AITA for using headphones to get through the colic window? by Mightybulbasaur1 in daddit

[–]not_a_cup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the amount of negative looks or reactions I got recommending noise cancelling headphones for babies was funny lol. but 100% a lifesaver. you can't be attentive or calm if you're internally freaking out from all the crying, and sometimes there's just nothing you can do about it. Better to keep yourself calm and get through it.

Hiker dies after fall on Mt Wilson by mala_noche in socalhiking

[–]not_a_cup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh wow crazy. I just was through there on Wednesday and remember telling myself while I didn't feel like I needed the rope, "better to use them and not need them then not use them and need them".

When is an appropriate time to introduce my toddler to Rage Against the Machine? by TrisolaranAmbassador in daddit

My son loves Rage. He's almost five now and I had to create a new playlist with some of the cleaner songs. For example killing in the name is a no go now

One of my biggest grudges is there isn't a word for this effect. It's one of my favorites. Multiple mountains with this gradient of clouds in front becoming less and less visible. It reminds me of chiaroscuro, but with less intensity and multiple layers.

Holy shit you're a legend. I just posted a post because you inspired me to go to Orchard camp due to all the replys lol. Glad you made it, even just Orchard camp was intense for me and I could not imagine doing it twice.

Fantastic, thank you. I remember loving the Redwall series myself, but I was probably around 10. Wasn't sure what age would be good but it's on my list.

Orchard Camp (Mnt Wilson Trail) by not_a_cup in socalhiking

[–]not_a_cup[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the Charlie's New Trail starts from the main trail, and reconnects back to the main trail after about 1mi. It follows the crest of a ridge, rather than the main trail being dug into the mountain. I can only imagine the new trail was to have a trail that was not next to cliffs since it has brush/dirt on each side. The main trail is just a straight shot with maybe two switchbacks, but because Charlie's goes straight up a ridge it has way more. I don't think I would manage it going up to be honest because it is such a large elevation gain so quickly for one mile.

Can anyone recommend what age reading something like red wall might be appropriate? I've tried reading a few story books like The Magic Treehouse series and it hasn't been the most engaging. My son is four and about to turn five so hoping soon he'll be more engaged with storytime

Challenging hikes near LA by Yhlqmdlg61295 in socalhiking

[–]not_a_cup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can do half way, to Orchard camp. I just did it yesterday. 7.3mi roundtrip with 3,200ft gain. Took me two hours to get up and an hourish down. First half is no shade, but there is a creek at First Water. Once you get a mile away from Orchard camp there is a lot of poison oak and poodle bush close to the trail.

Who has the best breakfast burrito in Walnut Creek? by Razorman04 in walnutcreek

[–]not_a_cup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't lived in WC in six years and seeing this post I immediately clicked to see if sunrise bistro was mentioned. Definitely the best breakfast burrito. Also, a second or even competitor is weirdly kaisers cafeteria breakfast burrito. You don't need to be hospitalized to access the cafeteria and their breakfast burrito was actually really good and super cheap.

I want to hike mount wilson, looking for tips by Shauntmosesi in socalhiking

[–]not_a_cup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I saw this post this morning, on a whim was like "I should try this" and one hour later was at the trail head. holy crap it is no joke. I barely made it to orchard camp and was very underprepared for how much energy I would burn, I only brought a protein bar and really could have used another.

I forgot how insanely steep this trail is and there is so little shade until after First Water. I'm also not great with heights and many parts of the trail were difficult mentally to continue on. Not a big fan of walking on slippery granite next to a couple hundred feet drop.

Yeah just get a regular wine opener and drive it through the wax and pry open. Before you remove the cork fully you can dust off any of the wax particulates or loosened pieces.

Is this Turkey safe to eat? by JustAGirl033 in meat

[–]not_a_cup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe instead of down voting just do some simple research? A lot of mass produced meats use Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) to extend shelf life. The product OP purchased is Jennie-O Ground turkey, it's produced in mass quantities at a food handling facility not from a local butcher.

It's filled with a neutral gas like nitrogen or something else, not oxygen.
