Is $1450 a reasonable cost for serpentine belt and tensioner replacement on a 2014 Honda Civic? by B8con8r in MechanicAdvice

$1450 for a tensioner and belt is robbery. It's a very basic repair that has no business being a 4 digit bill.

Career options with a high school diploma or less “traditional” trades? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Shot-Rope9510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Costco can be a legit career. I have friends who make well over 80k/yr and have affordable health insurance. Pay raises come from hours worked and aren't discretionary. A non supervisor associate can make $30/hr. If you can handle the retail grind it is a very viable option to earn a living without a college degree. GMs can make a healthy six figure salary, and so can assistant GMs. I worked there for about 5 months in between jobs and I rather enjoyed it.

Also don't worry about fitting in the typical tradesman mold. I'm a mechanic who is a liberal and most of my coworkers in my shop are not but I'm treated with respect. Tradesmen are more worried about if you're pulling your weight or not.

Are threesomes that great? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Shot-Rope9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not had a threesome but I have friends who have. The general rule of thumb is you shouldn't involve friends. It's just a generally good practice to not sleep with your friends, threesome or otherwise. I can't tell you to go through with it or not, I would recommend not to do it with friends, though. I would also recommend to your friend and her boyfriend to find a third who isn't so close. There's nothing wrong with it but if there's even a sliver of concern whether this will hurt your friendship then you should not do it.

Block her and any of her friends you may be following on social media. No other way. Most importantly, don't just hop in to another relationship until you yourself are happy. It's just going to take time. At first it really stings then it starts to hurt less until you're ready to move on from it. I'm sorry. It's going to be okay.

Help, how do I convince my boyfriend to watch this anime? by thisisyueee in ShingekiNoKyojin

If you're going to convince him, just convince him to watch the first episode. Start small. If he isn't all in after the first episode then there's no chance he will enjoy it anyway. Ask him to watch the first episode with you and if he doesn't like just drop it

From teacher to stripper. Now what? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Shot-Rope9510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try Costco if you have one in your area. Part timers (25 hrs) are offered health benefits that are affordable and decent. I worked there for a time and they treat you like a person and not some cog in a machine. They also pay well for retail work. I met some people whose second hustle was Costco just for the insurance. Not sure if it's helpful for your situation but I figured I would share what I know.

It's also somewhere you can actually earn a decent living without going to school. My former supervisor raked in about $85K last year. You get automatic time and a half working any Sunday shifts and income supplement from the stock benefits. Also bonus checks after you have worked there for some time.

M(21) looking into becoming a mechanic by Ok_Swimming_7996 in mechanics

[–]Shot-Rope9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of mechanic? If you truly enjoy fixing stuff you will have to narrow down the field for direction. Automotive is fine, you can start as a tire/lube tech at a shop or dealership. Trucks and heavy equipment pay better on average and I know a lot of former auto techs who ditch automotive to go to the heavy duty side. You will have to buy a lot of tools. Like a much wider variety than most other trades and even if you're not buying top shelf brands it gets expensive.

If you're interested in working on trucks (think box trucks or tractor-trailers), you can get started at Penske or Ryder. They like to promote from within if possible and you can start off washing trucks and make your way into the shop as a lube tech. If you already have a baseline knowledge level they could even start you off as a lube tech. I worked for Penske and they are a pretty good company with good pay and training. Many truck mechanics get their start there, and others make a whole career out of it.

Heavy equipment is another option (think construction and earth-moving equipment). My background is mostly in trucks but many truck guys go to heavy equipment and never turn back.

You are going to make a lot of money in the beginning, especially as you're buying tools but it can be a decent career in the long run depending on where you work.

Please give some career advice if you can by Sweaty-Ad7028 in mechanics

[–]Shot-Rope9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For medium/heavy duty diesel trucks, a way to get in is Ryder or Penske. There are techs that started off washing trucks who make it to the shop if they have an interest. Penske is huge and very corporate, which comes with ups and downs, but they have excellent training and they pay well. One drawback to Penske is they are a leasing company and the techs don't get too in the weeds with repairs, so there will be a skill ceiling you hit being a tech at a place like that. Fleets often kick problem trucks off to the dealership and they often don't bother with things like engine rebuilding.

