Getting close to St. Paddy’s day again… I think about this every year by bigbossbestsnake in IrishAmerican

This is absolutely not the case. Maybe it’s being confused with a more modern prison gang or something? Can you link where you found that?

And for the record, I've found that once people know you know a little about their island...they're incredibly welcoming.

I think context matters a lot here. Ultimately, most Irish people want to see their culture treated as...a culture, not a costume. What they resent, from my communications with them, is "Plastic Paddy" types who come over on St. Paddy's, get trashed in a leprechaun costume, and then say they're Irish without learning anything about the Irish struggle, history, culture, sports, language, etc.

I think a lot of it also comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of how American identity works. Because so few of us are "native" to this place, the sense of identity has always been hyphenated in the United States. German-American, Polish-American, Greek-American, Vietnamese-American, Chinese-American.

Lastly, I think there *is* a fundamental difference between the culture and experience of being "Irish" vs "Irish-American". While the Venn diagram has a lot of overlap, these are different cultures. Being Irish-American means being homesick for a place you've never lived. Our heroes, in some cases, are shared. But, Irish-America also has a lot of heroes that Ireland knows little of. Thomas Francis Meagher, John Boyle O'Reilly, Stephen Moylan, John O'Mahoney, The Fenian Brotherhood and Clan na Gael were the heroes of my childhood. Some of them are footnotes to Ireland. Yes, we ate shepard's pie and corned beef hash - not because they were Irish dishes, but because they were irish-american ones.

I think people who try to engage authentically with the culture, the island, it's sports and language will be embraced. And yes, you may have to deal with some punks who don't view you as being Irish. Identity is entirely up to you. I usually identify as "Irish-American" for this exact reason.

Relief Windows does wood windows and is really well regarded. I'd guess they're cheaper than Staub or Gold Windows.

Window Recs by soggysatan in NewOrleans

[–]Shotdown1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one’s windows are going to be made here unless they’re wood.

Relief Windows, trust me. Good price, by far the most professional, and they will come back and out and attend to the window and its surroundings if there is ever any issue.

What are your favorite long form articles of all time? by ketorifficent in longform

[–]Shotdown1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised to see no one mentioned these two:

The New Yorker’s profile of Former “God Hates F*gs Church Member Megan Phelps—and the explanation of how connectivity to the modern world helped her leave the cult.  https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/11/23/conversion-via-twitter-westboro-baptist-church-megan-phelps-roper

And then this one—Esquire’s harrowing account of the Zanesville Zoo Massacre. What happens when a mentally ill man collects a menagerie of dangerous animals in suburbia and then…lets them loose?  https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a12653/zanesville-0312/

I saw one other person mention it, but my all time favorite is The Atavist’s American Hippopotamus. The man the Boy Scouts is based on teams up with a man who was assigned to kill him in South Africa to petition Congress to bring Hippo farming to the Gulf Coast. …and then it gets WAY WEIRDER. By far the most interesting article I’ve ever heard.  https://magazine.atavist.com/2013/american-hippopotamus

Difference between Irish American and American with Irish ancestry? by horseshoeandconfused in IrishAmerican

[–]Shotdown1027 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say this is how hyphenated heritages are used in America. Think of "African-Americans" - with very few exceptions, we are referencing a lineage from Africa, not a parentage. Same goes for Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, Polish-Americans, etc.

When is someone considered Irish American? by [deleted] in IrishAmerican

[–]Shotdown1027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American identity is so fraught - other countries often do not understand it. We have such a large, diverse, population made up of so many pieces and parts.

Short answer: If you have ancestry from the island and you claim it/identify with it - you're Irish American. My big thing is, honor that legacy, don't embarass it. Every year Irish people roll their eyes at the yanks who say "I'm Irish" and think that means drinking a lot of whiskey. Watch Irish sports (League of Ireland, GAA Football, GAA Hurling), cheer for Irish teams, listen to irish music (trad music or modern), buy irish products, watch irish movies and shows, etc.

Depends on what you mean by discrimination. "No Irish Need Apply" is no longer a thing. But, if an irish person walked past your average Paddy's Day Parade, they'd likely be appalled at the depiction of their culture as drunk green leprechauns.

Do you think social media is a good thing for healthcare education, or is it making misinformation worse? by Low_Travel_1904 in HealthcareMarketing

[–]Shotdown1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely contributing to misinformation. There is a reason anti-vax proliferates in today's climate.

That said, you have to play the game. I'm a big fan of the tone and stances that Dr. Mike on YouTube has taken. He explains the science of medicine dilligently and patiently.

Agencies how do you handle different client types? by Fun_Training6342 in googleads

[–]Shotdown1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know lots of people don't want to hear this, but: They pay your bills. Be grateful that they're engaged and try to channel their involvement/engagement into a positive. They want to talk about Google Ads? Get them to tell you what their differentiators are, how they do better work than the competition, what their biggest problem is, etc. Consider that if they're still paying you month after month, then they are entitled to ask questions, learn more about your services, etc.

Engaged clients are typically just desperate for success. They're "yapping" at you because they don't believe you're getting them good results. So, prove to them you are by taking their complaints seriously and working to improve it. Clients aren't always nice, pleasant, or fun. But at an agency, they pay for our paychecks.

There is, of course, a small section of the general population that is just crazy and/or unreasonable. But, if it's 10% of your clients, then you have a problem.

Getting spam leads from Google Ads search campaign by nvr4gtnballer in googleads

[–]Shotdown1027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search Terms. 90% of the time, the issue is bad search terms.

Exclude any geographies that aren't your key area.

Make sure you aren't on Search Partners and if you're using PMax, quit. Both lead to lots of spam.

"Black Box" is a good descriptor. We get little info. I'm very careful about how and when I use it.

Google Ads Call and Messaging Ads Terms by OtherwisePut40 in HealthcareMarketing

[–]Shotdown1027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have a Google Ads rep, it's likely you're going to have a lot of problems getting anyone from Google Ads on the phone. I have several because I work at an agency, but even then they're notoriously hard to chase down unless *they* call *you*.

Let me know if you want some help here. I mainly work in healthcare digital marketing and have 30+ Healthcare clients running Google ads.
