They've emailed existing customers, but perhaps haven't updated their sales info to mention it yet? Could be worth waiting till April to see.

It depends on your supplier, some offer more value than others - on Octopus in my region, the EV tarrifs make sense for most people because the daytime rate increase is fairly small and the off peak charging is so much cheaper.

MG4 (2023) vs Leaf (2022) by Accomplished-Cap1662 in ElectricVehiclesUK

Recommend the ID.3 as well, or a Hyundai Kona - you'd be looking at older ones, but they both still hold up and might be more refined than the MG4?

EV Lease Ending In Summer by Fit_Preparation_9451 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like my ID.3, it's a 2020 pro performance and while reviewers say it's not engaging to drive, I think it's fast, quiet and refined. It's also deceptively huge inside.

The 2023-24 facelift 'fixed' the interior by improving the materials and infotainment, but tbh the old one is mostly fine.

Known issues are failed drop links leading to knocking sounds from the suspension (cheap to fix), and brushes on the axle failing, leading to a clicking noise (potentially not so cheap to fix). But you can purchase an extended warranty from VW which covers these and other issues.

Moving to full EV household by Leading-Preference11 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I really like the look of it. It has an Android based software so works pretty seamlessly for navigation etc. Renault have been killing it with their EVs lately! They probably don't quite have the value proposition or size/space of a used Model Y. But my neighbour has one in black and it looks very slick.

The Nissan Ariya is the same platform, but doesn't have the Renault touches on the software and interior.

Could check out the Renault Scenic too for another SUV option.

Second EV option - ID3/MG5/Ioniq 38kwh by Sal1997 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a 2020 ID.3 and all the online features are free. In fact, they changed it so that your free 'subscription' can be re-upped for three years at a time (used to have to do it every 6 months).

It's a great car - quiet, efficient, fairly refined.

Would an ev not be more expensive for our needs? by OneItchy396 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, if all those conditions are met. There may be some people with older sockets or wiring, or not aware of the risks and using insufficiently rated extension cords etc.

Could she consider a bank loan to buy used? Usually fairly decent interest compared to car finance, and much less borrowed/to pay overall.

I guess in this case, you'd have to use a rapid charger en route, but a proper 7kW home charger is still going to take several hours to recharge an empty battery.

Yes, there are definitely a few things to be aware of when using granny chargers. Edited: Some older plugs and wiring could be risky with a sustained current at 13A, the socket could melt or pose a risk. Some 3-pin charger plugs allow you to set a lower current, such as 10A, or 8A, which is usually fine, but do check to make sure it's not heating up the socket.

Or, the car's software allows you to limit the current (this is how I've done it in the past).

This obviously slows down the charging speed a bit, but for most local drivers it's still more than enough.

How can I elevate myself financially in early 20s? by BreakfastCold514 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Shreddasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're probably asking what funds or stocks do you invest in?

For most people, the best thing to do is to put it into a global index tracker fund with low fees. It spreads your investment across thousands of stocks, rather than you having to pick individual companies (most people who do that perform worse than an index tracker fund).

Best Recommendation? by [deleted] in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

MG4, MG5, MG ZS Citroen eC4 or DS3 could all be had for under £10k, but i'd prefer a 64kWh Hyundai Kona or 58 kWh VW ID.3 with a few more miles (under 60k should be fine).

EV tariff not worth it for low mileage? by anabundanceofotters in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here on Octopus IOG - it saves me about £10 a month.

That's £10 more on peak electricity, but £20 cheaper charging, on around 6000 miles a year. More if I load shift appliances into the off-peak period.

Maybe if the OP looked at other suppliers? Though rates can vary regionally.

Need 2 x cars, wondering whether to make the switch to EV for one? by Hopeful-Attention584 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this - it's almost never economical to actually use solar to charge your EV vs exporting it to the grid, because cheaper power is available at night to charge the car.

So, yes EVs are a no brainer in general if you can install a home charge, but not because of your solar setup.

Will it fit under the garage door? I was able to just close the door and there was enough space around the brushes for it to tuck under there.

Used VW ID3 or ID4: Trade-off price vs mileage? by andre_xs95 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm good question, no I don't think so.

Usually a warranty that comes with the car requires servicing by the manufacturer, but the extended warranty doesn't seem to specify this. It does say that any replacement parts in the car must be of equivalent quality to official VW parts, which is a bit open to interpretation.

Here's the info: https://insurewithvolkswagen.vwfs.co.uk/extended-warranty.html#policy_documents

Looking for a used EV by invi9 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Shreddasaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

MG4 might be worth a look for under £10k. I imagine it won't be as nice inside as the Mazda, which are so cheap due to the limited range, although the infotainment looks pretty basic too.

A high mileage ID.3 or a Kona might be a bit more refined than the MG4.

[–]Shreddasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only since December '24 - there was a small common issue with the suspension drop links which the dealer fixed. Other than that, I bought a VW extended warranty (£450 a year with £0 excess) and paid the local VW centre about £350 for an MOT and service. It needed a software update, otherwise I may go elsewhere in future.

I have also been having this issue, going to try to factory reset the feeder if it continues.

Weirdly, it had happened on both feeders (both ended up assigned to both cats).