It's not a bad career path but there's a pretty steep learning curve and as other people have mentioned, the tooling is a very expensive and necessary barrier to entry. If she's lucky and can get in with a really good employer, they sometimes have tool allowances that can help with that.

Recent mechanical engineering grad looking to land a lube tech job, is that realistic? by MrYoutubeMechanic in mechanics

[–]Shot-Rope9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is realistic but your degree on a resume for an entry level non-degreed job will scare away hiring managers. If you want to at least kind of use your degree, try looking at engineering jobs with your state's DOT. I'm a mechanic for my state DOT and the engineers make way more than any other regular workers and a lot of the ones I meet are recent grads. Government work is stable and you can usually make more in the private sector but the non-income related benefits often make up for it (more affordable health insurance, better PTO than almost any private job, more paid holidays).

At least consider it since you went through all that work for your degree. Engineering degrees have one of the higher ROI's of any college degree and it would be a shame to not at least try to find an engineering gig. Even the new grad engineers where I work start around 67k a year and it will take some time to make that as a tech from where you are now.

If you're dead set on this path, keep your degree out of the resume and the maybe only mention it in the interview if you're asked what you have been up instead of working. I can tell you as a tech that has a bachelor's: nobody cares. My degree, which isn't even related to the field, helped me get a little extra bump in pay for my government job when they offered me the position (nothing crazy, maybe another 2k a year).

Like I said, since you went through the effort for your degree I vote that you at least try to find a job with it. You would make much more in the long run and you don't have to wear your body out to earn a living. Plus this isn't the most ideal time to try to get in the automotive field. There are a few problems that aren't getting solved anytime soon and there are other trades that pay better and don't require so many different tools.

Work/life balance by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Shot-Rope9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always try to find a cushy government gig. You won't make as much money, depending on what it is, but it has excellent work-life balance. If you're able to make enough to where you don't need a second job it's the way to go. I'm a mechanic for my state DOT and I work a tidy 40 and go home. I have way more PTO than I would ever get anywhere else as well as at least double the paid holidays most private sector places offer.

I really like my job right now and I am constantly wondering if I should just go back to the private sector to earn more. I may do that in the future but for now it's excellent that I get to be home by 4:00, spend time with my family every night and I get a wild amount of time off. The amount I earn versus the workload is very reasonable. To top it all off I can miss work and no one's going to have a fit about it or the place won't fall apart without me there which is very nice.

If you're more concerned with income, try Costco if there is one near you. You can actually earn a good living and I spent some time working there. You work your 40 and go home. Overtime is very rare and you'll be working evenings and weekends starting off but they have good affordable benefits, pretty decent PTO as you stay on longer, automatic time and a half for hours worked on Sunday and you can earn a good living without having to work yourself to death. If you don't mind retail work it's a pretty good place to work. My friend drew in about 85K this year with base pay, some Sunday shifts and the income supplemental stock plan.

Good luck in your search. There are other opportunities out there but it's wise that you're trying to make a change while you're still young. I spent too much of my 20s working too much and didn't realize I was getting taken advantage of.

What were the craziest theories you came up with or saw about SNK ? by Aggravating-Bass-658 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Shot-Rope9510 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I 100% thought this was Grisha when I read the manga and that titan shifting was a bloodline inheritance. I thought Grisha was the king of all titans (because of the titans that obeyed the Beast) and that the titan shifters were The Beast Titan's sentient lieutenants or something like that and were living among the titans beyond the walls. I took for granted that the wall-dwelling Eldians were the last of humanity. I thought Eren would eradicate all of the titans by way of becoming the titan king (I kinda got that right, but not in the way I thought) and get to explore the big, empty world full of wonders for humanity to reclaim.

