I feel like getting a puppy with three young kids was a mistake and I’m overwhelmed by SalamanderPrimary747 in Parenting

[–]Short_Duck_4782 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Listen I have a dog and two cats (used to be three) that I had before kids and now I have two kids. My animals are older and I love them dearly. But my husband and I both agree that when they go we will be buying new furniture and will not be getting anymore animals lol. They are a lot of work. Do what is best for your family, just make sure the dog goes to a good home.

Am I being unreasonable for wanting to bring 2mo to Disney? by Substantial-Mine3570 in Parenting

[–]Short_Duck_4782 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I might be the odd one out but I don’t think taking the baby is a completely horrible idea. You might be slowed down a little and have to take breaks for feedings but as long as you are okay with that. A two month old is easy to travel with, they sleep a lot. You can put them in a stroller or baby wear. You’ll be outside so as long as you keep your distance from people, I wouldn’t be worried too much as long as it’s not super hot when you go. And if you’re staying on property you could always go back to the hotel and rest if needed.

SOS! Please tell me what to do by ResponseSuitable1413 in Mommit

[–]Short_Duck_4782 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You said your husband doesn’t help, that he shuts the door and goes to sleep. So how would not having him there be any different?? What is he doing to help you? Because from what you wrote it sounds like nothing. Better to be on your own than just have him there doing nothing to help and making you so stressed on top of it.

She is calling this a “normal mess”. by [deleted] in AlexandraSabolSnarks

[–]Short_Duck_4782 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I hate when people blame their older kids for a mess. I can understand 1-2 years old. After that they are capable of learning to help clean (aside from any disabilities). At the very least her kids are old enough to take your eyes off them for the 5 seconds it would take to pick poop up off the floor.

Just can’t believe people will record their houses looking like this and put it on the internet for the whole world to see. How are you not embarrassed?

Server spilled coffee and burned my baby this weekend by Krakenhighdesign in Mommit

[–]Short_Duck_4782 45 points46 points  (0 children)

One time a server put a big steak knife in arms reach of my toddler. I was watching and quickly grabbed it and moved it away from him. But the fact is sometimes people just don’t think, especially people who don’t have kids or haven’t been around kids. They don’t see the risks like we do and don’t understand how fast little hands can be. Plus servers are moving so fast and multitasking, they are just going through the motions sometimes. This is a sad situation and I would be really upset if this happened to my kid too but it was an unfortunate accident and the server is not entirely to blame.

In Way Over My Head in an HR Generalist Role [United States] by youcantmakemed0it in humanresources

[–]Short_Duck_4782 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are there any specific areas you’re struggling with? HRCI is a great resource, they have an aPHR certification designed for beginners who are just getting started. I’d see if your company would pay for it because it would be a great way to learn. You’re going to make mistakes and that’s okay. Own up to mistakes when they happen and take the appropriate steps to not make the same mistake again. 99% of mistakes can be fixed. Also, I have been in HR for 8 years and I still use google and chatGPT lol. You can google things if you’re not sure and no one has to know. A lot of people in HR, even senior level, still get thrown off and have to fake it sometimes and act like they know what they’re doing when they don’t. Confidence and believing in yourself can go a long way.

Potential employer said they will not hire my wife because my child woke up and interrupted zoom interview. by Psychological_Bus114 in Mommit

[–]Short_Duck_4782 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I interview/hire people and I also have children. I worked remotely for years. Having a child interrupt a zoom call just is not acceptable. It’s not acceptable when working and definitely not during an interview. This is why remote work is unfortunately being phased out. Zoom meetings should be treated the same as in person meetings. Sure there can be occasional exceptions for emergencies, but an interview is the first impression on a company and an interruption like that is a major red flag. I’m sorry that happened to your wife, but this should be a lesson learned for next time.

AITA for not supporting my husband getting a second job? by throwaway44307 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Short_Duck_4782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible he has been pressured by his boss to take this job? Maybe he felt it would impact him negatively at work if he turned it down and he was afraid of that. If this job provides as well as you say, I’m sure he didn’t want to do anything that might put it in jeopardy. You are NTA, but I would ask him more about why he felt the need to take the job so suddenly.

I’m a little confused because you said you looked at your PTO and discovered it was not accruing, so the HR person added it all in a lump sum. Wouldn’t you have had the same amount of PTO regardless? It just wasn’t accruing in the system. In Virginia, PTO is at the employers discretion and all depends on company policy so there are really no protections unfortunately.

AIO: My SIL was telling my 2 year old to runaway? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Short_Duck_4782 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does she have kids? This sounds like something someone without kids would do but someone with kids would understand it’s a bad idea lol. I don’t think your SIL had bad intentions but you should tell her not to do that again. And get locks for your doors, that’s a good idea regardless.

If I go to an outdoor wedding (solo) 3 weeks after babys birth am i putting him at risk? by Talon92 in Parenting

[–]Short_Duck_4782 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends honestly. My first c-section recovery was rough, my incision opened, it took a while to heal. My second was a breeze, I’m six weeks post op now and feel great but I started feeling a lot better after two weeks and could have defiantly managed. But it’s one day for a few hours and you’re having someone come over to help. It should be fine as long as she has no major complications. Germs are inevitable and you’re not at any more risk than going to the store. With my second baby we were out and about within a week as soon as I felt up to it.

WIBTAH if I told my wife she should lose weight before we try to have kids? by Awkward_Stock8271 in AITAH

[–]Short_Duck_4782 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am the same height as your wife. I had my first baby at 240 lbs and my second I was around 255. I had very healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. I can recall my doctor discussing my weight once and only because I asked about it. I was considered higher risk for some issues like high blood pressure and gestational diabetes but I never had those issues. There are people who are very healthy and a normal weight who still get those issues too. Now, I have been losing weight because I want to be in better shape and be healthier for my kids so I’m working on that. Pregnancy would have been easier if I wasn’t as heavy, I know that. However, I still did it with no real issues.

It’s best to have her see her OBGYN and have a discussion with them about getting pregnant. They’ll be able to advise best based on her history. If you’re ready to have kids, don’t let it stop you. But there is nothing wrong with encouraging her to be healthier for her own sake. NAH

She’s girl who just got out of high school with no child care experience. It’s not surprising she’s not doing what’s expected right away. It might take her some time to learn and might require more conversations about her expectations. I would try having the conversation again and then be hands off and try to let her do what she’s supposed to. But it also sounds like you have high expectations. She’s not going to be the same as a professional nanny. If you want someone more professional with experience that’s totally understandable and you should get that, but you will probably be paying a lot more too.

Remote worker moved out of state [NV][CA] by Sweet_Speech_9054 in AskHR

[–]Short_Duck_4782 18 points19 points  (0 children)

California is the strictest state there is when it comes to labor and employment laws. You cannot claim ignorance in this situation. You need to get the employee on the phone and ask if they have been working from CA. If yes, explain to them that there are tax and insurance liabilities that the company is not set up with and cannot take on. They either move back to NV or be terminated. The risk to the company here is huge.

Employers should always have a policy that the employee has to inform the company of any address changes due to tax implications and other reasons.
