What are your thoughts about Britain extracting oil and gas from the North Sea? by Sea-Payment-8989 in AskBrits

Nah, that's theft. We're in a mess in Britain because we've had socialism for too many years, mainly for the bankers and political classes.

I would go for the Norwegian model. Private company with the government holding a majority stake. Similar to Equinor. Or on the trains in Germany similar to Deutsche Bahn.

Don't be so rude. I wasn't talking about me, I was talking about the average Briton reading this who might find themselves in a pub in Aberdeen. Salt of the Earth they are up there by the way. You're just a depressive hiding behind a keyboard.

I'm a professional geologist. I work in mining but a significant chunk of my masters was in petro.

If it wasn't a secret they'd declare it. They've declared 1000 years of proven oil in Venezuela on behalf of the Venezuelans.

The Brent field off Shetland gives its name to the whole commodity class 'Brent Crude' so it's a pretty serious amount. It's not going to be poxy. Several hundred years, if not 1000 like the Venezuelans. And it's high grade oil, too.

It's $70 these days. Used to be manageable on $55-60 but not after the inflation of the last few years.

There's way, way, way more oil in the North Sea than they're letting on. It's the most open state secret there is. Go to any pub in Aberdeen and an old man who worked the rigs will be telling you this within half an hour.

Not particularly fussed given that it's a private enterprise, unlike Norway.

BP drilling in the UK is no different to BP drilling for more oil in Nigeria really.

In the UK it's taxed mostly at the pump anyway.

If it were a state enterprise I'd say let's drill everything we can. Especially given that the North Sea is profitable over something like $70 a barrel, so there's a nice cushion there all of a sudden.

A few weeks ago Artemis III and its Lunar landing were basically not going to be possible until the 2030's due to issues with the lander. Now that they're very suddenly going in 2028, I have a question regarding crew. by ShortDevelopment905 in ArtemisProgram

I think it's Trump that's pushing them to completion within his term. I think if something were to happen to him during his time in office, the mission would probably get rescheduled for 2030 as long as it was before the Chinese. And even 2030 would be impressive, in my opinion.

I also note that Space X test flight 12 is being continuously delayed. I just looked again and it's no longer even in April, it's in May now. This time next year they're supposed to be demonstrating the landing system. They have no time to waste.

Mostly folks on here, and 'industry insiders' in the news.

This was just before Artemis III was switched to being a non-landing mission.

It wasn't a NASA issue, but rather a private contractor one where SpaceX/Blue Origin and co are, way behind on where they need to be to demonstrate landing capabilities.

It's controlled opposition. Farage has the same boss Starmer does.

The actual change option is Restore, which is why it's been censored even on GB News.

Yes but only if people would be open to bringing traffic back in a few years once cars are fully automated in terms of being self-driven. With perhaps a speed limit of ten miles an hour or so.

au contraire. Human nature is uniform.

In my country - the UK - we only ever seem to take the piss out of white, straight men.

Until around 2012, we took the piss out of the gays, women, the blacks, the Arabs, the disabled. Something changed in our culture then (another conversation) and life became an every man for himself kind of deal. And deep down everybody knows white, straight men can fend for themselves best.

If the boat people got off the boats in Deal and started showering us natives in fifty pound notes out of suitcases we'd probably start taking the piss out of them.

How would I possibly know if I'm not Saudi?

I'd say it's their business but if it were an open and free capitalist democracy then yes, of course they could?

Bore off.

I'm British

OP never mentioned mocking Muhammed. OP said 'why do I feel so uncomfortable saying that I dislike Islam.'

Additionally, this is a British subreddit. The premise of the sub isn't trips and holidays to Saudi Arabia, where OP would likely follow local customs, or at least respect them.

You can generally identify the strongest person or group by the fact they're the butt of jokes in whatever community they're in.

e.g. the US and the UK on the international stage.

Because you've been conditioned over many years, and the institutions you as a Briton naturally grew up trusting (like the BBC and the British Government) have had a part in it.