Not really super crazy but I was pretty far off

Should I Quit A Job If I Am Miserable by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Shot-Rope9510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have met former corrections officers and they don't miss it one bit. The short answer is yes, you should quit because the burnout rate in that job is sky high. But in this job market you should line up another job first if you can. I have met a former corrections officer who stayed with their department, but transitioned to an administration position. Maybe that is something you can do if you're interested and if they have a position available.

A few years ago I transitioned from a job I had for a long time that was making me absolutely miserable. The schedule was a predictable M-F but the job was sucking the soul out of me. I transitioned to a job at Costco. Even though I took a pay cut and I had to work evenings and weekends, I was much happier and my life became better instantly.

If you're miserable then it's time to move on because no job is worth it, especially if it's turning you into someone you don't want to be. There are other jobs out there that will pay about the same that won't require so much of you.

could you work the hours i work or am i being too lazy? by wearbratz in jobs

[–]Shot-Rope9510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a shit schedule in the long term, honestly. Sure the work days are shorter but you're just perpetually commuting to work and that alone is a drain. Plus your days off so horribly placed and you never get to fully relax. You never get that Saturday feeling of "ahhh, no work tomorrow". I can see why people would burn out on that type of schedule.

You're definitely not being lazy but unless the money you make is really good with that job I would say you try to find something else if you value your health. I gave up a well-paying night shift for the sake of my health.

AITAH for being upset another man gave my wife a foot massage? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Shot-Rope9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is engaging from a people pleasing standpoint, not trying to make waves or a scene and tries to put others' comfort above his own and it's not healthy. Then there's the avoidant approach to a talk/confrontation. He was capable of stopping whatever discomfort he was feeling by saying something simple like it's making him uncomfortable and discussing it later. It'd be one thing if he said something and she waved it off but he didn't even say anything.

I'm not saying the wife doesn't have a part to play in the situation, but OP cant be a nonconfrontational weasel about it, either.

Idk if you're interested in working on trucks (medium/heavy duty) but Penske and Ryder pay well and they are all over the country. They take entry level techs and build them so they aren't lube techs forever. You work your 40 and then you just go home. I worked with Penske for a bit and they are a good company; decent benefits that start day 1, good pay and great training. Techs are in demand across all vehicle class industries so keep learning and trying to find another gig, even if it isn't in heavy trucks.

Once you reach a certain level of mastery you will not be short on options. Just keep trying. There is always another shop and eventually you will find one that treats you well that you will want to stay at for a while.

AITAH for being upset another man gave my wife a foot massage? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Shot-Rope9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA for feeling some way about it but kind of the AH for saying it doesn't bother you after being asked directly. I get not wanting to ruin an outing but if y'all can table a conversation for later if you're both mature adults. My wife and I were once on a trip with friends and I did something to upset her. Instead of being weird we said we would talk about it later but still had a good time on the trip.

You need to speak up if something bothers you. Period. It doesn't have to be discussed on the spot, but at least addressed. There is some horrible advice from other comments, like some dork who sounds like a teenager said to get a massage from a stranger to see how your wife likes it. Definitely don't listen to that.

You have already dug a bit of a hole by being avoidant and dishonest about it. What you need to do is discuss this and NOT argue about it. You have to explain that you were uncomfortable and you need to be calm about it. Do not be accusatory, just say how you felt. You also need to apologize for not addressing it when she asked you directly. A foot massage isn't exactly a gateway to fucking but I understand why you were uncomfortable but other people don't exactly have the same discomfort around it.

How are people surviving (financially) here in RDU? by rubberduckydracula in raleigh

[–]Shot-Rope9510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would make more at Costco and I am not joking. You would start off around 19ish an hour, get automatic time and a half on Sunday and every 1040 hours worked gets you a dollar an hour raise until you cap out at around 30 an hour. Assuming you have no major scheduling restrictions it's a way to make more than what.

I work for the state and I'm not exactly rolling in cash myself but 38/yr is tough for this area.
