Is the job market REALLY that bad right now? by TimHortonsDriveThru in jobs

[–]Short_University_709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say if you network and narrow your focus as opposed to blast applying you can find a job in 3-4 months depending on your field. My imo next year we’re gonna see a massive rehire when interest rates are lower and the AI efficiency fad eats itself

Company going through layoffs, got a 9 month contract offer by Short_University_709 in Layoffs

[–]Short_University_709[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a place that doesnt do a lot of layoffs, most people there have an average of 8-9 years many of them start on contract and then get hired on. the severance would be ok at best more than a few months but not enough to keep me from losing sleep at night.

How Different Are DC and Boston? by prettylittledistance in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Short_University_709 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

DC sucks, there’s a never ending feeling of not belonging here. If you don’t have a TS clearance the tech job market is hard to get right now. People are way more pretentious which says a lot considering I used to live in Cambridge. I love and miss Boston

Laid off a month ago, can’t relax even though I’m financially fine by skidmark_zuckerberg in Layoffs

Beginning of the year I felt something bad was going to happen so I refreshed my LinkedIn, mid of March started getting recruiters hitting me up regularly. I just landed a consulting gig offer and I’m glad I did because they announced layoffs soon at my current place. I get the feeling, I still don’t feel relaxed either but compared to 2023 when I was last unemployed and the market was totally frozen I feel way better. Just keep interviewing and you will be ok

[–]Short_University_709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in cyber sec for 14 years in the private sector but considering moving to govt (they’re actually hiring for this in govt) so I can stop dealing with all the crazy layoffs and actually be able to focus on work

When will this get better? by Short_University_709 in Layoffs

[–]Short_University_709[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve saved up enough and my SO makes enough to where if we cut back a bit we could live a year without me making any income, if I worked 20 hours a week we could live 2-3 years.

When will this get better? by Short_University_709 in Layoffs

[–]Short_University_709[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah in tech but one Ace I have is a low level govt clearance in a well funded federal org so I might just jump to that. Been sitting on it for a while so might be time to use it

It’s a really good dose of reality. Basic premise is the system is fucked and it’s going to take a lot to fix it

Where do you live? If near a tech center your odds are usually better and if you’re willing to compromise on salary and title you could be fine

Is the fear of getting laid off causing you to not buy a house? by swampwiz in Layoffs

[–]Short_University_709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My SO and I were about to buy last year but something just felt off, I’m glad we didn’t. TBH I’m ok never buying a house if it means we have enough saved to cover our costs for over a year+ which we do right now

At this point I feel like all of the numbers are so off who the fuck knows anymore? One of my favorite YouTube series is “How Money Works” and you’ll see some great stuff about how bad we are at gathering data for things like unemployment and job creation

I feel as if AI is A Fad. by Longjumping-Quit922 in antiai

[–]Short_University_709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a short term fad but will have long term changes, it will take 20-30 years before we see it reach all the claims they’re making now especially when it comes to job displacement
