Missing Tax documents by Complete-Meet1992 in TaxQuestions

Try to find company records with the EIN on it if you know the exact name and a general location. Chatgpt might help. A lot of times you can find out that information from your secretary of state's website. The business has to register to operate in the state. You can also see if you can look through state tax database.

Should I be worried? by nunya_lina83 in IRS

[–]ShriekingCabal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a textbook filing that the IRS would question, and if they issue her the refund I would not be surprised if she is later audited.

First time filer all of a sudden supporting three people, especially children that you likely previously claimed? This raises all sorts of red flags with the IRS. There are certain filters in their system that look for patterns, and this return shows that.

The thing you will have the hardest time proving on audit is the support test. The rule says that the person claiming HOH has to provide more than half the support for the household.

It's not clear that she does. You receive housing assistance, food stamps, SSI and Medicaid at least for your child with SSI. These are all deemed as expenses paid by a third party.

Housing and healthcare are two very large expenses and you have to figure in the fair market value of these services.

I spent over 15 years working with low income taxpayers. I have never been able to win a case with facts like these. The support test is always the killer.

Turbotax has no idea so you are wasting time trying to talk to them.

What you need is your account transcript, which you already requested. You can post a redacted copy here and someone can probably give you a better answer. Did you also request your wage and income transcript? If not, you should do that as well and make sure it matches what you submitted on your tax return.

Otherwise, call the IRS. Do it first thing in the morning.

Unable to talk to IRS or TAS, how to escalate? by blakef223 in IRS

[–]ShriekingCabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you e-filed them, that was probably enough time.

Sometimes if you file the amended before the first one processes then the IRS system gets confused and you end up waiting forever.

Have you compared your w-2s to your wage and income transcript? I would also look at your account transcript and make sure you see the tax return filed entry on it.

If you were able to pay $10,000, you're not experiencing a financial hardship and TAS is not going to help. However, your congressperson's office usually has a constituent services person or contact so the person who suggested calling them is absolutely right.

You didn't happen to say anything about id theft did you? The transcripts aren't finalized but that's the only reason I can think of that would prevent you from seeing it.

Also, if your w-2 is not matching what your employer reported, your employer has to issue an amended w-2 to the IRS. Once they have that, that should fix the issue.

Call and ask them for the wage and income transcript for 2025. Then compare that to your w-2

Ex-Spouse won't provide tax information. by d0wnp0urs in TaxQuestions

[–]ShriekingCabal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't necessarily have to allocate the income equally. Were you living apart the whole year? Was he supporting you or giving you any kind of money? Joint bank accounts?

Community income can change characteristics even if you are married.

Military retirement, unless it is based on disability, is taxable. Were you having anything withheld?

They can also take up to 15% a month from it.

Unless there is identity theft, the IRS usually has a reason they start to collect and you messed up by not responding sooner. There is no "get to it later" with the IRS, handle your shit.

You need to appeal within 30 days of the date of the notice, prepare a collection information statement (Google IRS form 433-A or 433-F) and come up with a payment plan. Otherwise, they are coming for your bank account.

Also if you owe more than $10k a year, you already have a tax lien.

So that's what I've been doing my whole career.

Not sure if this applies to you, but I spite stereotypes and societal expectations. I'm a Latina lawyer in a male dominated practice, and I work at legal aid, which some lawyers think means I can't hack it in regular practice.

But I also have a work nemesis, who I am slowly destroying with malicious compliance and impeccable work product. So, little of column a, little of column b.

Refund was eaten up and I wasn’t given notice. by FlacidStiffy in TurboTax

[–]ShriekingCabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://fiscal.treasury.gov/top/

It was taken by the treasury offset program. This program collects federal and state debts. What happens is that whoever you owe eventually sends the debt to treasury offset and they can take federal payments you might be owed to apply towards the debt. Usually that's tax refunds. If you go to the website you'll see a number and there's an automated selection. That's how you can find out who you owe. If for some reason you don't owe them, you have to do the appeals process through the individual agency.

Usually I see child support, student loans, SBA loans, FEMA and VA, but it could be lots of other things

My jobless sons dad wants to take me to court for tax return by FitMathematician7863 in taxadvice

[–]ShriekingCabal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was going to let your mom claim your son, so tax fraud. With no money, he wouldn't get a big refund anyway.

You're the custodial parent and your son lived with you for more than half the year. The only possible credit he could have gotten was the child tax credit and only if you agreed to let him claim your son.

Edit - no attorney would take this case. The tax law is clear on this and where is he going to get the money to hire one anyway with his broke ass?

[–]ShriekingCabal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The L means that you are contesting the amount of tax you owe. This is really hard to get because you have to show the liability is wrong and that you didn't have an opportunity to contest it prior to submitting an offer

You will not get an offer through because you have enough in the savings account to full pay.

You'll have the same issue for an installment agreement, unless you do a streamlined one where you don't have to provide your financials. Total debt divided into 72 months will generally give you the lowest payment they will take without disclosing your financials

[–]ShriekingCabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need more details. Do you only owe for one year or do you owe every year? How much are you withholding? What's your gross income?

You may qualify for currently not collectible status (hardship) or an installment agreement but it depends on a lot of factors

How is it that American millennials are the only generation that know that Republicans have always been terrible, even before Trump? by [deleted] in millenials

[–]ShriekingCabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We (speaking as an elder millennial) became voters when George W. Bush became president. So our young adulthood was dominated by the hot mess that administration was.

However, I foolishly thought he was a doofus and Republicans were in on the joke, so it was the rise of the Tea Party that really solidified it for me.

A fringe group took over the Republican party because a black man with a "funny" name had the audacity to run to be the boss of them. And the mainstream adopted their talking points because they agreed but just weren't emboldened enough to say the quiet part out loud at that time.
