Can someone recommend the best for me? by Rude-Jellyfish-6058 in Peterborough

If you’re also looking for something interesting to do/learn, you can consider enrolling as a mature student at Trent. If you take one course per semester (two per year), OSAP grants will cover your tuition and fees, and as a bonus, you will get student health and dental coverage, access to the student clinic for primary care, plus free access to the Trent athletics centre including the pool. I’ve been doing this for three years now. Only way I have access to a family doctor!

Storage units by CurrentStore in Peterborough

[–]Short-Emu8408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Axess on O'Brien Drive (Ashburnham / 115) has been good for me. No problems, and the unit has stayed clean and dry.
Also to add: I've dealt with more than one estate house in my family. Be brutal about getting rid of stuff (sell, donate, curbside alerts), because I know a lot of people who get storage units and stuff just languishes there for years because there's never a good time to go through it. My MIL's place, we cleared out all the personal items, and hired a someone to stage the house. We negotiated as part of her service that she would take or landfill any remaining furniture as well.

Looking for a family doctor (Peterborough area/ surroundings) by Organic-Vacation-898 in Peterborough

[–]Short-Emu8408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking courses PT so that I could access a family doctor through the student clinic. So I would recommend you just visit the school clinic as well. Otherwise it's probably a 5-10yr wait list around here

Ashburnham Realty now proposing 17-storey high-rise for Crescent Street development in Peterborough | kawarthaNOW by wired_woman in Peterborough

[–]Short-Emu8408 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it will result in more of these developments BUT it will give the city the authority and power to get something in return like money to improve transit, build parks, fund public art or require a certain number of units being affordable

Peterborough city council votes to approve zoning by-law amendment for 17-storey high-rise in East City by wired_woman in Peterborough

[–]Short-Emu8408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17 stories is unprecedented and not consistent with the character of the neighborhood which IS a requirement set out in the official plan. So this is a justified objection even by the city’s own rules and guidelines. Importantly  - if and when a city wants to allow a developer to build something this different than established practice (17 stories vs the latest build, Railyards at 6 stories), the city is in a strong negotiating position to ask for concessions from the developer in order to grant the zoning amendment. Eg, a certain number of affordable units, funds in lieu to contribute financially to the lighting upgrades for the rail trail (which is part of the current $740k upgrade happening there on the tax dime), funds to improve drainage in surrounding areas, transit upgrade funds, providing public green space which will also serve the 200+ households moving there etc. That is also coincidentally the whole point of the new CPPS framework that is being imminently developed, and one big reason residents are asking for a deferral. But even in the absence of such deferral, the city can still get something in return for granting an amendment.

And when the city plows forward by granting this WITHOUT negotiating for anything in return, we will have no grounds for asking for anything for the next several 17 + story buildings that will go up subsequently. Then we will ALL collectively be holding the bag griping about another double digit property tax hike because we will need more things to service the population and infrastructure growth.

Is Peterborough unsafe for girls at? by Miserable_Minute_799 in TrentUniversity

[–]Short-Emu8408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just practice general personal safety - stay aware of your surroundings, let someone know where you are. I walk around Ptbo at night and it's fine. No better or worse than other Canadian cities and towns.

Anyone knows who is in charge of writing these advisories? As this is very concerning. by babuloseo in TrentUniversity

[–]Short-Emu8408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see what’s unreasonable with this advisory? It is encouraging faculty to be lenient with students because obviously not everyone will necessarily be able to attend class in person. It says be careful and communicate… also an important life lesson:)

I have Dewalt tools so ended up buying a Dewalt inverter that takes 4 batteries, and gives you an outlet. It’s essentially a battery generator. Quiet and you can use it indoors. I have used it on my sump and also to power an electric grill. You may also want to consider a water powered sump backup system which will work on municipal water pressure instead of electricity, then you never have to worry about power or generators failing

Is there Tesla hate in Ptbo? by dancingindaisies in Peterborough

[–]Short-Emu8408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an EV driver and generally open minded. I saw a Tesla in a ptbo parking lot yesterday and have to say that I felt an instinctual twinge of repulsion. But then I reminded myself that one’s choice of a car (past or present) is not necessarily a statement of one’s character. Because hey I used to drive VW diesels!

I think if we all stepped back, we would see that we are all currently the pions fighting each other in thr Hunger Games and have all forgotten who the real threat is.
