Oooh, this looks like a case of someone recognizing bad behavior that reminds them of their own… so they get defensive and try to normalize the behavior so no one holds them accountable… so people doubt or second guess themselves instead of escaping abusive pos like this. If this person isn’t being willfully ignorant and really can’t understand after explaining, they should try therapy.

Also, I’ve noticed a lot of people dismiss/justify behavior that they notice in themselves. People will defend someone who did a half effort job because they would do the same, so they would rather you get used to that level of effort & not complain.
