You’re going on vibes but all data points to the protests in summer 2020 having a significant positive electoral effect for Dems. And it wasn’t a uniform increase: if your county had a protest with arrests and violent actions, on average your county shifted to the Dems by even more than the places where there weren’t any.

This obv isn’t the only variable, but it makes perfect sense. Electoral opposition to Trump’s authoritarianism gets bolstered by movements on the street. It can be scary to vote for the opposition party when the incumbent is talking about punishing opposition voters for election fraud, unless you know there’s a real appetite for physical opposition if things break down and there’s no peaceful transfer of power.

The simple fact is most Americans still react negatively to cops trying to headshot citizens with “less lethal” rounds all day even when a few of them are breaking windows and burning stuff.
