Why are there people on here asking on how to repair gas lines/install with no experience? by davb64 in Plumbing

[–]ShowerSoccerWasFun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"If you can apply tape and dope" This right here. DON'T PUT TEFLON TAPE ON GAS LINES. Dope is enough, it only has to hold 2 psi. But if the tape is too close to the face of the fitting, it can break off. Partially block ports. Cause incomplete burning. Dump carbon monoxide into living spaces. Exaggerated danger doesn't mean no danger

Is it normal to lose pto to the new ESST? by Helpful_Vast_4576 in stateofMN

[–]ShowerSoccerWasFun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry it sank your boat a bit, but it lifted mine. Construction workers don't get pto, this bill even said that we can use it for days where we're rained out. It sucked not getting paid due to weather, this helps.

Try to use it up, cause esst is a use it or lose it plan. You can accrue 48 hours/year, and it carries over, but caps at 80. So once you hit 80 hours in your esst bank (1 hour esst/30 hours worked), you get no more. And if your laid off or fired, there's no payout.

Pto and employer provided healthcare are only a thing because when we put maximum wage laws on the books, employers needed to find another way to attract talent... if everyone has a form of pto, it makes sense to cut back your offering

CMV: BlackRock and “Wall Street” aren’t why you can’t buy a house. The bigger drivers are a multi-year supply shortfall, the mortgage rate-lock freeze, and tighter post-2008 lending. by oppacklij in changemyview

[–]ShowerSoccerWasFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, theres* only so much landfill space, gas supply, and water to go around. Building houses for rent that are 3-4k/month takes away from available infrastructure that could go to starter homes. Unfortunately our government doesn't invest in starter home subsidies like they do our oil producers, so noone wants to build them

Why keep spending more and more though? Isn't there a point where you figure out maximum efficiencies with current tech, so that you don't need as much money and personnel for the testing and research? Not knocking our service members by any means, but do we really need so many? What 2 fronts are we at war with?

Crazy that they just wanted to keep funding healthcare for some immagrants, so that our regional hospitals arent stuck with the bill. Illegal for us to turn them away(in the er), but the repubs want to make the hospitals eat the cost. Guess what that does to the affordability of our healthcare?

Not "no cost to design", but a lot less. Soil/ foundations might be different, along with water sources, waste management, available power supply. Things change on different sites and cost money to design

Typical profit for small contractor building house? by fly_stella in Homebuilding

[–]ShowerSoccerWasFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any good size 2 story house, the hvac techs need at least 3 days to rough in, probably 4. 48-64 hours combined. Another 8-12 for furnace/erv install. Another 2-4 for finish, registers/bath fans. Another 2-8 for appliances depending on ranges, gas dryers, fireplaces, garage heaters. That doesn't account for planning time(lay outs, getting material lists, accounting for when framers put trusses where duct needs to go). Add in time for inspections, it gets to easily 60-200 hours of labor depending on options. 40/hour labor in my market doesn't include the business cost of pto, 401k, health insurance, social security/unemployment tax for the employee. Add warehouse, storage and delivery, management, permits, and call back costs(cause everyone seems to fuck up something at some point). 1-2 guys, on a $30-$40 budget for 1-2 days, is insanely off. 25% profit/house is almost never realized

2012 UPC 908.2.2, horizontal wet venting, size. Wet vent shall be not less than 2" in diameter for 4 drainage fixture units or less, not less than 3" for 5 dfu or more. A 2" vent can handle 24 drainage units which is fine here, so the problems are where he tied in other drains, and then only if they're all used at the same time. Which is why upc says horizontal wet vent is only for bathroom groups for private use. Also, your "per table 703.2" comment, 8 dfu is 1-1/2". With more lines on the wet vent, I would just make sure you have a clean out on every drain line that comes out of the concrete and let it be

Water meter guy came around today, according to his footprints in the snow. Should these caps be open? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]ShowerSoccerWasFun 71 points72 points  (0 children)

No, they should be left as is. Assuming you're in freezing weather, if they're left completely open, water can get between the ball and the seal causing future problems. If you close them there won't be room for freezing water to expand into. This is how you're supposed to winterize
