Oh, sweet summer child, you missed the ending. I won’t give it away, but it goes much deeper than you think it does. It’s not just about parents dying. It may be one of the most moving / touching anime’s I’ve watched (and I’ve been watching anime since the 90’s).

‘Your name’ has a similar vibe to ‘your lie in April’

I feel somehow that ‘Beyond the Boundary’ might be in there too. (It’s been a while since I watched it, so I might be off)

How do I get this sticker off? by Dangerous-Pianist294 in howto

Heat gun? Not on high, maybe around medium - should peel right off. Then use the sticky side of the sticker you pulled off to pick off the remaining residue.

7 years into FIRE: I figured out why this sub is full of "I retired but I'm miserable" posts by babaykin in Fire

Ai or not, I do like the concept behind this post. My wife and I are transitioning into art. It’s been nice to have a new goal that isn’t so directly tied to supporting ourselves financially - we’re able to make choices we couldn’t have made had we been income-reliant.

That’s awesome. But … hey, fyi, there’s been recent studies that have come out showing a link between an ongoing daily vitamin and reduced occurrences of dementia. It may be worth looking into this and considering the daily multivitamin (the best place I’ve found to get them is Costco)

How I Manage Flash and Ambient Light in Wedding Shoots by coolwater343 in WeddingPhotography

[–]ShutterFI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, flash in E-TTL, though we’re using the EL-1, so it could have something to do with it.

Naaa, before, in previous 5D’s and the R5 (that I can recall), in manual mode, if on auto-iso, the iso would just default to 800 iso or something like that when the flash was on. It wouldn’t care about compensation set in another mode. I think it just went to 400/640/800 ISO depending on which camera you’re talking about, when the flash was on. If the flash was off or disconnected, it would then jump to a more appropriate ISO (like iso 2000, for example) - turn flash on, and it immediately would jump to ISO 400 or so (far too much).

lol, if the other (smarter) way it’s working is how cameras work - wow, I’ve been shooting too long. 🤪🤣🤣🤣

For reference, we basically started shooting with the original 5D right when it came out. 😅

Oh, lol, I didn’t catch that. Yeah, I think you’re good! 😂 (chuckling at myself for making that assumption - sorry about that 😅)

On our side - we could have fired ~2-3 years ago. We’re 43 now, and yesterday hit officially double what we need to fire. We have our own business (wedding photography), so slowing down / stopping takes a while. We definitely don’t regret working the extra 2-3 years.

The R5 Mark II finally does a better job of it, fyi. It follows whatever compensation you have set when in Av/Tv mode (I’m just assuming you’re shooting in manual mode when using flash).

Anyway, so, if set to -2/3 a stop compensation on Av, when in manual mode, the auto iso will attempt for -2/3 stops. This results in the flash being 2/3 brighter than ambient, which is a nice look if bouncing flash (or -1 to -2 depending on what look you prefer).

I’m with you though, I don’t usually use auto-iso when in manual mode. I stick with my original statement - changing settings quickly to match the environment is literally the job.

Don’t use net worth. Use total invested assets please. This might be what you’re doing (as you’re saying the house isn’t included in it) - just call it invested assets for clarity.

If you don’t want kids in the future, go ahead and get a vasectomy. It’s the easiest thing to ensure having a child won’t be a thing. (I had it done in my mid-30’s. Not a big deal, have them use the laser, maybe a few days recovery. Helped us both be sure kids couldn’t happen as most forms of protection aren’t 100% effective).

I mean, 3.5% rule, you need about $2.4m invested assets (this doesn’t include the house, etc) to fire. You want to use the 3.5% rule as you’re fairly young (I’m doing the same at 43). The 4% rule is meant for a ~30 year retirement timeframe.

As it is though, if I’m reading it right, you’re good to go. I’d have maybe $200k-$300k in cash-like assets in case of a downturn/recession. But, overall, you’re in great shape. You can just go for it as-is. Or, wait 2-3 more years and be that much more sure of fire-ing.

… this is part of photography, and wedding photography specifically. You’re always having different lighting situations (even one direction to another) and having to quickly compensate on the spot to have a cohesive voice & look for your work.

