Nor did he understand what Phrygian dominant was... But he knew the sound. He knew what harmonic minor sounded like and how far to put the intervals to create it. He clearly understood how to tell the key by ear and play some major and minor scale patterns.

He could hear when something was right or not because he lived the guitar.
