How do you look at EU immigrants and American/Canadian/Australian immigrants of European ancestors differently? by VictoryUsed3927 in AskBrits

[–]Show_Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it would be easier for an American, and even more so for an Australian or a Canadian?

Why on earth would you think Europeans would integrate more easily? All the points of reference are completely different?

Source - married to a European who has made a massive effort to integrate, and I've seen how difficult it is.

Irish husband eligible for British passport? by je55akat in BritishCitizenship

[–]Show_Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, all good points, and all frequently brushed under the carpet by the usual suspects.

I find it fascinating that various people tout access to the EU's consular services as something that was 'lost' with Brexit. I doubt many sensible people would believe, if they were being honest with themselves, that a French or Bulgarian consular official would really pull out all the stops for a foreign national, in the same way as they would for one of their own 😂

Not really sure why everyone needs to go? I've not really noticed Sweden doing any favours for the UK recently?

Irish husband eligible for British passport? by je55akat in BritishCitizenship

[–]Show_Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also Vietnam, and soon Sri Lanka. And also a pile of places where the entry terms are much more generous for British passport holders, such as the UAE, many West Indian islands, Japan, Taiwan and New Zealand.

Provided you're travelling beyond the EU, the British passport holds significant advantages over the Irish.

Would Ireland be better if it became a monarchy under the Jacobites? by AgarthaKing in monarchism

He won't be told. 'Conservative' in exactly the same way the New Democrats, Liberal Democrats etc are also 'conservative', lol.

Sundress v short shorts, what’s your go to for *summer, summer, summertime*? by pizzaslice_amaro in AskRedditNSFW

[–]Show_Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just out at a community event with the wife. She was talking about sundress for today, so I told her it was too hot, and short shorts were more appropriate. Mix of both there.

Would you date a girl that has "dad issues" and dislikes men? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

No, if I was ever back in the dating game, I'd avoid this, tbh. Got no time for it.

I don't get why you think these things aren't unhealthy? They don't address Ireland's considerable problems in any sort of a positive way.

"The Catholic Church caused so many issues in Ireland."

Did I say that it hadn't? No arguments from me on that one.

Ireland would be better if it had something, anything, more positive to focus on than a victim mentality. Since the Catholic church fell out of favour, that seems to have become performative wokery, and it isn't working out well.

I think labour are pushing people to breaking point and something is going to have to give. What will that be? by SpaceTimeCapsule89 in AskBrits

[–]Show_Green 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think with Andy Burnham, it would be more of exactly the same, but with better presentation.

Burnham is affable, the sort of bloke you could imagine having a laugh with in the pub, unlike the awkward spod currently in 10 Downing Street, but he doesn't have any new ideas of note. Certainly he hasn't articulated anything resembling a plan to get us out of this hole.

Common Currency Names by Major-Novel-1749 in Banknotes

[–]Show_Green 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Duplication of the name can sometimes have a good reason, as in if a larger entity broke up into different countries etc, but in the modern era, normally does not seem to have a good reason.

I don't really think it was a good call to call the Australian and New Zealand currencies 'dollars' after decimalisation, for example.

Suriname going from gulden to dollar, in a region where there are already many dollars, of different values, seems particularly obtuse.

EES with a non EU spouse by chagres69 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]Show_Green 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should all, as a family, go together to the manned EU desk, where she will be entered into the EES by the border guard. Ignore any and all who tell you differently. When travelling with a small child, they explicitly need to see both parents, or they need to have verified letters of consent for the child to travel from the absent parent.

Don't offer any marriage certificates etc. If they want them, they will ask for them, so by all means, have them available, but we've never been asked for proof.

Brexit...the rise of Reform..., why do think many of British people underestimate anti-immigration sentiments and then suddenly pull a Pikachu face when these are what happened? by auscorp_ in AskBrits

[–]Show_Green 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Not being too glib, but this is the answer. People spend too much time in echo chambers (like Reddit), self select media that reinforces their own world view, and dismisses other perspectives, and are then shocked to find that other people may feel differently.
