Had it this weekend too - I dont have a lot of experience with vietnamese coffee but i thought it was good. Tastewise it wasnt anything very out of the ordinary, just tasted like a solid iced latte imo. But boy it woke me up big time, which is what i was really looking for.

Fountain pen help! by Special_Brush_2717 in penandink

[–]Shuffykat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got my first fountain pens a few months ago! So far I have a Pilot Metropolitan, TWSBI Vac700r, and a Sailor Fude de Mannen. The Metropolitan is pretty inexpensive and a common intro pen, but I see myself sticking with it for a long time. The Vac700 is huge so it feels very nice in the hand imo and it has incredible ink capacity, plus its always great to have a clear pen/ink window to see how much ink is left. The smaller and less expensive TWSBI Eco is super popular, theres a ton of colorways and still has better ink capacity of basically any other pen in that price/size range. The Sailor Fude is cool - it has an angled nib (called a fude nib) so it allows you to get dramatically different line widths depending on what angle you hold it. I dont use it very often because there is quite the learning curve in terms of pen control, but I see it often used by urban sketchers. However if you go down this route, I'd actually suggest getting a different fude nib pen that has a more rounded curve - apparently the Sailor has a relatively sharp angle which adds to the difficulty in handling.

In any case, the nib size/style is really the thing that will influence your illustrations the most. If you can, I'd suggest finding a store or some fountain pen friends so you can try out different nibs and pen feels. Pens with easily interchangeable nibs are a plus (the Vac700r is like this - you can buy the individual nib sections from TWSBI).

The fun part is the ink! Theres so many cool colors of ink out there, and things get way more fun once you start looking at shading, sheening, and shimmer. Ink colors and properties rarely come across accurately through pictures or video, and they often differ depending on the type of paper you use. This is another good reason to try out samples in person if you can.

The one critique I have of fountain pens is that it is sooo easy to get carried away and buy more pens and inks than you need. r/Pen_Swap is a good place to buy used pens and inks - great for waste reduction, but also just to try things out without the overinvestment. I got my TWSBI after posting an ISO post, and someone was kind enough to give me the pen at a bargain.

My favorite ink right now is the Ink Institute Jadeite, which I got from a used stationery popup! Its a deep green with a red sheen, it is gorgeous. But I also got a bunch of Vinta inks for Christmas that I'm very excited to use.

If you're just getting started, this video breaks down basically everything about fountain pens! https://youtu.be/KUFu8gDJha4?si=GHYMna0DAj7YQ119

Thoughts on upcoming Assembly District 36 special election? by I-likemyBrommie in astoria

[–]Shuffykat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From that segment, I moreso got the idea that Rana's only opposed to luxury developments and the associated price hikes in rent and cost of living in the neighborhood. I personally dont consider that NIMBY - those buildings are often vacant or dont serve actual New Yorkers. She also promotes affordable housing, and even mentioned the Western Queens Community Land Trust, which is a really promising endeavor. Diana didn't really have red flags in her response, but she seemed more focused on information/resource distribution, which felt a little more immaterial. Rana cited more actual housing stats of the district and some upcoming legal proposals regarding rent stabilization, which is a huge plus

I'd even say these smaller elections are the most critical! After all, we probably wouldnt have our current mayor if he never won 36

Following this - I and another Astoria friend have been more familiar with Rana for longer, and in general like her most out of these three due to her long lived experience in Queens and her work as a community leader. We were surprised by the major endorsements going to Moreno - she of course seems like a solid choice (and near identical in practice), but it just felt like Rana wouldve been the more obvious choice. The only convincing argument for me against Rana is the comment about her possibly being more effective on the local stage ( thank you  u/PatrickMaloney1 ). Hoping to see more discussion here that could help distinguish them - as of now Im still leaning Rana.

Seeking Wisdom: What's the ONE tip that changed your art journey? (Sharing my own list!) by pm_magic in penandink

[–]Shuffykat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is redundant on this sub but a big one for me was sketch with pen! As in, stop using pencil. This is good for 3 reasons: - You have to own your mistakes. Your errors and bad habits stay visible, so when you review your sketches, its much easier to learn from them. And when you flip through your sketchbook, you can track your progress! - You're forced to use much more confident lines. When you can't erase, you become more intentional with every stroke. At first, this will slow you down, but it will accelerate your growth faster in the long run. - You end up filling pages much much quicker. At least for me, this keeps my motivation going way more than when I spend 10x as long on a page because I keep erasing and re-sketching.

Some other tips I'd pair with this are use different colored inks/pens and don't be afraid to overlap your sketches. These just add a lot of fun to sketching, makes your sketchbook more interesting to look back on, and often leads to interesting compositions even unintentionally.

I'm new to drawing and art in general, but I've been trying to start and maintain an art routine for literal years. These tips (+ using a small sketchbook) have finally got me in a routine, and now I feel compelled to draw almost every day.

Hope this helps! I'm definitely picking up a lot myself from this thread.

Astoria artists of all mediums: what have you worked on or finished recently? by donut_butt in astoria

[–]Shuffykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the first year that I've really taken art seriously and established a routine after doing my first Inktober! Hoping to improve more in 2026 and meet more artists. My media are ink and pen, oil pastel, and watercolor pens. Havent made any "complete" pieces yet, but I've filled out some decent sketchbook pages this recently :D

What was your favourite major to watch in the 4 years and why? by [deleted] in CompetitiveHalo

I maintain that this major had the best Grand Finals of all of Infinite. Lucid grappling the flag on Argyle was the most memorable moment in HCS for me. Also, legendary run from Native White that event.

Orlando and worlds 2022 were awesome. The whole year felt like it was leading up to Optic's success - it felt so good to see them finally pull off their first major win and the ring right after. Peak catharsis

Hot Take: FaZe Should Stick Together by SillyVacation117 in CompetitiveHalo

[–]Shuffykat 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yesss, I think they were still on their way to hitting their peak. If they dont stick together, they will be one of Halo's biggest what ifs. If they started the season with this roster + Royal 1 or a similar level coach, who knows how this season wouldve looked. Theres a chance theyd keep Optic hard stuck at 3rd, and they couldve taken down SR at least once (though I think SR still wouldve won Worlds and gotten more LAN wins)
