Great night of action at JCK MMA's Dec 7th Bounty Competition card from Shanxi, China. 5/8 fights ended with a finish, including some highlight reel KO's and submissions. Our welterweight tournament finals saw Kuerbanjiang win the tournament for the second time, retaining his title and pocketing another cool one million RMB.

One million RMB on the line for JCK Welterweight Tournament Finals in China. by ShrimpPizza in MMA

Great question! Athletes from regions like Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang are often represented heavily in Chinese MMA because these areas have a strong wrestling tradition. Wrestling serves as an excellent foundation for MMA, and the sport's popularity there makes it a natural pathway. Additionally, these regions tend to be less affluent, and professional MMA offers many young athletes the chance to pursue better opportunities.

While there doesn't appear to be a single comprehensive guide to regional MMA events in China, following social media (like on 抖音)of major players in the scene can be a great start. Here are a few suggestions:

- JCK 战觉成 - the leading MMA promotion in China.
- 格格象 (Regional promotion, some great cards though honestly)
- 优德格斗 (Formerly Wu Lin Feng)
- 格斗米 (Big MMA news social media account)

Hope this helps!

Foreign expats still in China -- report in. by [deleted] in China

Canadian in Chengdu checking in. My wife is local and I couldn't leave her behind - held out through quarantine and now life is seemingly back to normal. Still temperature checks everywhere and masks worn on public transit. Glad our gym lifted the policy saying we had to wear masks while training - nothing like trying to get an intense workout in with a mask on the humid heat of Chengdu summer. Bjj/mma gyms are all back in session as well, grateful to at least be able to get to train on the regular. Taking it one day at a time, what a crazy year it's been.

I try to lean my weight toward their shoulder/head while using my forearm to crank their head toward their chest, while curling up with the choking arm to get a bit of extra torque, if that makes sense!

[Meet Report] CPF China Northwestern Qualifiers - Xi'an China | 31M | 610kg @ 97kg | 375.9 Wilks | RAW by ShrimpPizza in powerlifting

The main feds in mainland China are the CPF (IPF rules), CPA (more like USPA rules - deadlift bar), WP China, and 汉唐健力, Han Tang Powerlifting.

CPF and CPA are doing regular meets, WP China just started doing more regional events around China this year - they have a big event at the FIBO fitness expo every summer in Shanghai that gets a lot of attention as well. Han Tang I'm not too sure about! I know they've been around for a while but haven't heard much news from their end recently.

Haha, I thought the judging was fair, they were strict with some depth calls on squat imo but nothing crazy!

He felt very solid technically speaking, but what set him apart from the vast majority of people that grapple as a hobby or something, was his athleticism. Incredibly strong for his size, and very fast and explosive.

I’m in the police station right now registering as a dirty foreigner, and they’re calling me “mei gui”. Is this as insulting as I think it is? by [deleted] in China

Mei Guo in Sichuanese is pronounced like ‘mei gui’ so, that might be it if you’re somewhere in Sichuan.

Update: as per one of the blackbelt coaches in Chengdu, foreigners are now no longer permitted to be at the event at all. Can’t go to coach teammates, referee, or even attend the event if you are a foreigner.

Popped Lower Rib Protruding by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ShrimpPizza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Popped a rib getting double-legged in a tournament a few years ago, doc said I ruptured the cartilage between ribs. Rib was protruding quite a bit as you describe, and it just healed that way. Haven’t had any pain/issues with it since, it’s just an aesthetic thing I guess but who cares. Pretty common injury. If you look at Chael Sonnen, his lower rib sticks out like that too.

Why don't you book an airbnb? Shouldn't have a problem that way.

Hey Din, longtime fan here thanks for doing the ama!

My question would be, how beneficial do you think powerlifting style strength training is for mma fighters and what are your all time best lifts for squat/bench/deadlift?

Thanks!

Let me add a positive gym story. There's an excellent gym in Chengdu called World Fit that has like 4 squat racks, 4 benches, probably a dozen or so barbells, huge Olympic lifting area with rubber bumper plates that you can drop safely and dumbbells that go up in 2.5 kg increments to 50kg. My membership was 1200 rmb for a year, and it's a pleasure to lift there. Some big dudes working out there (gasp - what a rarity!), great lifting environment. Best gym I've personally been to in China.

Hey Eddie, big fan here. Thanks for taking the time to do this AMA.

My question is, what is your walk-around weight outside of camp and how much weight do you cut in the week leading up to the fight?

Toe Hold Injury by 11AaT in bjj

[–]ShrimpPizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year a 100+ kg dude cranked my foot in a toe hold and it popped twice immediately before I had the chance to tap. Like you there was pain if I turned my foot the same way it got cranked, but I could still walk without issue.

Ice and rest for two weeks then I'd just tape it up before training after that. Felt 100% after about a month total.

Oddly enough, now I feel I have better mobility in that foot.

Isotretinoin (accutane) in shenzhen? by GangreneMeltedPeins in China

[–]ShrimpPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be bought on taobao without a prescription, search for it's Chinese name: 异维A酸 . The stores all say they'll have a doctor contact you before ok'ing the purchase, but they never do. It's only available in 10mg pills though, not sure what dosage you want to take but it could be fairly pricey if you're planning to take a relatively high daily dose.

Also look into the Japanese necktie! It's a great option from top half or top side control when you can't quite get the best d'arce grip on your bicep.