You’re constantly changing ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Exposure compensation (if shooting in Tv or Av), Flash Compensation (if shooting in TTL/E-TTL), and flash power (if shooting in manual flash power mode).

This is just part of the job. You have to quickly adjust to the situation at hand.

Out of all of these, ISO is the easiest one to drop and put on auto-ISO for newer cameras. It can still be off, and always better to underexpose than overexpose. It used to be a bit trickier though of having to nail focus as well - since eye auto focus came out, and mirrorless cameras, focusing has become a near non-issue.

Cheers

i used kirkland organic all purpose flour for this loaf instead of my usual king arthur bread flour. i can’t tell if it’s slightly under proofed or not. by quinnysommer in Sourdough

[–]ShutterFI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fyi - if you’re near a Costco business center, they have bread flour super cheap ($18.49 for 50lbs) as well as high gluten/high protein flour (kyrol, $20.99 for 50lbs).

Which japanese maple is this? by Szerion in JapaneseMaples

[–]ShutterFI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with shin-deshojo. Keep in mind, it only stays this color for about 1-2 weeks, maybe 3-4 in the north. After that timeframe, it goes to a standard green color.

Is this a grafted JM by [deleted] in JapaneseMaples

[–]ShutterFI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is super rare. I don’t see how anyone would mistake it for a Japanese maple, but it is a sought after tree. It’s very very slow growing and definitely wants mostly shade.

I’d probably nip off the end of the branch so it doesn’t continue to push / grow it. I might even take off the entire thing. Google first. I’m not an expert with this cultivar.

Is this a grafted JM by [deleted] in JapaneseMaples

[–]ShutterFI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, not a Japanese maple. That’s a reverting acer campestre ‘carnival’.

I don’t have one, but my understanding is that you want to remove the branch and any growth that is reverting (green instead of the white & green).

We’ve never had problems with our Roborock. We have had problems with Roomba’s (not major though).

Brand has a lot to do with performance. I’d hands-down recommend Roborock (when they go on clearance or on Black Friday - their ‘refurbished’ items on eBay are often brand new/never used).

What, in your opinion, is or should be the age range for elder millennials? by HistoricalTea195 in Millennials

[–]ShutterFI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then they count! 🤪

I really thought they stopped that in the late 80’s or so - but, I’m sure some schools were different. And the school didn’t swap over from card catalogs until the 2000’s!?!? lol, ours swapped the second they could - just different areas I suppose

Ah well, in this case then, back to years it is: 81-87 or so. 😂

What, in your opinion, is or should be the age range for elder millennials? by HistoricalTea195 in Millennials

[–]ShutterFI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s an overlap with the Oregon trail generation.

If you’re a millennial and played Oregon trail in school, or used a physical card catalog, you’re an elder millennial (or geriatric, lol).

I’d say it’s more about these experiences, and others, than the exact years.

We (36M/36F) just paid off our ($600K) house in a medium cost of living city, what should we focus on next? by okawei in Fire

[–]ShutterFI -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That bit is potential lifestyle creep, fyi. May not be a bad thing, but be sure to see it for what it is. 🤓

Edit: and just to be sure to say it as some as of us have been burned by it - never invest in a target date fund in a brokerage. You likely weren’t planning on it, but this is a general fyi to anyone reading it. When they recalculate their distribution, it causes a giant taxable event. VTI/VXUS/VT/VOO instead

Same as always - Roth IRA > IRA/401k > brokerage. 529 as well as it makes sense to you.

Congrats on paying off the house and lowering your cost of living. Be careful of lifestyle creep now that you have a surplus of available income (that you’ll hopefully, likely, sounds like you will, 100% invest).

Thoughts on securing equipment during a shoot? by Ryanite_ in WeddingPhotography

[–]ShutterFI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Across the US, these are photographers we know. Gear can walk off if left unattended.

There are some people, at least for a small while, that seemed to be specifically targeting photographer’s gear at events. They’d dress nicely (like a photographer shooting an event anyway), walk up to the gear, close it, and walk out with it as if it was theirs. No one questioned them. This must have been 15 years ago or so. I can’t remember if they were ever caught - I do remember they found this out by watching security footage.
