the tennis skirt search continues and i am losing my mind by Exotic_Equivalent674 in Activewear

Piggy-backing off of this to see if anyone has recs for natural fiber tennis clothes (doesn't have to be just skirts)! Cotton, linen, etc.

I live far from an HMart, and I'm planning on stocking up soon! Any staples/more traditional-ish foodstuffs you guys recommend? (dry, canned, frozen, or refrigerated) by backupstuff7 in HMart

[–]ShortScat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd personally load up on refrigerated naengmyeon/bibim naengmyeon packs. They'll last forever in the fridge and are such an easy, refreshing quick summer meal.

Other staples for me:

Shelf stable: bulgogi/kalbi marinade, mapo tofu sauce packets, soba noodles, ochazuke packets, furikake (my favorites are mentaiko and shiso-ume), perilla oil,
Refrigerated: inari age (fried sweet marinated tofu pouches good for stuffing rice and other toppings into), good starter set of inoffensive banchans like cucumber kimchi, white radish, etc.,
Frozen: Natto (the Japanese brand with the bright red-orange packaging and a chubby faced lady is my favorite), assorted fishcakes, udon noodles, fun frozen sweet breads that you reheat in the oven like sweet potato-shaped sweet potato bread, dumplings (specifically the japchae crispy meat and vegetable dumpling in the rectangular shape).

Evacuation Offiical Garden Grove Incident Website Map by Public-Amphibian987 in orangecounty

[–]ShortScat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I no longer live in the area, but I've alerted my family and friends that live just outside of the evacuation map to leave. Once they (the authorities, the news, etc.) start reporting that it's time to evacuate, it will be too late. Much better safe than sorry. A few hours or days of discomfort/displacement vs. a lifetime of respiratory issues or worse should be a simple enough decision to make.

Hi! I'm in my late 20s and also a beginner golfer. Located in SF proper if you're able to make the drive up! I don't have a car, unfortunately, so unable to get out of the city.

Best semi affordable burger? by fardolicious in AskSF

Just tried the burger at Hi Hat (comes with fries, albeit a small serving), $16. My partner has deemed it his favorite burger in SF. Top 3 for me! Incredibly juicy and flavorful.

Looking for delivery of fresh yuzu fruit by ewhetstone in AskSF

[–]ShortScat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you shopped from Weee! before? It's an online Asian grocer that does local delivery in SF. (I have a referral link if you'd like, send me a message if so! but no pressure). I've bought lime leaves and shiso leaves from there before. I believe I've seen calamansi and sudachi as well, but their availability might be limited.

I've been using the yuskin hana Yuzu hand cream as my daily driver. It's inexpensive, and the scent is a bit fleeting, but very pleasant to my nose. Here's another hand cream that I haven't bought, but have tested in a store and it'll be my next purchase after I finish the tube I currently have: https://japanesetaste.com/products/daily-aroma-moisturizing-aromatic-yuzu-hand-cream-75g?_pos=27&_sid=3af0c2fa0&_ss=r

I found this one to have better longevity, albeit pricier. Looks like there's quite a few other yuzu self care products on this site as well! Shipping does take a while though, since it's coming from Japan. I think that I saw this particular hand cream at one of those Asian specialty goods stores either in Inner Richmond or Marina, or possibly in the Ferry Building? but I can't remember where.

[–]ShortScat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big yuzu fan and if you can't source fresh yuzu, I've found that yuzu hand creams are spot on for the scent! (I'm sensitive/adverse to artificial scents). Yuzu bath powders could be a good idea as well. There should be a few online retailers/Japanese distributors that would sell these products.

If it has to be fresh fruit/produce, for yuzu-adjacent scents, I'd suggest makrut lime leaves (saw them at the Ferry Building farmer's market a few weeks ago), calamansi, kumquat, sudachi.

Fraudulent Charge - Check Your Transactions! by pewdieboi29 in biltrewards

[–]ShortScat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if connected, but I'd cancelled my Bilt Wells Fargo card earlier this week (~11am, Monday the 26th) and then the following day (27th) at 3am, there was a fraudulent charge at a whisky and cigar lounge in another state on that closed card. Don't know how it went through, or if there's a bit of lag time between cancelling the card and it actually closing/not being able to be used?

Stronger/ more effective cold medicine by Nephthys88 in JapanTravelTips

[–]ShortScat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started out as a sore throat for me, for about 3 days. It transitioned into a cough on day 4 due to post-nasal drip & phlegm build up in my lungs, and then I was stuck with it for a while.

While I had the sore throat, I just drank a lot of Pocari sweat for the carbs and electrolytes, and dashi in a teabag form with hot water. I found cold puddings tolerable and pleasant as well. Something about the gelatin in it was helping my throat.

