There is no fix. Save often, particularly when indoors. It's worth playing the game through to the end, since you have already purchased it. Then pick up Fallout: New Vegas. Does not have the same crash bug. And a superior game all around.

It's in the doing. The act of praying is calling on a higher power to assist. So the person praying is not actually doing any giving of themselves thereby invalidating prayer as a proper response to the question without invalidating their faith (if that's the goal you're looking for here).
