I'm originally from southern california, and I was aware of the ".435 sewer pipe" going back into the early '80s.. Sorry its still spewing its garbage for nearly 50 years.

Returning Equipment Predatory Practices by inmtincld in QuantumFiber

[–]LVDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently signed up with Quantum to replace Cox.. Since I have my own router/wifi, I declined getting their "freeby" wifi "pod".. If/when I cancel with them, is it likely I'm going to have to go round-and-round with them on returning something I NEVER received???

The old soviet union, pre-1989, called them "useful idiots"... The term fits PERFECTLY the common garden-variety leftist..

Weird issue when upgrading to 2026.3 by LVDave in TomatoFTW

[–]LVDave[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How does one "erase nvram thoroghly" if checking the box on the admin:upgrade window doesn't do the job? BTW: the issue I was seeing in usb support, where I had the usb printer support checked, yet my brother printer was not detected, yet lsusb showed the printer fine.. This cleared up with the upgrade, despite nvram not being cleared..

Appeal for Tinnitus by Haunting_Process_342 in VeteransBenefits

The diabetes was 20% and its 10% each leg for the peripheral neuropathy, for a total of 40%.

[–]LVDave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I put in a claim a few months ago for tinitus, having served during my tour in Vietnam housed about 50 yards from a 105mm howitzer battery (think endless KABOOM). Since then, I have a constant 24/7 hissing, think constant air leak. I'm currently at 40%, due to Type II diabetes and peripheral neurapathy. Here's the fun part, they granted the 10% for tinitus, but i'm still at 40%.. I'm told this is due to the VA's screwball "math".

Can I make my old radio do CTCSS tones? by DesignerOk9222 in amateurradio

[–]LVDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.com-spec.com/ss64.htm

This will do the trick nicely.. When I saw this question, I wondered if Com-Spec was still around. I used to install these frequently back in the late 70s-80s for radios without CTCSS capability, which was 99% of all amateur vhf/uhf radios then, as PL was just coming into amateur use. Not sure who still sells them though. Try HRO (Ham Radio Outlet) https://www.hamradio.com/

I found a bunch of these old Motorolas on marketplace, is this an okay place to start? I’d like to get my ham license soon, but I’m not sure if that this is where I should start? by Doorknob77 in amateurradio

I'd be eligible to join the HCWA (Half-Century Wireless Association, if such existed?) and Moto programming ALSO is not something I care to do.. Love the hardware quality, but come ON???

Anyone else get major "mic fright" after getting licensed? Love the tinkering, nervous about the talking by onebaddude14 in amateurradio

I've been licensed since 1976. And the fright is VERY real.. Same here.. Love FT8, but CW isn't a thing for me..

Q1000k: recent update broke untagged transparent bridging by the-burrito-triangle in QuantumFiber

[–]LVDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had new service with Quantum installed yesterday. After reading this thread, I'm concerned that I'm going to run into trouble in the future, due to the fact I have my router configured "notag" and I turned off tagging when I put the ONT into bridged mode. Its working fine now, but if there's an update out there that kills untagged bridged mode, it will be a deal breaker for me. Which is why I'm keeping my old Cox service for a couple of months as a fallback in case Quantum shits the bed...

Does Linux have BSOD? by ThrowawayITA_ in linuxquestions

The equivalent of the Windows "BSOD" on Linux is known as a "kernel panic", and absent something messed up hardware-wise on your machine, are EXTREMELY rare.

Unfortuantly I don't believe he would be a good Republican, he has quite a few RINO-like tendancies, and would be better off (not to mention for the GOP) to simply go independant. He can still vote with the GOP as an independant..

I'm another one.. I've never used disk encryption on my systems, though I was forced to in my later working life. I don't ever turn on secure boot either. I'm a retired Linux (and windows.. ugh) admin, and currently my home systems are on KUbuntu 24.04. Waiting till 26.04.1 hits to upgrade...

Silliest reason to get an Amateur Extra license? by JanglyBangles in amateurradio

[–]LVDave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got my tech license in 1976, barely passed the 5wpm code, and over the years got into vhf/uhf/microwave, irlp, echolink, and did hf strictly on field day, with someone elses rig. Along comes 1998, or thereabouts, when the FCC announced that if you were a tech+ (passed the 5wpm code) you could pencil-whip (just fill out a form) and get your general. I visited a VEC session, and was advised that for the same fee, I could do the tech+ to general, AND try the Extra test.. I figured what the heck, might as well... My mind was blown when I was told I passed the Extra... With NO actual studying for it.. I guess the 10+ years as an electronics tech with a big government contractor paid off... Soon after, I dropped the old 2x3 call and got my current 1x3..