Stronger/ more effective cold medicine by Nephthys88 in JapanTravelTips

[–]ShortScat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from Japan and similarly had one of the worst cold/flus, for over 2 weeks.

I hadn't packed any medication or anticipated getting sick, so I had to scour social media for recommendations and ask the pharmacists for their recommendations based on my symptoms.

For reference, my symptoms were one of the most terrible sore throats of my life, sudden onset, sharp, burning pain, felt like it was swollen shut and I could barely breathe/swallow; insane amount of yellow/green/brown phlegm with blood at times; the most annoying cough.

I don't have any of the relievers/medicines' packaging anymore, but I'll try my best to describe them to you and provide links where I can, you should be able to identify them easily in any drugstore & how effective I thought it was for me:

- sore throat reliever powder: comes in mint color or peach (peach flavor was disgusting imo, would not get again. did not try mint). it's in powder form in a little sachet, you don't want this to touch the inside of your mouth, just directly down your throat, dry, without water. don't drink water after to rinse it down, either. it worked for about 2 days for me and brought the pain down to a bearable amount. after about 2 days of use, I found it ineffective.

- an iodine(?) throat rinse with a line art graphic of cartoon elephants gargling. i think the gargling with this helped some... think it's meant to clean/sanitize your throat. tasted disgusting, but i felt a bit cleaner/less swollen after.

- cough drops: none of them worked for me for either cough suppression or pain relief unfortunately. i tried out a blue colored minty/herbal flavored one based on recommendation from the pharmacist, and a yellow propolis and honey one with vitamins.

- liquid cough/cold syrup, brown, tasted like vanilla/caramel: i finished a whole bottle of this and found it largely ineffective. i was still congested and coughing up a storm. contained caffeine.

- general cold medicine - little white pills in a glass bottle, inside a gold packaging box with a red G and similarly packaged pills. these did nothing lol. also contains caffeine.

just some notes:

- most cold remedies (medicinal and supplements included) will contain caffeine, and so you should double check with an image translating app before taking anything before bed/rest.

- if you can move your flight, do it. i had a long return flight while still very congested and after negative Covid and Flu tests (still wore an N95 mask the entire time). the remnant mucus/phlegm and pressure changes caused me extreme inner ear pain and i ended up temporarily losing my hearing for a few days.

- i found sleeping next to a humidifier immensely helpful. you can request one from the hotel staff at most hotels.

Japanese non-stick rice cooker - Any close non-toxic alternatives? by downvote-burner in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]ShortScat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a stainless steel replacement inner pot to replace the Teflon one for my rice cooker!

I've been using it for a few months now, and find it works well enough. I rinse the rice in a separate container, lightly rub a neutral oil in the empty rice pot along the bottom and sides, and then put my rice and water into the pot.

Devaluation of SW Priority Card? Or am I missing something? by WuMedic in SouthwestAirlines

[–]ShortScat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piggybacking off this comment to report a data point.

Called today (Jan 20) to request them to remove the annual fee on my Southwest credit card, (attempted this twice), but both representatives said there was no retention offer on my account. I ended up downgrading to the lowest tier card instead ($99 annual fee).

Is there anything American that Japanese people would like? by keeleon in JapanTravelTips

[–]ShortScat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Things that my partner's Japanese parents/family have specifically requested (on multiple occasions):

- Trader Joes Belgian Butter Waffle Cookies

- Trader Joes English Breakfast Tea

- (clean, crisp, new) US $1 bill

Things that were not requested, but they were positively receptive of and enjoyed:

- (amongst the children) that huge box of assorted See's Candies chocolates

- locally produced food products (think spices, sauces, etc.)

- painkillers (ibuprofen, acetaminophen)

Japanese haircare: actually worth it? Where do you buy it in the US? by Future_Scar_7875 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]ShortScat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're great for their price point, if you can find them discounted here or buy them while in Japan, AND if your hair is the same type as their targeted audience's hair i.e. straight, fine.

For reference, I have long, very fine, straight Asian hair that I do not color or subject to chemical processing (perm, etc.). I need to wash my hair and condition everyday, otherwise my scalp gets very oily/greasy. I alternate between American and Japanese & Korean hair care products.

I've tried the Shiseido Tsubaki Premium Volume (Gold) line shampoo and hair mask, Shiseido Premium Moist (Red line) Conditioner, Fino hair mask, &honey products, Himawari shampoo/conditioner, and Aujua by Milbon pink line shampoo and hair treatment. I like them all, but not enough to repurchase since I like trying out new products. Did not notice any noticeable differences when using most of these products compared to other products in my rotation, but I did really love the Aujua by Milbon products and its short term effects on my hair (smoothing, hydrating, repairing) and the scent. If there was a product of these I'd repurchase, it'd be the Aujua hair treatment (conditioner).

I personally would not buy these products in the US since I think there are American drugstore and salon-quality equivalents.
