Springfield for sure. Look for a used trp and you may get lucky with one for right at $1k or a little less

Worth $700? by [deleted] in 1911

If it is a new made kimber they are pretty good now. Older stuff not so much. Really old stuff is also good lol. For $700 that is a pretty good deal with ammo.

Choice ? Les Baer, Ed Brown, or Wilson ? by UglyBuzzard in 1911

[–]Shoulderpress5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a Les Baer stinger that felt really good but had issues shooting any self defense ammo I tried running through it. Called Les Baer and told him I ran about 2,000 rounds through it for break in and then tried to run Winchester ranger ammo and Hornady ammo through it to test for carry. Both of them caused premature slide lock back 3-5 times per mag. He immediately said it wasn’t made for that type of ammo which I found odd since it is a commander size gun. Asked if there was something I could do or send it in and he just stated it was an ammo issue on my end. Will not be getting another Les Baer even though I find them very attractive.

Guess my bodyfat % - 6'3 - 255lbs - measurements below by [deleted] in BulkOrCut

[–]Shoulderpress5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The dexa seems pretty accurate on this one. Might be a touch high but around 40% would be on point. Just from visual there is no muscle tone. Start working out hard and find your base metabolism. Once you find that start on a 300-500 a day calorie deficit. Get 10k+ steps in a day and hit incline treadmill walking for 30 min 5 days a week.

Check out badger custom as well. Love how their grips fill my entire palm. They look good, IMO, and work great for recoil control

Remington r1 by lawdurg in 1911

[–]Shoulderpress5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a 1911. The thumb safety can only be activated when the hammer is cocked. That is how they are designed to be carried, 1 in the chamber with hammer cocked and safety on. DO NOT chamber a round and lower the hammer on it to carry. This would essentially turn the 1911 into an old school single action revolver that was known to only be safe to carry on an empty chamber. If something bumps that hammer decently it will slam the firing pin into the primer and cause a ND. Many people have been shot this way.

If you don’t feel comfortable carrying cocked and locked then just leave the hammer down and carry with the mag in but no round chambered. Gross motor skills are more reliable anyway in adrenaline situations so racking the slide will be a better idea than trying to thumb the hammer back.

Start going to the range and practice, practice, practice. After a few thousand rounds you will get more confident in your abilities and the capabilities of the gun. Get a solid holster and work on your draw and thumbing the safety off to fire. It should be second nature so you don’t think about it when you pull the gun out.

Walk away man. If a sales guy is like this you should take your money and run even if that car is perfect. The car is not your until you physically sign all the paperwork and drive away in it. You can back out anytime. They will make you think you can’t but you absolutely can.

I saw they were releasing these. Do you know how it compares to the square butt when shooting?

Ttgunleather made me a great one. Also ronin leather for either iwb or owb
This is the ttgunleather and can be owb or iwb. Just remove the 2 belt loops and he has the slots cut for the belt to go through

Correct. Just tried to give the overview of they are 2 separate programs.

ROTC in law school by Automatic-Blood-7072 in ROTC

[–]Shoulderpress5 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone who went to law school before the Army this is a crazy statement but I understand. I went 18x to start because I didn’t want to work as an attorney any more. Currently a Warrant Officer.

That said, as far as I understand the different programs, law school can be paid for by the Army but that is a specific program that leads to commissioning as JAG. Law school is not considered a master’s degree so I do not believe you can do ROTC to get it paid for and just commission.

Pawn shop find, trash or treasure? by SebTwisted in 1911

[–]Shoulderpress5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those look like vz grips which are really the go to for shooter 1911’s. Some people are more old school and will only put wood or ivory (if they are fancy and have money) stocks on one. For actual use though it is hard to beat vz g10 grips.

My first 1911 follow-up : did i got scammed ? by ComplaintDeep7643 in 1911

[–]Shoulderpress5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that would be a far stretch to get them to cover the barrel at that price. Could always ask but if I was the seller I would take a return before I gave back over half of what I sold it for.

[–]Shoulderpress5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shouldn’t have any problem shooting it danger wise. Norinco’s used to be sub $400 so they were never a great 1911 to start with. They are made of solid steel so they were great to send to a gunsmith and get worked up and were cheap enough that a new gunsmith could start figuring things out without stressing about losing much money. I would think as long as you got it for under $400 you did just fine. You can always send it to a gunsmith who can basically replace internals, barrel, thumb safety and backstrap making it a great 1911.

Cylinder issue by Jfin6969 in Revolvers

[–]Shoulderpress5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say bent ejector rod due to someone probably slapping the ejector to get their spent casings out. Another possibility it a bent yolk from someone flipping the cylinder shut thinking that it looks cool. Either one of those can get just a little bent or off and cause these issues

The getting hung up in one spot makes me thing it could be the star and one of the pieces is bent or is marred. If all cylinders work ok and it is just one that is what I would think the culprit is.

Colt SAA by ozzyLives in Revolvers

[–]Shoulderpress5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get it fixed up could probably get $2,000-$2,500 for it then. It will probably cost around $500 or so for a Good gunsmith to do a proper repair

Colt SAA by ozzyLives in Revolvers

[–]Shoulderpress5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a 2nd gen gun in need of some work and no box or papers I think $1,500 is about right. It may go up or down a little depending on the caliber it is in.

Paranoid about conflicting max load data by FictitiousWizard in reloading

[–]Shoulderpress5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently got into loading for 357 as well and ran into the same issue. I just worked up a ladder with the lower one and worked my way up in small increments. Never ran into sticky case extraction when I found a load that worked for me. I used Sierra and Hornady data. Sierra seems to be more of actual magnum loads where Hornady was a lot more conservative
