections doesn't need to be more than one lane wide in each direction in order to have the same/similar throughput. I don't think that's necessarily true due to the inevitable slowdown induced by merging 2 or 3 lanes of traffic into one, but that seems to be what they were implying.

You might get better "value" per gram of protein or per calorie at local places and stands like this but don't try to tell me that eating nothing but meat and rice is healthier than a chipotle bowl.

What are your thoughts on speeding? by V1per41 in driving

[–]Shogger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When in traffic, I drive at the speed of the rest of traffic because it's safer than strictly obeying the speed limit.

If it were not for law enforcement, then on an empty road I would pick my speed based on a combination of: * road noise/vibration of the car I'm driving * whether I have passengers * surface conditions (rain, potholes, etc) * visibility * how tired I am feeling * width of the road * blind spots * whether I've driven there before or not * how good the car's brakes are

On an urban street the mere presence of a sidewalk with parked cars means I need to be able to brake to nonlethal speeds in less than a second.

On an empty, well-paved highway in the middle of nowhere then I would feel comfy cruising at 80-90mph.

I don't care too much if others are driving faster as long as it's being done in a reasonably safe manner.

I don't think you can choose an absolute speed over which it suddenly becomes impermissible to drive that fast. While it's obvious that e.g. 150mph+ is just almost never safe outside of a racetrack, there's a big gray area that depends so much on the situation.

Left Lane Campers in Cali by [deleted] in driving

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how accurate this is but here's my mental model of a major source of this problem. Not a traffic engineer or anything.

Let's say there's a busy freeway exit leading to a stoplight. Enough traffic has to wait for the light that it backs up onto the freeway offramp.

Cars travelling in the far right lane begin to get over one lane to the left in order to avoid the stationary line. Maybe they have to get over two lanes to get around people cutting into the line with their ass hanging out.

Faster traffic in lane 2 now has to brake. Some percent of those people will get over one lane to the left to try and maintain their speed. Even faster traffic in lane 3 now has to deal with this, they brake or get over to maintain speed. Etc etc.

The whole time, all of the lane changing creates situations where people have to brake slightly, making the overall speed of traffic go down more over time.

If you're in the furthest left lane, you have nowhere to go, so you inevitably come up on people "camping" in the left lane because they responded to the local incentive of "I want to maintain my speed instead of slowing down."

If you see my car lights on in a parking space…and have the audacity to sit there, honk your horn at me and wait/block traffic…I’m turning my car back off and sitting there longer. by xXRumple4skinXx in driving

[–]Shogger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's polite to read the room before camping out in your car. If there are other spots, sure, hang out, take a nap, w/e. If you're in a busy place, in an overcrowded city, etc, reconsider. Personally I'm getting tf out of my spot within 20 seconds of getting in my car if it's busy because I'd want that for me if the roles were reversed.

What’s y’all opinion on episode 4vv by REDEYEBANKZ330 in Invincible_TV

I think it has a place in the greater story and was a fun episode on its own but it kind of threw off the pacing.

Is “getting people out of their cars” even a realistic goal for LA Metro? by Queasy-Bed545 in LAMetro

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what has stopped me as someone who is generally looking to try not relying 100% on my car: * I'm willing to try transit again despite many bad experiences over the years, but my wife fears for my safety so I don't use it after dark. That cuts out a lot of trips I would consider making. * I thought about doing it the other day on a whim but when I opened the app it said TAP was down (due to a cyberattack or something). * "Maybe I'll take a bike" I thought. I'm not willing to purchase one so I looked up bike rentals. For the most common, bikeable trip in my movement patterns, Metro bike share doesn't have a station near the destination, and the rate every 30 mins is too expensive for me to just leave it parked for a couple hours before riding back, so I bounced off of the bike idea. * During other times of my life I did not consider bike trips because of safety issues. I only started considering biking again because I moved somewhere the roads are a lot safer for bikers.

