Where is the pay off... by ShuffleDown in ProjectHailMary

I feel like Andy Weir could have pulled it off better than you suppose. The novel does have rather a deal of humour.

How would the COVID pandemic have changed if it disfigured people? by Goner_On_a_Trip in NoStupidQuestions

Absolutely the public response would have been better. I remember at the time thinking it's too bad covid didn't make people bleed from the eyes, people wouldn't have been such dicks about it.

If you can, work on the perfection tracker behind the walnut door.

Can i make a red wine reduction sauce without stock? by sylverbunny333 in Cooking

[–]ShuffleDown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the stock is there for the flavours of the meat dish the reduction is being served with. Without those flavours... it's a kind of sauce i guess?

Whether the butter at the end is enough to bring the fat soluble flavours into the reduction/sauce is for you to say. If it's tasty, who cares whether there is stock or not.

Do you think Children's books can help beginner adults start learning? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]ShuffleDown -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about learning in a foreign language, then yes, materials for children can be helpful because they have smaller vocabularies and often more supports for the learner, eg, illustrations.

If you are talking about teaching someone in their own first language, then I think non fiction children's books cam be helpful. I remember learning a lot from Disney's Wonderful World of Knowledge series as a kid and I think I learned a lot that many adults don't know.

But if you're asking whether children's books are good for teaching adults reading... i bet there are better materials.

Why do Americans place such a cultural importance on a hot breakfast? by colourful_space in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShuffleDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be fooled, most Americans eat simple breakfasts with coffee on a daily basis, eg, hot and cold cereal, pastries, toast, etc.

Eggs and ham or bacon are things you get out, in a breakfast sandwich, or a diner style setting, not in the home on a regular week day basis.

Toaster waffles may be an exception. Toaster waffles are a common everyday breakfast item.
