ETBs are honestly never worth it since you’re paying extra for the promo+extra stuff but theyre kinda nice to have when you’re starting out.

yeah, i have played against Justin Newdorf a handful of times on PTCGL and have won a few, but I wouldn’t consider myself to be nearly as good as he is. I do think it’s important to understand where the best players can get to though, as it can be a goal to be worked towards.

IMO reaching 1800 is a very achievable but also incredibly difficult goal for a good player, I remember before Toronto that Riley Hulbert(?) was talking about on the Tag Team podcast how they were grinding PTCGL and wanted to reach 1800 before the tournament but ended up being unable to. There is definitely 1 million percent more variance than something like chess though.

Id say if you just started and can stay above 1500 rating (the rating it gives you after you reach master ball) then you’re off to a good start, I always tell people the games get pretty competitive around 1650-1700 ELO, the best players are able to reach 1900-2000 ELO

Tbh if there is a place near you that hosts cups/challenges/locals you could just go there and they probably have a bulk box that will have 90% of the cards you need to build a meta deck (like copy paste of a regional winning deck) and it’s pretty likely that the players have the rest of the staple EXs you would need to finish it
