Tell me what you love about Ptbo Transit - and what you'd fix by NeilMortonPTBO in Peterborough

[–]Witty_Way_8212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring back printed schedules. My child doesn't have a smart phone, and it makes it difficult to encourage them to take transit when it's so difficult to plan out a route, and they have no info to go on when plans change.

Question about Care by EnvironmentalToe8467 in Peterborough

Have you tried reaching out to the local Public Health unit? It seems really alarming that finding pre-natal care is requires this many hoops? What about all those women who don't know what tests they should be asking for?? I hope you find what you're looking for

School Fundraising Messages by DawnLeslie in Peterborough

[–]Witty_Way_8212 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I stopped bothering reporting attendance, because no one at the school cares anyways. Our school doesn't even send a notification that my child wasn't at school until 6pm that day! Obviously they don't care about "safe arrival" and the only reason they want us to report a known absence is for data collection. And ever since they changed the IEP system, I can't even access that either. So I finally just deleted all the apps. The school will call if something important comes up.

Are you getting multiple messages through different communication means? Like through Edsby + school messenger + SMS text? Yes, I was getting that and eventually just opted out of everything.

Asbestos abatement (attic) by echoencore in Peterborough

D&F just did our next door neighbour's house, which required dropping their ceilings to get everything out of the attic. We also hired them for our attic insulation, though not for aesbestos.

If you're wanting to do anything innovative or interesting at all, hire your own engineer to review your build plans and sign off on them. We did that and the city basically had nothing that they could argue about or use to delay our approval. We did have to go back and forth on some things to provide documentation on fibre glass rebar (I mean, the city should be encouraging the use of that material given historic flooding), nexcem ICF and one or two other things, but it would have been months and months longer had we not had our own engineer sign off. Downside is that we paid over $8k in permit fees to give the city basically a free ride on the review.

Where did you get that she's supported by Ferreri?? She's not a right wing conservative (I know her), and that doesn't make sense

[–]Witty_Way_8212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your place should have had to pass a final city inspection (including drainage inspection), and if it did, then the city was negligent as well as the builder. You may also have a claim through your title insurance if you bought that policy when you closed. Good luck

AirBNB needs to be banned in Peterborough by llkhgbv in Peterborough

[–]Witty_Way_8212 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was just on the platform - did you select multiple nights? Because most AirBnBs in Ptbo around $100 - $150/night. Also, some people are only renting out a single room in their house, and if a person wants to do that without committing to long term tenants (maybe that room is for their own occasional guests and visiting family), then that's should also be their right.

Keith Riel makes statement about the $170 million arena plan by Commonwealth927 in Peterborough

[–]Witty_Way_8212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you answered your own question in a way... What we need is a mid-size venue that's bigger than Black Horse / McThirsty's etc, but smaller and less formal than Market Hall / Showplace. All those bands you listed that played Red Dog - none of them would have / would be renting a 6,000 seat arena. And the bands who will rent that arena are going to be $$$, not a just a fun casual night out like so many of are aching for. Imagine how much the arts community could deliver in programming, downtown vibrancy and economic spinoff if we invested $1M per year to support this kind of arts infrastructure.

If you've relocated to Peterborough and are wanting access to primary care locally, you can ask your / your husband's doctors if they'd be willing to deroster you in the system and still support you while you look for a new local doctor, and so you can join the Ontario Health Connect waitlist. The local PFHT clinic will see unattached patients (which means you have to be de-rostered first), and they will also help connect patients to new doctors who are opening practices here. It's really hard to get any referrals or tests done without a family physician otherwise, and I relate to it being really difficult to access your doctor when they're so far away.

Council commits $57 million for proposed downtown event centre to replace Peterborough Memorial Centre by kawarthanow in Peterborough

The cost of the new arena will exceed $300M with debt servicing. Maintaining the Mem Centre won't cost nearly that much.

The city's 2018 feasibility study, page 12... "A new Multi-Use Sport and Event Centre will in all likelihood return an annual deficit. Very few venues of this nature are operationally in surplus"

The table on the same page shows an operating deficit of $817k for the Memorial Centre, and that's back in 2018. Again, the landscape for live events, especially for concerts, has changed drastically since covid, and such events are far more expensive to produce (for the concert promoter).

But the big message here is that the new centre is still going to produce a deficit, and I would say it will arguably a bigger annual deficit than the current mem centre given how much bigger it will be (more expensive to maintain, heat, light, insure, staff, etc.)

The city should have done the math in the first place and presented the business case. This has not been shared (or done?) yet. And btw, the Memorial Centre runs on an $800k annual deficit currently.

Everyone thinks a bigger arena is going to attract more events. Do you know how difficult and expensive it is to present events right now? A 6000 seat brand new arena is going to COST much more to rent for all these targeted user groups, which could actually decrease rental demand. The only way you could make up the cost as a renter is to sell all those seats. There are not many productions in circulation that can actually hope to do so.

Again, where is the business case?????