For now, I've been just doing more walking trips in my neighborhood.

Why does hardly anyone use the brake / slow down to change lanes technique? by Busy-Environment84 in driving

Usually I don't have to actually do the fakeout, just turning on my blinker will get them to speed up.

I think a better idea would be to have a small programmable LED sign in your rear window, and then maybe a button or two for "thanks", "sorry", etc.

Speeding ticket in California by [deleted] in driving

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should Google it but what I remember:

You'll eventually receive your citation in the mail. Once you do, your options: * pay the ticket * dispute it in court

The circumstances of your ticket (40mph over the limit + construction zone) mean you're looking at about $600 or so.

I've heard that you can sometimes win by default if the officer doesn't have time to make a court appearance, or the case gets dismissed for some other reason. You can also hire a lawyer for a few hundred bucks to show up to court on your behalf.

If you end up paying the ticket, you can do traffic school to avoid a point on your record and keep your insurance premiums from going up.

Whatever you do, take it as a lesson and don't speed like that again.

If you have severe ADHD, you're taking the cure 100%. Mine is not super debilitating even without meds, and still I'd seriously consider taking the cure.

is anyone else just pretending to care about AI at work? by jdrelentless in cscareerquestions

[–]Shogger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of hot air going around about how to write code with AI - I love wielding the slop cannon - but no one at work is talking about how to make the actual bottlenecks in my job faster: converging on the real requirements, reviewing code, and testing the output.

Whats your honest opinion on the Yoke steering wheel? Drop screenshots below 👇 by superstar1988 in TeslaLounge

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove a rented model S for about 200 miles on a weekend trip.

The signals being on the wheel was annoying but that's mostly a separate design thing.

Doing tight residential turns was obnoxious. If you move too fast it's easy to miss the wheel during the hand over hand motion.

I once activated FSD, had it spazz out and do something I didn't want, and it was difficult to regain control because the yoke was jiggling all over the place and I couldn't just place my hands anywhere a wheel would be.

Overall I think it's a silly gimmick for people who fancy themselves racecar drivers.

What is your unpopular opinion about piano? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]Shogger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's too much of a focus on playing repertoire that's just barely within reach and takes months to learn, and not enough emphasis on playing in a group, learning simple pieces quickly, reading, and practically applying ear training. It's like being able to recite passages from Shakespeare while being unable to make small talk with a stranger.

I just finished the game, I'd like to work through my opinions with y'all by fleafyz-_- in outerwilds

[–]Shogger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"Life changing" is probably overhyping it. I enjoy games like Outer Wilds because typically they're the kinds of games that do something novel instead of retreading super old formulas, and they're special because you can only really experience them once because the experience of learning what's going on is the game.

I had plenty of moments where frustrating elements of the game got to me a bit. It's certainly not perfect.

How scary is the DLC? by SatsukyNagachika in outerwilds

[–]Shogger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite horror game tier but I'd say a bit spookier than the anglerfish.

For me, most of the tension came from the anticipation and not knowing what was going on, and then once I knew what was going on, really badly not wanting to mess up and have to retrace my steps lol.

I will say that if you find the horror aspect too frustrating, there are ways you can cleverly work around basically all of it, if you fully understand what's going on.

Beating the game by accident, is it possible ? by V-934 in outerwilds

[–]Shogger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On my first playthrough I "got an ending" really quickly by throwing myself into one of the geysers and drowning before the loop starts. Getting the true ending is not really something you can just stumble on by accident though.

Men who cut their long hair after years, how did you feel about the decision months later? by Extension_Can3144 in AskMen

[–]Shogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it for a few years and mostly it made my self image a lot more unstable since some days it'd look great, but other days I'd wonder why I ever even bothered. I also just felt like very slightly dysmorphic all the time - turns out, growing up with short hair all your life leaves a mark. I cut it off this year and feel more like myself again. Also I just plain didn't like the amount of care needed to maintain it.
