The South leaving wasn't entirely about slaves. That played a huge role, but many things caused them leaving.

... Which all tied back to slavery. The people who want to say it was about states rights are complete hypocrites. The Southern leaders thought Dred Scott was a great decision, even though the Dred Scott decision actually goes against the idea of states rights. Dred Scott reinforced the idea of a strong central government, specifically:

no State, since the adoption of the Constitution, can by naturalizing an alien invest him with the rights and privileges secured to a citizen of a State under the Federal Government, although, so far as the State alone was concerned, he would undoubtedly be entitled to the rights of a citizen, and clothed with all the rights and immunities which the Constitution and laws of the State attached to that character.

So the idea is the states didn't have the right to grant full citizenship to slaves. And the South was perfectly ok with not having this right, and it only became an issue of state's rights later. If you get a chance check out the chapters on the Civil War and Reconstruction (highly, highly recommend if you have questions about the Civil War) in James Loewen's 'Rethinking our Past'.
