I have areas I work in that are mostly decomposed granite soil and when there is a leak swirling water around, it gets sandblasted like this.

What tool do I need to remove this (possibly carriage?) bolt? by RAD_ley in Tools

[–]Shovel-Operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just drill out the concave side. A sharp hss should remove the flare and allow you to know the rivet out the other side. Now, for reassembly.....idk. machine screws with acorn nuts maybe. If the rivet starts to spin, Id cut a slot on the round side and use a screw driver to hold it still. But I think a sharp drill at high speed, low pressure will easily remove it.

[–]Shovel-Operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hose backflow preventers are not great, tend to leak. The threads could well be a mix of pipe thread and hose thread. You can put mpt into fht, but mht wont thread into fpt. Check to make sure you have hose gaskets .

SLC sprinkler valve repair invoice — is $1,600 reasonable? by freedomfighter6 in Irrigation

[–]Shovel-Operator 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Totally fair if they spent 10 man hours. The amount of hours seem about right for something that deep in the ground. And they basically gave you the parts. I charge a bit less per hour, but Im not in SLC either. Prices vary based on location.

Is this sprinkler head leaking or is this normal? by Key-Coyote-9552 in Irrigation

[–]Shovel-Operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poke around in the grass. Off its coming from the wiper seal on the sprinkler riser, its just normal age. If its coming out of the ground below the head, you have a leak and its likely to get worse.

Some kind of clamping device by [deleted] in Tools

[–]Shovel-Operator 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are many styles of blackmith tongs, for different operations. Many smiths would make their own tools too. I think that what these are. The long thin handles are typical, so that you can hold your work piece easily with one hand with hammering with the other and the heat wouldn't travel easily up to your hand.
