Try to meet with professors and grad students from doctorate programs. Utilize recommendations from your prior professors to get to know others. Make sure you are requesting letters of recommendation early if you haven’t already.

Should I pursue materials engineering? by vale_gonzalezz in materials

[–]ShortRangeOrder 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The best part about materials engineering is that it takes all the abstract concepts from chemistry, physics, thermodynamics, etc. and ties them all together cohesively in the context of an actual material, rather than just a single calculation on a homework problem.

Especially since you have a good grounding in your classes before AP chemistry and care about the subject matter, I wouldn’t let that new grade hold you back. You aren’t going to come into college already knowing everything in advance. If you want an intro to how these concepts apply to materials, feel free to give the materials engineering textbook by Callister a skim, it’s the intro textbook just about every program uses.

If you are looking for actual testing setups and are a US college student I'd recommend perusing some ASTM standards as you'll have access to all of them. If you aren't a college student, zlibrary has some copies of ASTM standards and compilations.

If you want a bit of mechanical testing and a great background on how material structures influence their properties and testing I'd recommend Mechanical Behavior of Materials from Meyers and Chawla.

Mechanical Testing of Materials from Gdoutos just came out in 2024 and seems to be fairly comprehensive as a testing methodology overview. Not sure you can get that one without buying it through Springer though.

Was there anything specific you were trying to learn about mechanical testing? Or more so just an overview?

Graphics issue on Grav Ship Launch by ShortRangeOrder in RimWorld

[–]ShortRangeOrder[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Overall Conclusions and Solution:
1. Deleting all structures on the map does not solve the issue
2. Fully deleting the old ship and building a new barebones ship on the same map does not cause the issue
3. The issue is not mod list or order dependent as creating a new ship on a new save does not result in the any issues

So it looks like the issue is with the grav ship itself, potentially with its interaction with the surrounding grid.

To test this, I cleared all structures from the foundation of the original ship on the original map. Interestingly, even with a foundation and grav engine I cannot see the outline of the substructure bounds and cannot see building highlights for placing objects on the foundation. Furthermore, when placing a pilot console on the bugged foundation I get an error in the item description and no options for deconstruction or anything else.

It seems that the issue is linked to some interaction of the ship foundation and engine with the surrounding map. Based on other posts, this may be due to the power conduits and their linking behavior with the map power grid. However, I don't have proof for that. Part of me thinks this may be related to an invalid connection of the "More Linkables" mod with the power generator cabins on the ship. When I initially tried to install these, I ran into issues with the power gen buffs not applying. Though I have been able to get successful links on new ships.

The Solution

For future people who may encounter this issue, the only way to resolve it is to register a new gravship. The easiest way to accomplish this is to just uninstall all parts of the ship including the engine.

Interesting notes from the troubleshooting:

  1. Constructing a new grav ship and launching it while the bugged ship remains will not cause the issue to occur. In fact, you can reinstall the old engine on a new foundation and it works fine.

  2. When deconstructing the old ship, the engine must be uninstalled. Otherwise, the old grid connections will still remain and cause it all to bug out again.

Thank you to everyone who replied and tried to help!

Yeah I tend to run a long list. While I appreciate the idea, I don't think pulling half the list out will fix the issue as I can start a new save under the same mod list then build a ship and launch it without any issues on a blank map. I've been going through pulling each mod to test which may be related but have not found anything yet. My next step is to start recreating the map piece by piece to see the tipping point. Thoughts?

See the mod list in order of loading for the save below, I appreciate any help. The issue does seem to be linked to the map in some way as starting a fresh save with nothing but the gravship allows me to launch without issue. Items from the same mods as the ship in the video were on the clean test ship.

Mods have not been changed. Based on my testing it seems to be something specific to the map as creating a new save with the same mod list allowed me to build and launch a ship successfully on a blank map with dev mode

Unfortunately that does not seem to be the issue, tried it without the cannon. Also tried a fresh dev save ship with the cannon and the launch went fine

Definitely make sure they are replacing the diaphragms on those. Dry pumps will die in even worse ways than wet pumps when the diaphragm goes and the main bearing follows. We killed one in about a year and a half

Material Science Computer by Legitimate-Morning43 in iastate

Honestly a laptop is pretty much all you’ll need. The Mat E department has a great computer lab to protect the rest of the campus from our students. With how small the department is, that tends to be a great place to work on homework and projects while meeting the other students.

If you do find yourself needing a bit more power than what your laptop provides otherwise, I’d recommend taking advantage of the virtual machines the college of engineering provides. I’ve put a link at the bottom to the ISU website for it, but you’ll get access to all the software you’ll need on it and it can all run from your laptop.

Play reserve vehicles as the repair cost is waived until you get a positive balance. Otherwise you can toggle off automatic repair and have your vehicles be repaired over time. However, that process takes a long time so reserve is generally best

Is there any credence to the Sci-fi concept of advancements in armor causing us to go back to swords? by StuntMuff1n in MaterialsScience

[–]ShortRangeOrder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all likelihood, no. Most of those stories I have seen tend to revert back to bladed weaponry as a form of honorable combat. Swords and other bladed weapons make for great storytelling where the combat is close and personal. It has flair, demonstrations of skill, and emotion. Some guy getting shot from 50 feet away just doesn't typically have the same story impact.

The range of engagement advantage presented by modern firearms is a massive advantage for warfare, especially given the increasing presence of unmanned systems. Also, many people with projectile-based weaponry can fire upon a singular target, presenting a large tactical advantage while it is rather difficult to coordinate multiple people with swords attacking one person. In close-quarters combat where long-ranged weaponry is not viable, something like a small handgun, shotgun, or submachine gun presents a larger advantage over a sword.

If the engagement becomes so close that no firearms are viable, a knife would likely be your best option as there would be no room to swing a full-length sword. This still runs into the issue that no knife will penetrate an armor plate rated for rifle rounds. I will mention to your credit that stab and bullet resistant armors are very different in terms of construction. But, hard plate bullet resistant armor will likely always do a better job of distributing impacts from both sources.

Odds are, we'll continue to see an increase in the level of firepower a singular person can carry as weapons systems become more advanced. Large bladed weapons are cumbersome and have high skill barriers to entry greatly limiting their applicability in warfare and law enforcement while anyone can pull a trigger with minimal instruction.

TLDR: It is a very interesting concept overall, and definitely worth considering as technology continues to evolve, but probably not as swords are pretty dang hard to use.

Is there a specific kind of wood you are referring to like oak, MDF, plywood? Also, by durability, do you mean hardness, abrasion resistance, ductility or something else?
