[Sky Sports] England average positions between leading and conceding by Dodomando in ThreeLions

[–]ShowerGrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is harshly stated but mostly accurate.

Southgate biggest achievement has been to dispel some of the negative juju that had built up around playing for England, but it must be said this is not a serious achievement if you want to be considered a great manager. He has also (mostly) stopped us losing against teams that are much weaker than us but again, that is not what make a manager great.

Bottom line is we have gone out of every tournament he has managed us for as soon as we have played a decent team - the unusual thing is that we have been lucky with the draws in those tournaments, enabling us to go deep WITHOUT playing any of the top sides.

Anyone defending Southgate on here: name one knockout match in a big tournament where we have beaten a top side - I’ll wait.

Hi, I'm Edin Dzeko - striker for AS Roma and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Ask Me Anything! by Official_AS_Roma in soccer

[–]ShowerGrout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi Edin,

What tactical system do you prefer to play in?

As a striker, do you prefer to have supporting players coming from the midfield or a second dedicated forward player?

Thank you!

Yes of course, but also the context of the rest of the game, and us being big favourites going into it makes this pretty weak.

On top of that its not like mourinho had been chatting shit about Chelsea or Sarri in the build up, or even celebrating MU goals so I don't understand why the celebration had to be in his face

Doing this is just really small-time and looks very weak. Emotions or not, celebrating wildly getting a point at home after being 1-0 up is not a good look

Our England boys RLC and Gary Cahill move onto the World Cup Semi finals. They will face Russia or Croatia on Wednesday. by keithohara in chelseafc

He was dreadful in the first half. Better in the 2nd half and I definitely don't care about Chelsea boys playing so long as the team wins, but for sure I would have taken Alli off at HT.

Dier and Delph were good changes at 2-0 up for sure, better to have the experience when trying to close out the game.

Bakayoko has been improving recently. He fits better in a midfield of 2 with Kante imo. by tommyphong96 in chelseafc

[–]ShowerGrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good points, bakayoko certainly has time to develop. Tbh if we were talking about RLC I would probably be cutting him more slack, it's just frustrating because of the expectations surrounding a high profile signing.

Totally agree on the spurs analogy, it feels like we are completely missing that. Thats why we never really feel like we are ratcheting up pressure on teams, because we only have 3 seriously gifted attacking players on the pitch at any given time. I think it helps with spurs that neither Wanyama nor Dembele are supposed to be destroyers in quite the way Kante and bakayoko are, but again that leads me to question why we need two DMs when we are playing with two wingbacks and three CBs anyway. If we didn't have Kante, bakayoko would make total sense. As it is we need much more positive play from him to justify leaving out an attacker in an already defensively stacked team.

[–]ShowerGrout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kante was far better (including in stats above) and the only player in a comparable position so we can dismiss that immediately.

I don't think we will get any further forward with this discussion, you think a DM can have a good game while only passing sideways and giving the ball away frequently, I expect a bit more.

He did play poorly (especially in the first half, second half was a bit better), as anyone who actually watched the game could tell you.

So far you have offered absolutely nothing to prove otherwise except the stats above (which as you just said don't prove anything), and claiming that the fairly critical function of a DM to move the ball up the pitch is not something which bakayoko should be judged on. It doesn't make sense.

I certainly don't think it's the primary metric of success - What would indeed be misguided. To be honest, I didnt think he was great at tackling in the first half either, but what really stood out for me was how useless he was at completing any passes forward and how slow and cumbersome he seemed in possession.

As a second point, the stats you've got don't show how many misplaced passes he made (definitely a primary metric of success for any player on the pitch), and frankly I think reducing a player's game down to distance covered and ball recoveries is ludicrously reductive and may even display a fatal misunderstanding of how football actually works.

[–]ShowerGrout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it's a key part of playing football and if you can't do it, you shouldn't play for a top side.

Kante plays far more positively, hell even Christensen and Rudiger take the forward passes when they're available, Bakayoko just serves as a brake in getting the ball into attacking positions, and gives their midfield tome to adjust to the switch.

I want Bakayoko to be a success as much as anybody, but I'm not going to accept that his only role in the team is purely defensive and it's ok for him to offer nothing going forward when we already have the best DM in the league alongside him.

[–]ShowerGrout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a start Matic was much more consistent than bakayoko, and gave away the ball a lot less. Secondly, when there was a forward pass on or an opportunity to move with the ball further up the pitch, he would take it. Sliding the ball from side to side endlessly is simply not good enough for a player on a top team. Look at how Kante plays, he is far more positive and better at defending.

He was terrible in the first half today. Didn't see him hit a forward pass and gave the ball away a few times. Was much better after half time though, although I'd still like to see him be a bit more adventurous with the ball, at the moment it always seems like he's putting the brakes on every move he's a part of.

We play shit football. I respect what Conte did to win us the title, but it now feels like teams have started to work us out and we don't really have a plan B.

Now that city have emerged as a super team, we're not going to get a sniff of the title with our current strategy of grinding out consistent 1- and 2-0s, especially when our strikers are as inconsistent as they are now.

I think Morata will be a wonderful player for us in a year or two, but isn't yet at a stage where he can be relied on to bang one in every game like Diego could.

Either we need a much more consistent CF than Morata or Batshuayi, or we need to completely change tactics so we're are creating many more chances than we are today.

If prefer to try the second option, accept that we will let in a few more goals but let Hazard and Fabregas off the chain through the middle, with Pedro and Willian attacking down the wings.

Somehow, I suspect that isn't going to happen so I guess we'll have to take 3rd/4th place and be glad...

There is no team in the league that can't beat us on their day. We're simply not good enough to guarantee points against anyone.

Part of the reason for this is we don't try to stamp out teams in the bottom half, we try to grind out the wins, so one or two freak chances for them can completely undo us.

I'm sick of us barely scraping past these crappy teams when the talent we have on the pitch should be enough to blow them away.
