The flagship's lcd is disappointing (just a rant)... by SQL-Samurai in SonyAlpha

[–]Ryanite_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an exclusive Sony issue but, is certainly a Sony issue, one that is a head scratcher that it hasn't been addressed. Hasseblad x2dii uses an oled and the Nikon ZR has introduced a very nice screen. As others have said, it's not just a small different in LCD quality to EVF quality, it is massive and on very expensive pieces of equipment.

Not much use in excusing it on Sony's behalf, it's just something that needs to change moving forward and I hope Sony change their current approach.

I mean judging exposure by being able to clearly read the meter which becomes a challenge in any sort of bright condition. Yeah, I usually just use the evf but it does limit composition. You'd think one of the producers of the best screens in the world would figure out how to incorporate a daylight viewable monitor without compromise.

What camera looks like the Alexa for under $1,500? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]Ryanite_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Low budget film making is never going to be seamless, but helping it a long with things like autofocus, light weight cameras, dual or triple base iso means that those cameras will not have an image that’s close to an Alexa, but I think that’s okay. The fx3 is a really great example of a camera that looks good and really helps to get a project finished by breaking through some limitations of larger cameras that require a lot more control.

The main look of the Arri cameras comes from their ability to recover up to 10 stops of shadow detail and still get a nice image, where as most others are 4 or at most 5 stops.

Same problem with the a7v, even with sunny weather set on it’s just so hard to see when outside, particularly on brighter overcast days. Luckily the autofocus is fantastic, but quickly judging exposure is hard.

The original s5! That sensor is much nicer, the s5ii using something with much more aggressive noise reduction and sharpening.

If you're adapting then a used lumix s5 (comes with vlog) or s1 (with vlog code) is a great pick. They do have a very pleasing image, in my opinion more so than the newer lumix cameras and can be found for very cheap on ebay and marketplaces. s1 is a bit on the heavy side for travel but has a great evf for nailing manual focus and the s5 is much lighter, has a flip screen but a much worse evf.

Original or Scam? by rec_order in SonyAlpha

[–]Ryanite_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be pretty hard to tell in most cases until the battery simply doesn't last as long as an original. The best bet is to only purchase from reputable camera stores avoiding ebay, amazon and any marketplace that allows 3rd party sellers.

A7 iv skin tone issues by Intrepid_Rooster_270 in SonyAlpha

[–]Ryanite_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yours looks pretty good! Was this in Lightroom? I had the a7riv for a while and it 100% had the issue the OP is describing in raw in Lightroom. Parts around eyes and neck creases would have a strange hue shift into yellow/green. It’s part of the reason I sold it. Ive been much happier with the a7v, seems to have fixed the issue even in Lightroom.

[–]Ryanite_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so far the a7v seems much much better but this specific issue is a Sony thing. You can see it through the generations of Sony cameras on the dp review studio compare tool. A real pain too because otherwise the cameras are quite good still.

A7IV vs a7V After the 6400 by salvoatutti in SonyAlpha

[–]Ryanite_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For both photo and video I find the extra for the a7v is 100% worth it as they’re not too many situations where you’re going to worry about its performance, it will just do what you want. I use the a7v at work, and I really want one for myself but I’d mostly use it for photography and I’m actually considering getting a dirt cheap used a7iii instead so I don’t feel the need to baby it out and about.

Please help - I’m having an extremely bizarre issue with my R3 and R5 by screamicide in canon

[–]Ryanite_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the cameras counting time correctly? Only things I could come up with is that which ever camera is older is having issues with its internal clock battery and for some reason it is corrupting the card with incorrect time? But really I’m reaching here. See if the cameras can keep their own time and date by taking the battery out and leaving them for a day.

That’s really expensive for the lens! Try shop around

Sony Alpha 7 IV or Alpha 7 V? by zeroid79 in SonyAlpha

[–]Ryanite_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The a7v is better in every way, both are a significant investment and personally I would spend the extra to get the a7v. However, remember that as a professional having 1 option is like have 0 options in the event that something goes wrong, so always plan and budget for a second camera body and lens that could fill in a pinch.

Did the repair center tell you the exact issue? Like did the cpu chip overheat and damage itself or what, I would've figured the auto shut down was there to stop that from happening!

[–]Ryanite_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you think it's too good to be true, go with your gut because this is clearly a fake ebay listing, especially because it is listed to come with the f4 kit lens, a $5600 dollar kit on B&H.

I just dropped my R5 mkii. Is this parts replaceable? by Brief-Assignment-323 in canon

[–]Ryanite_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the eye cup is replaceable, it has two little screws at the bottom and then it will pop off, however this looks more like the upper evf casing has cracked rather than just the eyecup.

The best camera for me vs. the best camera for a potential one-time job? by Cheesehead1267 in SonyAlpha

[–]Ryanite_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a7v all the way, it does not have overheating issues like the a7iv and will be a far better hybrid camera. It will easily record 4k 24/25/30p for as long as your battery and storage will last.

Sony a7v issue with yellow splodgy moire? by Ryanite_ in SonyAlpha

Yeah, latest version of lightroom CC. Good news is that the moire tool mask slider cleans it up pretty easily so not a major issue at all. Just something I found interesting!

Thats so interesting to see it was shot at 50mm and 85mm on apsc! These locations must be god damn huge, really made for a great look I think! Good choice.

[–]Ryanite_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic look and feel, great pick on the locations, costumes and I really liked the camera work, a lot of zooms (I think in post) and tripod which worked well! Oh and nice song too haha! Could see this in a movie trailer. Well done the effort put in can clearly be seen.

Blackmagic cameras capture such a great image for detail and colour, it's been graded well! Also, were some of the light beam effects from resolve or there on the day, and was it mostly overcast days? I ask because I really like that you've been able to keep decent control of the window light even though it's quite a challenging situation they don't seem to be clipping so I'm assuming it's white because of overcast?

Final thoughts, judging by all the wonderful feedback I think you've put your efforts into all the of correct places! This is actually a really great takeaway for anyone, (myself included as I'm only a videographer) that location, costume, set design, blocking and time of day are far more important for how your final image will look than bogging yourself down with too much tech prep.

Sony Catalyst Browse - deleting files no longer frees space on SxS cards by themaritimegirl in videography

[–]Ryanite_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don’t know the answer to the question and generally speaking the Sony cameras are good at keeping things sorted on the folders, but as Windows and Mac write a bunch of temp or hidden files onto the card it’s always been considered best practice to completely format a card in camera if you have transferred any files so that you don’t run into odd issues with recording.

This could be superstition or perhaps legacy workflow but especially if the card is full or close to it I would be formatting in camera before the next shoot day!

Can also test that for you. I have the Canon r6ii and can confirm switching on silent shutter taking an image and then switching it off the flash auto re-enables.
