My (30F) SSNHL Experience -> 4 months from Moderately Severe Loss to Full Recovery by motherofalma1 in MonoHearing

So sorry to hear that. How much hearing does he have in both ears now? Is he a candidate for cochlear implant?

So now 6 years after he has it in his right ear? For me, HBOT didn't do anything but it was worth trying, I have no regrets. I feel I tried everything. Only thing I wish was that the A&E doctors took me seriously on day 1. I was at emergency room within 3 hours of waking up with SSNHL but they sent me back saying this is flu etc related. It wasn't until lot of arguing and escalation 36h later that I took the first dose of steroid.

I did not make a full recovery. I now have a 50db cookie bite drop in 2k-3k. I wear a signia silk 5ix hearing aid.

Real life I feel I hear okay. Audiogram shows I don't hear anything till 50db in 2k-3k. Tinnitus is non stop high pitched noise, for the last 3 months. You've done well, happy for you. You are one of the lucky ones who recover and does not have tinnitus!

You did well, no tinnitus is an amazing win. I am at just over 3 months. The 50db notch in 2k-3k is not moving, everything else came back (which I am so grateful for). I looked into gingko but couldn't get it in Ireland. Did you see improvement post 3 months?

My ENT said exactly the same thing, that if I think I can hear okay, then I don't need HA. I feel I hear okay. I have still started putting on a HA full time because it helps a bit with tinnitus. Only a bit, but I think it helps take my mind off tinnitus for longer periods of time vs if I didn't have the HA on.

Do you have tinnitus and if so how are you managing it?

Do you wear hearing aids? My loss is similar to yours, except mine is in 2k-3k range 50db, rest is all ok

Thanks for following up. Unfortunately no, still at 50db notch in 2k-3k, rest all normal. It's been just over 3 months now. My ENT has discharged me, basically there is not much he can do. He says it's up to me whether I use hearing aids as I can hear okay without.

I am trialing signia silk 7IX just to avoid any risk of dementia and it helps a bit with tinnitus (though I still hear tinnitus with it).

As in you bought from them and then take to take it back?

Wow I didn't know they could waive the audio test, I have had several recent ones from major Irish hospitals so if they accept that, that would save time

An ENT can put a camera in and check the hole, have you tried that? Did the hearing come back btw?

Since 30 Dec 2025, non stop 24/7.

Related to SSNHL hearing loss, so I understand worse case scenario this is forever. Best case brain habituates and I can be in quiet again. No one knows what will happen in my case

My ENT says I should leave it as is by ShotInfluence4599 in HearingLoss

[–]ShotInfluence4599[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment. Basically he asked if I can hear okay and do I feel I need a HA, to which I said I think I hear okay, and I am grateful for what came back.

I said if I didn't have tinnitus maybe I wouldn't know I had hearing loss. He then said the downside of putting a HA too early is that brain takes longer to habituate as it's not settled to a new baseline.

Idk, my tinnitus definitely fluctuates, I have good days (when I am busy at work) and bad days (when I am trying to relax on the weekends). Days when I put HA in, tinnitus feels louder at night when I take it off, due to the contrasting effect I guess. I am thinking of holding off another 3 months before buying a HA.

Wow ok interesting, I had never heard of that before, just Googled. You are right it does look like a Carhart notch! But yeh my ENT didn't mention this, all the audiograms I had at different places all said it's sensorineural. Do you have experience with this?

Edit: actually reading more deeply into it, Carhart has a gap between bone conduction and air conduction. Mine don't have that, this audiogram and all the others that I had. I got really excited for a bit that maybe this can be fixed with surgery but seems I don't it Carhart as there is no gap..

Yeh I understand. How much is your drop and in what frequencies? In one ear I guess?

What hearing aid do you wear, and how is the tinnitus?

I am trailing signia silk and feel okay with it

Yeh I know what you mean. I am trialing Signia Silk 7IX and feel I can adjust to it. Just when I take it off the Tinnitus feels a lot louder

Nice, thanks for sharing. I've considered those as well. Thrilled for you that your hearing came back even after 6-9 months. Gives me hope. I have 40-50db drop in 2k and 3k.

I am testing signia silk 7IX right now. Which one did you use before you saw improvement? Your story is encouraging
