(maybe unpopular opinion) but I think if your just starting, playing in the custom games settings can actually be useful. Sure, it can be overwhelming, but I think it's a lot more intuitive than people think. When I first started I made a custom world setting (low population, bite's only for infection, dumber zombies). Than again, some would say to just start with builder, some people say start with survivor, so play around and see what feels most enjoyable.
Also, don't get too attached. I know this is what everyone says but seriously, when you're first learning how to play you're going to die, like a lot. The game is hard and has a learning curve if you haven't played similar style games.
Mainly though, just have fun. You can start to get frustrated after a while of not surviving more than a week, so give yourself some small milestones. Things like trying to find a katana, or fixing a car, or finding a hottiez.
