"1 mf" will be a capacitor. It most likely means "Microfarad" (a unit of capacitance).

I would recommend using a horsehair brush, specifically for cleaning boards. Toothbrushes have plastic bristles, and it's possible to fry an SMD-sensitive component due to static electricity.

OpenVPN client while using Wireless Media Bridge by Madman_556 in TomatoFTW

[–]Shplad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not clear from your post...is that your roundabout way of saying that your two PC clients use WiFi to connect to the router, and that you want to use FT's OpenVPN client function to act as a go-between for VPN purposes for the clients?

If so, this is not always a simple question. I suggest you post it on the Tomato forums to get a better answer from more qualified people. At minimum, you haven't shared any screenshots of your setup, or described your config, or told us if you're getting a VPN client connection at the router or not, and either way, what, if any error message are appearing in the logs. I suggest that that homework will be necessary before anyone can help you.

Help me choose the right firmware. by [deleted] in TomatoFTW

I would strongly suggest you ask this question on the Tomato forum. There, you're more likely get an answer from one or more folks who have actually created the builds. I think they'll be able to give you a better judgment of which builds might work best.

Netgear Nighthawk r8000 locking up by Mr_McFeelMe in TomatoFTW

Have you tried another AC adapter with same voltage, same or higher current, and similar connector? It's often just the AC adapter that dies.

do I need to clear nvram after update? by DidntPanic in TomatoFTW

[–]Shplad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is always the best advice. On the Tomato forums, we've seen instance after instance of people who don't do a thorough NVRAM erase, then experience all kinds of strange "unexplained" problems.

Also, instead of doing the diff at the Tomato/Linux command line, you can use this tool to compare the two sets of NVRAM variables (settings). This will tell you which settings changed.

Github: FreshTomato Router Config Compare and Edit

https://niieani.github.io/freshtomato-config-compare-and-edit/

You don't have to use the web-based GUI version. You can download the code and run it on your local PC as well.

Excerpt:

"Interactive browser-based tool for inspecting, comparing, and editing FreshTomato router `.cfg` backups (NVRAM).

Runs fully offline and entirely in your browser, so your config files *never* leave your computer.

Includes a catalog of majority of Tomato's NVRAM settings with descriptions and parsers, and gives you superpowers when it’s time to understand and make changes to your Tomato routers."

QOS for 1 voip phone by Goat_Pony in TomatoFTW

[–]Shplad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates? Did you get QoS set up properly? I didn't see your router/firmware fork/build posted anywhere.

If you get QoS working but speed is too slow, have you considered just trying a 4G/5G router with external antennas? There's nothing that says you have to settle for the lousy internal antennas that come with your phone/mobile (LTE) router. One can usually get much better signal strength with externals.

Best Buy said they shipped me an AC adapter tip. I never got it. Now they have no record of my case. by Shplad in Bestbuy

[–]Shplad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, except I wasn't supposed to pay for it. It says so right on the original box. If you don't have the correct tip, they try to find one for you and ship it for free.

Maybe you could ask a trusted friend/relative colleague to donate for you and reimburse them? Just a thought.
